Holy crap I just got a call back from an employer I thought I wouldn't hear from since I rejected their first offer (I wasn't ready to work full time immediately after my internship ended, as I needed a break due to some issues ). Apparently they've spent a month since we last spoke trying to find somebody else and came back to tell me they checked over my credentials, felt that they needed to make a better offer (no specific numbers), and said I was the only candidate they had talked to that they felt was right for the position. It's not even in my field or my specialization while I was at state.I've got time to call back about this offer and to accept it, so this gives me time to hear back about a job with the navy that I also think I have a very very high percentage chance of getting (I should hear back about that job sometime this week or the next). I really want to wait a week or two to hear back about this job because it's in my field and it's something I wanted to do but couldn't (because of the diabetes). I can work for the military in a civilian job doing stuff that supports our country's national defense, and that would be, to me, totally fucking awesome. I may be one of maybe a dozen people in this state fortunate enough to have two possible offers to consider while the economy comes crashing down around everyone's ears.I'd also like to say that FykalJpn is awesome for sending me PM's about job openings he's seen for CE's on the interwebs. And @ BridgetSPK: Yep, things are really really bad right now. If you want to see how bad, find a posting for a company that's having a "job fair" and accepting applications on a certain day. Head down and see who is showing up, how they're dressed, what they've brought with them, and the looks on their faces. See how many people are there. There were probably twenty to thirty people who cycled in and out in the thirty minutes I was at the Aldi on Maynard Rd in Cary applying for a cashier job. Most of them looked like they were really hurting and at their wit's end trying to find employment. I have heard back from none of the low-paying part time jobs I've applied to and I have good experience as a cashier working retail and doing customer service. I don't think hundreds of applications per open position for "low-paying entry-level" jobs would be an unrealistic estimate. A lot of people are really really desperate right now.Times are very strange right now for me and everyone else. Whenever I get employed I'm going to do my best to come back here and help other people out as you all have helped me out. Who knows, maybe through our connections we can keep each other afloat, yes?[Edited on March 9, 2009 at 11:57 AM. Reason : ]

gg yo hope you get it
3/9/2009 11:56:35 AM
Thanks. It would be a much needed break for me and for my family. Much of what we've had lately is just bad news followed by more bad news. When it rains it pours!
3/9/2009 12:06:51 PM
Good luck.I have a 3rd round interview with a Director at the company I'm applying to in about an hour.
3/9/2009 2:58:19 PM
i found some part time retail work... starting at 7 bucks an hour. but my income has been zero for the last 2 months so i'm taking it.
3/9/2009 7:59:12 PM
^^^ awesome man, good to hear! hopefully it works out. Is all this work in the triangle area?
3/9/2009 9:56:02 PM
Job Fair today at the McKimmon Center at 9amhttp://www.wral.com/news/local/story/4710887/
3/11/2009 7:58:29 AM
^^ One job is in the triangle area, but it'll land me at some corporate apartment in Myrtle Beach (NOT where I want to go) for two months and the pay is pretty low. That's kind of why they called back, though. They wanted to increase the offer because either A: Nobody else would accept the offer they made so they decided to go through candidates again with a higher base level of pay or B: Everybody else they interviewed lacked skills/experience/knowledge that I have and they didn't want to risk it.The other job is with the US Navy in Portsmouth, VA, but relocation is covered, there's a signing bonus, pay is excellent, work is in line with what I've always wanted to do, and there are benefits out the ass. Thus, I'm waiting to hear back from the Navy first.
3/11/2009 10:15:58 AM
^^I already posted I just got back from it. Joblink is making folks wait outside, because of crowding. I don't know where the parking staff are telling people to park; I knew where I could get a spot for sure As usual, it's more of the 'yeah, I'll take your resume, but you need to apply online' business; there's one company I want to work for that was very, very interested (as best I co uld tell ). I also got a lead on a position I have a good chance at, having worked there 5 years ago and left in good standing, with 7a-4p hours...in the food industry :-\Here is a list of companies participating. There were a good many booths there that weren't hiring - some even bordered on advertising.^I really, really, really hope you get the navy job [Edited on March 11, 2009 at 11:28 AM. Reason : df]Update: I can't take that second job. It's at Cafe Carolina on Fayetteville St Mall in the Wachovia building. Hours would be, IIRC, ~630 - ~430 (restaurant hours at 7a-4p). As I recall, Boddie-Noell offers pretty decent benefits, but I never paid attention to that part of the handbook because I was part-time. I wouldn't worry about parking - they help with that. The store number there is 7252. The Cameron Village location will also pull your application if they're looking to hire. When I got that job, I had actually applied to Cameron Village, but the Wachovia location called me.bnecareers.com[Edited on March 11, 2009 at 11:47 AM. Reason : sd]

NC's unemployment jumped 1.6% in January and is now at 9.7% We tied for the biggest one month and the biggest one year jump and we're now 6th in the country for unemployment, behind Michigan, South Carolina, Rhode Island, California, and Oregon.http://www.bls.gov/news.release/laus.nr0.htm

I've been looking for full time employment since August of last year. All I seem to find are contract positions. But at least it's a job.
3/12/2009 10:44:47 AM
damn, didn't know it was this bad for some people. We just hired 7 people.
3/12/2009 10:49:32 AM
Just got a call this morning that the company I was supposed to start for on MONDAY just went on a hiring freeze and canceled all contracts starting this month. So now I have 2 weeks to find a job.fucking christ.
3/12/2009 11:19:40 AM
^^it's not that bad. People just are not willing to work in jobs that below their old pay-grade. What happened to the saying "when the going gets tough, the tough gets going"?
3/12/2009 11:33:15 AM
keep telling yourself its not that bad.
3/13/2009 8:07:40 PM
^^ it is that bad. the first time i got laid off (in november) i couldn't get a fucking job at target, barnes and noble, or anywhere else for that matter. some people are willing to work below their pay grade; i've been doing construction for three days (with a BSME degree) for $10/hr.get out with that b.s.
3/13/2009 9:10:07 PM
Its pretty bad, I work in the Construction Industry and my current project will be done at the end of April, I have no idea whats going to happen after that. My company has alot of projects getting delayed/cancelled. Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.
3/13/2009 9:14:31 PM
^i got laid off for the second time because all of my company's work got canceled. i hope for the best for you. job hunting right now is not fun.

Yeah Commercial side of my company is DEAD slow, Industrial side is still going but starting to slow down some. Earlier this year they revised our CTO expectations that were planned last year, which resulted in two rounds of layoffs. We were told that we shouldnt expect anymore layoffs. BUT earlier this week we found out our biggest project in company history which we just started a few months ago is getting shut down and pushed back until further notice. So i am pretty sure more layoffs are to come.Def wish everyone good luck in there job searches!
3/13/2009 9:31:52 PM
no job since dec 2

^ ECONOMY FOR THE FUCKING LOSE!I'm keeping an eye on which states have tolerable unemployment rates at a time like this. The northeast doesn't look half bad at all. Would just have to dig my ass out of the snow every day in the winter, lol.Haven't been able to hear back from the navy yet and I sent out an email to my contact there (last contacted him ~2 weeks ago). With one job on the burner that I could lose if they find another suitable candidate (they only just started this week though), I am really needing to get some word back on a "hear by" date for this job. I'm sure it'll be this week or, at the latest, next week (given how they hire there is a schedule that would really require them to have the offers out before april hits, given the usual start dates in late may or early june). I know he's reading my emails, and the reply would literally take thirty seconds. I just don't want to be forced to take a job that I might really really hate after having dealt with some depression as a result of doing other shit that I really really hated.[Edited on March 14, 2009 at 6:09 AM. No job yet, but staying active and trying to network.Had a 3rd round interview with a Director of a company on Monday.Had an in-office interview with another company on Friday (4 total interviews while I was there).I'm optimistic but not confident. Sort of looking forward to getting a little bit of unemployment, give me back some of that money I've donated to the government the past four years.

I went from $55,000 last year to making $8 an hour now. Maybe when I finish my MBA they will bump me up to $9.
3/14/2009 4:10:42 PM
I'm lucky to have something on the table. I'm contacting that employer right now since I FINALLY got in touch with somebody at the Navy and found out that they just got slapped with new budget constraints so they can't expand their operations at the shipyard right now. This other employer was willing to revise their previous offer though since they couldn't find anybody better, so maybe I can get them to provide me health coverage sooner... I saw a 5% increase in my prescription expenses over the course of a month and god knows I'd like to have my employer cover my premiums as soon as possible.I'll update with any good news I get from them. Or bad news... D:^^ Yes, this is how it looks right now... I'm lucky that I applied to a small company that didn't advertise the position they had super heavily. I do not know if this job will last all that long though. This one contract they're hiring on for right now may not have anything to follow it.[Edited on March 17, 2009 at 1:29 PM. Reason : --]

was able to get an interviewed scheduled with a company I was going to interview with but canceled because I was offered that other job. Hopefully that one will work out.

Keep networking and don't be afraid to stick your neck out there for new opportunities that are outside your comfort zone. A lot of people I know have dropped from a middle class living to the poverty line in the blink of an eye. I'm very grateful to have a job right now, and my only advice is to be as persistent as possible and to give every opportunity a shot. I hated my first job out of college with a passion, but the experience I gained from it landed me my current job. Good luck.
3/17/2009 1:42:24 PM
question for you folks. how much money can i earn while on unemployment?
