as a black person who has been gainfully employed for the entirety of my adulthood as well as the majority of my teenage years.......you're stupid. that was not funny. don't quit your day job. how it really is:

wait, so institutionalized racism isnt a thing now?[Edited on February 28, 2017 at 1:33 PM. Reason : its kinda funny]

its funny like pepe jokes and carrying milk jugs is funny
2/28/2017 1:36:34 PM
Idc if anyone thinks the joke is bad, but there's nothing to be offended by.

ah, the Milo response

the fucking gall to stand up for your shitty attempt at humor and blame humor being dead in America....

anyone who watches snl in 2017 and enjoys it is part of the problem

what problem?
2/28/2017 2:15:59 PM
humor being deadthere's plenty of great comedy, but if you're in the mainstream these days, you pick the low hanging fruit and avoid topics that can be misinterpreted as "offensive". otherwise, you risk becoming a pariah, losing your job, etc. See: Nick Cannon, pewdiepie
2/28/2017 2:27:27 PM
haha. you're so hilariously wrong. what did Nick Cannon do?and why did you feel the need to bring up SNL? their absurdly successful formula has been the same for 40+ years[Edited on February 28, 2017 at 2:36 PM. Reason : .]
2/28/2017 2:34:21 PM
If I'm wrong, then so are a lot of top comedians who have commented on the same thing.Nick Cannon made a joke about NBC taking away his black card, and it's being painted as "off color"

the top comedians who are making more money while on tour now than ever before?

lotta great comedy minds over at the New Yorker (and I'm a fan of the New Yorker)

Hes talks about the experiences of other comics. It's a good read and takes on more than one perspective.

http://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/adultswim-ruining-comedythe liberals aren't to blame for you not being funny. you just aren't. no one said they were offended, no one said SNL made them think you weren't funny (who the fuck still watches SNL???), and if there's anything to blame for humor being dead in America, it's the shitty joke that you're attempting to pass off as humor. you're lowering the bar for what's considered funny and it's just sad at this point.[Edited on February 28, 2017 at 3:11 PM. damn dude, you got me. ill leave this thread and turn hannity back on

Good lord, he already admitted it was a bad joke. Why are people losing it?And there is some truth that the PC culture has made it far more risky for comedians to really push the limits. But that's the nature of the always-on, highly connected world we are in now.
2/28/2017 3:23:14 PM
its not that this is a subject that's off limits to humor, its just that your joke was shitty and racist. humor can be racist and not funny, not all humor about race is racist, if something is offensive or not has a lot to do who is saying it, how clever it is, etc... you can't seem to understand any of these nuances, but good comedians are able to walk that line.there are times when people over react to humor, or decide that someone had ill intentions for a mistake or misunderstanding. i don't think that you meant to make a racist joke, but its an issue that you can't recognize that your joke was racist and instead of just being like "oh shit, that came out wrong, my bad" you went with the Milo response of "its true, nothing to be offended about, sorry you are offended"tl;dryour joke was basically "haha, she's poor, now she's like the blacks" and you don't seem to have the cleverness or nuance required to effectively make a joke about a sensitive subject without it being offensive
2/28/2017 3:28:17 PM
Or maybe it wasn't at all racist and you lack the nuance to understand the irony behind it?
2/28/2017 3:38:15 PM
nah, it was racistthe addition of "real" is maybe what tipped the scale [Edited on February 28, 2017 at 3:39 PM. Reason : .]

I'm mostly with adultswim on this one, as I basically had the same reaction. In reality, she grew up a relatively privileged white chick and went out of her way to co-opt and appropriate 'blackness' for her own gain, and she did so by lying to everyone about her past and insinuating that she'd personally had to deal with the trials and tribulations of being born black in America. Now, she'll get to see what it's really like having to deal with oppression, and it's 100% her own damn fault. His wording was awkward and tone deaf, but the point still stands. and i'll give you hint: if you refer to a racial group by disparaging them as a singular poor as fuck monolith you're being racist.[Edited on February 28, 2017 at 8:52 PM. Reason : you can try and make excuses about the delivery but it doesn't lessen the reality of that "joke," nor did his cop out attempt saying "humor is dead"]]
His biggest mistake was using the "I'm just kidding!" or "It's a joke, quit being so sensitive!" defense. It is somewhat ironic that a white woman pretending to be black now has to face hardships that many poor black people have to endure- especially when you consider the fact that she grew up somewhat privileged. But the way he said it was bad and his defensive attitude didn't do him any favors. Let this be a lesson we can all learn from. In the world of online arguments, it's important to remember that people are always out to make you look stupid. Cheer up, adultswim!
