i've noticed less traffic in RTP so far this week, but this is also the time of year when people start taking vacations so maybe it's a coincidence

When i was at state, the norovirus swept through campus.

we did everything we could to not catch it, but all of us still threw up while diarrhea-ing

unless EVERYONE stays home for 2 weeks, it will continue to spread. and it will, because no one will do that.

but luckily, for people who arent in the big three (old, young, immune-compromised) it's just another flu (as far as what you go through).

i'm really interested in what the anti vax community is saying about it. for the laughs i mean.

^^ same here.

They hit 1000 cases in the US, and it's definitely growing exponentially... actually accelerating. Probably will continue to accelerate until they get the broader testing in place.

China saw an asymptote in cases at about 80,000, and the current rate we'll be at about 16,000 cases at the end of next week

I know some people don't like Rogan, this is a good conversation about COVID with a CDC expert:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3URhJx0NSw

He makes it sound like the US is going to be more problematic than China/Italy because they noticed that people who smoked had worse issues with COVID and it was bad particularly in China with old men because most smoked. He then said that obesity is also known to be an issue with COVID so the US is going to have a lot of issues with it, and that the speculation of "it just effects old people" is wrong and that it's closer to 40+ than 70+.

Ugh. My daughter is in a charter school in Wake co, and my son is in a daycare. I'm not worried about them, but dang, I'm certain they're going to bring it home to us.

^^^ the smoker rate in the US is probably lower than Italy or China. Americans don't really smoke compared to the rest of the world.

smoking is still common with low-income and uninsured americans

(and we don't have a lot of data yet with vaping, that might be bad for you too)

You're right, smoker rate is certainly lower.

But they've proven that diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity have all caused more issues with people who catch COVID. The US has MUCH higher rates than most countries when it comes to those 3 things.

Good site to track the numbers for yourself

Italy’s death rate was approximately what ours is now in the early stages, then in about 4-6 days we should expect the death rate to ramp up to the whole number percentages

So far this is a textbook mathematical exponential growth rate

Don’t listen to anyone telling you this is no big deal

Me and my family are all planning on major interruptions within 2 weeks. I hope thats not what we see, but thats the target Im using for planning.

Im also trying to decide what to do professionally, i have an offer for another job that normally would be a great opportunity but its a position that is a lot more at risk if we have a major impact vs where i am now.

Italy added 2313 c, 196 d in one day!

US: 1301 c, 38 d

BTW, thankfully I am in a 'country' which took it seriously from early Feb — schools closed, social distancing, and working from home since Feb 3; "once bitten, twice shy" being the reason for the country's early response — and so I took it seriously as well, as can be seen from my posts ITT from pages 1 and 2. Now people are posting some of the things I was posting from the start of the thread.

(One of the turquoise countries from the graph moron posted)

Listen to your federal health experts, America:

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/11/top-federal-health-official-says-coronavirus-outbreak-is-going-to-get-worse-in-the-us.html

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/11/up-to-150-million-americans-are-expected-to-contract-the-coronavirus-congressional-doctor-says.html

Unfortunately, capitalism is far too important. Having said that, it is heartening to see many schools and universities closing, and companies making people work from home. US is also considering banning travel to (and from?) Europe.

East Asia having been burned by SARS in the recent past has learned some lessons and knows how to respond. Europe and US haven't had any novel epidemics (other than flus) in the recent past, which is good, but that unfortunately also means they don't know how to respond to one now.

Western Europe and parts of the US need to shut down, now!

We've been needing to thin the herd. Part of me looks forward to seeing 5% of old folks bite the dust. Mostly Trump voters and they're too taxing on our healthcare system. Flush em out at once.
