Holy shit! Corvette Z06 MSRP is $78,995

Why the F would anyone bother with the Camaro Z/28 for $75k?!

har har. I understand that some people want that back seat. Still, seems hard to justify the price of the Z/28 if Chevy can sell the semi-exotic Z06 for close to the same amount.

^ Considering it will out-perform the previous ZR1, I would call it a full-blown exotic.

Interesting breakdown of the suspension setup.

^^It's had that suspension design for a while now. Composite leaf spring front and rear.

This C7 crashed going 100+, and the driver walked away.

^^^^ Corvettes have had transverse leaf springs both front and rear for generations...like all the way back to the C2, I think, although the specifics have changed, particularly starting with the C5. It's actually a very good design with some real advantages.

I knew the rear suspension was monoleaf on recent models, but never paid attention to the fronts.

C5 had the biggest suspension update compared to previous generation in part because they switched to a rear transaxle with the C5's.

meh. it'll be fine. You realize that engine factories do audits and put a certain number of brand new engines on a dyno to go to peak power with less than an hour of run time on it?

i mean it abused the tires and heated up the fluids. but the car is stock, the torque limiting controls should keep anything major from happening to it.

"After several laps on the track or a few hard acceleration runs on the highway, owners of the brandy new Super Vette are reporting noticeable power loss from the supercharged LT4 V8. Originally it was thought that it was heat soak from the supercharger, but, it is, in fact, conservative tuning of the ECU to help the drivetrain survive for 100,000 miles as well as allow the Z06 to meet stringent US emissions regs"

I'd be pissed. Drop 80k+ on a car, and you have to void your warranty for it to perform correctly.

Z06 is a track package, and they crippled it at the track....wtf GM

There solution to the problem is laughable. You can go enjoy your car the way it is designed after you get a aftermarket tune to get rid of our self crippling tune. BTW that will void your warranty.

They have a point, what 65 year old is going to really use all 650hp.

True, but I thought the only real regulatory huddles for automakers in the US are CAFE standards, which in simple terms are fleet average fuel economy requirements which are intertwined with CO2 emissions. High performing engines aren't exactly going to be pumping out unburnt fuel and NOx.

Wouldn't the tiny handful of Z06s be negligible compared to the zillions of econo things sold? GM could build every Z06 to inject gasoline straight into the exhaust pipe and it still wouldn't dent their overall fuel economy averages.

This is classic GM. These Z06 owners need to start worrying about reliability. I don't buy the emissions excuse since the companies argument is you can void the warranty and get all the power all the time. I think they probably found something in testing that says it won't last 100k+ miles at 650hp.

This is GM, the company that knowingly allowed people to drive cars with bad ignition switches etc.

I've been all over the Hellcat forum and not one owner is complaining about them slowing down.

hard to get to the root of this because so many people are just copying something they read somewhere on a forum. I think this is the original article:

http://www.autoevolution.com/news/2015-corvette-z06-owners-report-heat-soak-power-loss-its-actually-a-conservative-ecu-setup-89790.html

There's some silly stuff in there.

Quote :
" “With the OE calibration we did experience the same thing... The timing tables are EXTREMELY conservative and the ECU will pull timing for almost any situation. I am waiting for owners to complain about "tip in" as the ECU pulls a massive amount of timing when slightly touching the gas pedal”"

it's called tip-in bump control and fast path torque reduction bro, basic stuff.

It sure sounds like intercooler heatsoak to me, as the root cause. The hotter the air charge gets, the more spark has to be pulled and the hotter the exhaust temperatures would get. Hot exhaust temperatures age the cat prematurely. The thermal model enriches according to predicted cat brick temp. As heatsoak increases, timing is retarded according to the torque model. However, you can't retard too much or the combustion gets too unstable and could misfire (destroying the cat), so you go into de-rating.

As far as the emissions thing goes, it's simple. In 1 year and in 4 years the engine will have to go in for in-use emissions testing. They have to take customer cars back in and test them on a chassis dyno and make sure that they aren't failing emissions. If the cat overheats, you get into a situation where the car could fail a government emissions test but the driver would never see a check engine light.

The full quote was:

"We are confident that the vast majority of customers are going to be more than satisfied with the performance the Z06 offers in stock form. For those that want more power, they can visit an aftermarket tuner – who are not held to the same standards [emissions and warranty] as an OEM. However, this presents significant risk to the customer. An aftermarket tune voids the vehicle warranty as Chevrolet cannot possibly test or confirm the durability of their calibration; and aftermarket calibrations could cause drivability issues that are not present in the factory setting."

They're not telling people to void the warranty. They're acknowledging that some people will do that, but they can't guarantee the tune will be safe in the long term--which is exactly what you would expect them to say.

You gotta remember that these engines go through hours and hours of durability tests at peak power in labs. The difference is, in a lab you can hold the air charge temperature mostly constant using a lab heat exchanger. Heatsoak isn't a problem like in a car.

Yes, and thus every time a large automaker states that they couldn't do _____ for their low volume performance car because of emissions I usually wave the BS flag.

Quote :
"“This car was built to look good in a brochure, Clarkson wrote. “The numbers and ingredients are tantalising, but this car is not a serious player in the European theatre of war. It may be able to out-accelerate just about everything, and on a skid pan the size of Texas, where there’s nothing to hit if you overstep the mark, it can generate some extraordinary lateral G. But it’s not nice to drive.

“So if you want a serious car, buy one from the continent that gave the world Shakespeare, Monet and Emerson Lake & Palmer. Europe does serious well. It does substance. It does brilliant. America does Disney. And what we have with the Z06 is Disney trying to do a hard-hitting documentary about Africa’s civil wars. Naturally, it hasn’t really worked.”"
