id still want them outbut thats a separate issue we dont need to create a magnet drawing them to public areas like parks. it can create an epidemic
8/26/2013 9:25:12 PM
haha so the problem is serving food in the park, not all the homeless people in your neighborhoodLOL
8/26/2013 9:28:21 PM
wooshyou swung and missed the point againkeep trying
8/26/2013 9:30:11 PM

what about picnics where homeless people aren't allowed?
8/26/2013 9:36:41 PM
artificially high amount of homeless on left, normal amount of homeless in a bad economy in an urban environment on right. right is okay, left is not. its not an issue of kicking homeless out of Raleigh, its about not attracting all of them to this one park that other people would like to use. duh
8/26/2013 9:38:50 PM
seems like a legit graph
8/26/2013 9:40:37 PM
seriously, i'm down for a nice picnic in a park, but i don't want any homeless milling around and begging for food at the table like stray dogs.

8/26/2013 9:51:24 PM
what is with your correlation of black people to homelessness?
8/26/2013 9:55:08 PM
homeless= black personlow-income neighborhood= black peoplethis isn't TWW rocket science...
8/26/2013 9:56:45 PM
I'm not the one doing the correlating. This is what "homeless" means in this thread.
8/26/2013 10:03:42 PM
Homeless (for me) in a rural enviroment is waaay better. Less human threats. The homeless I know- 75% are abusers of the system. The rest are actually down on their luck and trying to do better. I've been there. Trying to get my shit back together and not having anywhere to turn. It sucks. BigHitSundaymost of the bums I've encountered are like you describe, its the ones you don't see, folks working, but living in cars, the ones who keep out of sight who really need help. I get pretty pissed off when someone is hittin me up for change or is trying to flip their EBT card, etc. Those make it alot worse for people who actually need help. (Hope you're doing good, Chris!)

Seriously if you work downtown you will understand. I tend to sympathize with homeless and would take people out for food weekly. But when you work downtown ESPECIALLY if you rock a tie... Holy fuck they act like you carry a grand around in your pocket and owe them a piece. If you go between buildings a lot... Like from an engineering firm to an architecture firm they ask you for money so many times you'd yell at them if they were your own children. And as had been said most of them feed you a bs story and are so drunk/ high they don't even remember feeding you a different line of bs the day before. When I had time I used to have a litmus test, if you asked them to help you with something and they did... Fuck yeah I'd give them money but if they get pissy if you ask them for directions or something like that, and they get pissy, you are cutting into their scam time.I dunno I have mixed feelings. If it were just one or two I'd be ok, but getting asked 5 times every time you walk down Fayetteville st. gets me all .

Hi colter - glad to see you're doing well and thanks for sharing your personal experience This is interesting: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g49463-d277306-r156287542-Moore_Square-Raleigh_North_Carolina.html - lots of reviews of Moore Square from the past few years about the homeless deterring visitors

you're being awfully condescending in this thread.

that's because of the high level of dumb

when you're trying to explain your position, it helps if you're not a total douche

explaining my position, and convincing anyone to agree with it, is not my goal[Edited on August 27, 2013 at 10:58 AM. Reason : mostly because begonias already ended the thread]

Is there any place that homeless people can legally sleep? If not, what should they do? Die?
8/27/2013 11:29:59 AM
researchedher points standyour turn
8/27/2013 11:34:21 AM
k1. several people already pointed out how stupid this is2. shelters are not food kitchens, and they often have eligibility requirements (women/children only) and waitlists. none in the vicinity of moore's square serve food on weekends.3. giving to rehabilitation centers is important, but so is providing immediate resources4. SNAP benefits are often used for optional payments to food kitchens because homeless people can't cook their own food, nor do they have refrigerators. $200/mo is not enough for someone who is forced to eat out all the time5. it's hard to help people who don't want to be helped. i agree6. handouts don't solve the problem, but are necessary in the short term
8/27/2013 11:58:46 AM
When people speak of "scamers" do they have in mind people who have a home and are trying to make money?Because that's kind of important. It's also kind of important the Jesus biscuits and panhandling are not the same thing. I don't think anyone has argued against enforcing panhandling laws. Perhaps the most perplexing about these positions - if the people getting the biscuits have a home and do not look disheveled, then what's the problem?
8/27/2013 12:00:54 PM
8/27/2013 12:16:22 PM
its also worth noting that people have been complaining about this for years, way before any of this new money that may be involved

STOP SPILLING MY BEANS

My opinion (not that it matters) is that the city doesn't need to provide anywhere for these folks to feed the homeless especially in a publicly funded park where people (who fund it) avoid because if the homeless population. I've worked downtown since 2007 and most of the "homeless" down here are only looking to get high/drunk. I am currently standing in the heart of downtown and I just asked Siri where the nearest churches were and there are 15 of them. This week would be great publicity for them to offer their parking lots/buildings. Also, if the "homeless" would take better care of the park it may not even be an issue.
