LOL, this was a back-in-the-day observation for me...I haven't been on Facebook in years.

And I know it's actually hard to find a "nice" place these days without the silly granite. I only mentioned it because my friend is presently struggling to find a place without granite--she hates it, doesn't want it, thinks it's bullshit...but every decent place is adorned with that garbage now...so yeah...her search reminded me of all those pitifully obvious pics back in the day...

She taught in NJ, not in NC which is 51st in the US for teacher pay.

I am sure more than a few mid 30 somethings on tww have 50k liquid or easily liquidateable assets. But who here has spent $50k in cold hard cash in a year, not talking about living expenses or house? I have (actually $90k)

I think that's because granite has dropped drastically in price. It's so little extra money now that it's kinda silly not to do it.

If a granite kitchen was still $15k+, I'd be like "Yeah, whatever. Formica's cool. Plywood. Fuck it, whatever. It'll be alright."

When it's $3k, though...that's a different calculus. I walked away from a bunch of houses that didn't have granite (or quartz or anything besides formica) last time I bought a house, because I wasn't going to spend money to upgrade it when you can find houses with it so easily now, and when it's pretty much the expectation on a decent house nowadays.

I mean, if the whole house needed updating and I got it for a good deal, then great. I'd either spend a little and add it, or I'd just enjoy my little mortgage payment...I mean that all things being equal or close to it, I wasn't going to go without the granite.

Yes, it's a big problem with politics.

Also true, most people aren't educated, responsible, and/or lucky, so of 35 year olds, it would be a little unusual to find one with $50k stashed away.

A person with a teachers salary, on average, will have a net worth (including house value) of about $30k at 35.

Someone told me the other day that granite needs a special cleaner or it will start absorbing stains and stuff... Doesn't seem very practical for a kitchen counter surface to me.

First off, moron's super dated ignorance of granite's flaws just brought him up like X1000 in sexiness.

Second off, BobbyDigital, we don't talk. I realize that nobody posts anymore. But I ain't actually talking about countertops, and again, you and I still don't talk. Feel free to repeat that refrain to me whenever I'm bored enough to acknowledge you exist. (Like right now or something.)

That was page 6, but you've made it clear elsewhere so you're good.

If we're counting cars, then even I could come up with it. But I didn't exactly work for it so whatever.

And y'all know I only got $1 in my savings account right now.

Also, we can't count cosmetic surgery debt.

I actually really dislike my granite countertops. You can never tell when they're actually clean, they always feel gritty, and they stain. Gross.

I came here to post exactly this:

"silestone quartz > granite"

I've never had these problems with my granite. Well...there is a slight water stain where I keep my soap dispenser...but that's my fault for allowing water to remain there on a daily basis for the past five years.

^ Yeah really, mine are clean and shining pretty hard right now. I wonder does he actually know how to clean granite? If you have 2 brains cells and a pulse you can clean it right. Also, I dislike silestone simply because it looks too commercial (pattern is exact same through the slab) and does not have a natural look that granite has when many wisps and swirls and whatnots.

Yeah that's what I'm talking about. And the granite in my bathroom at my parents' house does this almost instantly upon having water sit on it. It's a lighter color, not sure if that effects this.

I don't mean like sandpaper, but I'm having a hard time describing what I mean.

Quote :

First of all, I'm not a HE, and second, yes I know how to clean granite. My point is that there could be tiny crumbs or spatters all over it and you'd never really know unless you ran your hand across it. This is obviously just a personal gripe of mine, but it's something I don't like about granite.

If I bought a new house I'd do silestone or poured concrete - personalized

^ If they sealed it it would not soak up water. It would be impossible in fact if they sealed it every 6-12 months. Tell them stop being lazy or pay a maid service to seal it up.

Wow. I came in here to see what the latest sex scandal was. I learned that for 32 I'm not doing so bad. Thanks, TWW. And before I get called an overfortunate out of touch douche. I'll go ahead and put out there that I made all my money the old fashioned way at work. Also my childhood household was a trailer in which the couch my parents rolled out to sleep on blocked off the front door because it spanned the whole living room. So yea. Its doable. I wont post my financials but 50k in a pinch should not be that hard and to those who say it is: 1 learn to save more or 2 I am sorry that your previous financial situation and all of your other complaints against society have not allowed for that due to life's unfairness. I know that the reasons exist but I'm with Duke here.

(oh and yes I'm an insufferable lurker so please don't mind this post)

What's about that? There's a Teacher Loan Forgiveness program in NC, there's also a federal loan repayment program you can apply for. And quite a few undergrads have their degrees paid for in part by promising to work for a specific school district upon graduation. Not to mention the public service loan forgiveness.
