I have neoprene waders I bring out if i'm feeling like a weenie (got them for surf fishing at the OBX in December, but they work fine in freshwater too)

A little bit random but my cousin sent this to me and I thought I would share.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TJntzEPAn4

I'm a novice angler, but this year I've been down at the coast trying to hook some flounder, the neuse river for some top water bass, near harker's island for some puppy drum, and the "lake" behind my apartment for anything that'll bite.I've got a trip planned for the first of October for a big crappie fish on one of the lakes in Santee Cooper in SC, does anybody have any experience with that?
9/15/2010 8:49:21 PM
seems like a long way to ride to catch some crappie. they'd practically jump in the boat out on lake raleigh
9/15/2010 8:52:05 PM
Yeah, that was my initial thought too, but dad is all excited about it. Now that me and my brother are all moved out and "grown up" he wants to have some kind of a trip.
9/15/2010 8:53:22 PM
why not get a guided drum trip in NC? that'd be very useful for a novice imo.
9/15/2010 8:57:01 PM
drum as in puppy drum? I agree, the one time I've fished for them it was spectacular. But again, dad has all this planned out and I don't want to rain on his parade. I'm sure he refuses to acknowledge me as a "novice angler", too, because he's always fished and I tagged along for a while, but I didn't get out of the bait the hook and toss it in the water phase until recently. I've got a friend who lives in new bern though, so I've got plenty of weekends for any other kind of fishing.

yeah, they have a lot of namesfor the crappie, get you some of those 15' rods and hang about a dozen of them off the front of the boat like a big fucking spider trolling/drifting along. that's what those dudes in the tournaments do.
9/15/2010 9:05:19 PM
As much as I hate to admit this, its a guided crappie fish . Reds and red drum are names for them too, right? Again, novice here. But yeah, when we fished them down at harker's island it was amazing. When the tides changed, a whole sound/bay on one side of the island filtered through one channel, and the puppy drum would just sit out there and feed on everything that got bottlenecked through there. Throw in a line, pull out a fish. Repeat. It was great.

red=redfish=red drum=puppy drum=spot tail=channel bass"puppy drum" is usually used to refer to the smaller ones (slot size and smaller)"red drum" or simply "drum" are usually used to refer to the huge ones"redfish" and "red" are used further south (GA, FL, the gulf, etc.)

It was too windy down at Santee Cooper yesterday morning to crappie fish, so we fished for some cats instead. Ended up with 9 total, then crappie fished in the afternoon and got 20. It was a blast; totally worth it.45 pounder

Why the hell would you want to catch a bowfin? We catch them all the time on the Meherrin river in Murfreesboro, most people just shoot them when they get it to the boat

I dont agree with killing them of course but it does piss me off when I hook one, they usually ruin whatever lure I am using. My dad is just the opposite, he loves hooking one mainly for the fight.
