i had a feeling the hdd was the way to goi use mac the ripper software, any input on the switching the hdd back and forth between a mac and pc? i dont feel like it should be a problem but i only know enough about electronics to be dangerous
6/16/2009 2:18:43 PM
Shouldn't be a problem except for file sizes like what was already mentioned. Rip your shit to xvid and you won't have to worry about it. They'll be less than a gig.

Umm, before actually going with an external HDD, consider how you'll be using it. If you don't envision needing the rips again for quite awhile (I'm thinking many many months) after your trips, you could always just rip them, transfer them from one to the other with a little USB key drive, and just watch them from the netbooks internal drive on your trip.
6/16/2009 3:08:07 PM
^ that's true...could always pick up a 4-16gb flash drive for $5-20 and put a couple on there at a time...it would certainly be less cumbersome and use less power (if the netbook comes with a card adapter, going with something like an SD card would be even better and virtually nothing would stick out)i assumed she wanted to keep more than just a couple of movies on the drive (as well as using it for other things)*shrug*EDIT: actually, according to the HP website, your netbook has an SD/MMC reader built-in (i assume it reads SDHC) so you can pick up 1/2/4/8/16gb SD cards and then you wouldn't really have to worry about a USB drive sticking outhttp://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01703934&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN[Edited on June 16, 2009 at 3:51 PM. ah, an interesting turn of events. this may be the way to gothanks for the ideas & links! i will try this out soon
6/16/2009 4:07:44 PM
Umm, I guess I had a brain fade, if you can get your machines on the same network where they can see each other, you wouldn't even need the USB key, just transfer them that way. Again, it just depends on how you'll use the rips. If you are going to need to access them frequently, an external drive would be the best. If you have a large collection and you'll only need a few on trips you take infrequently, then it might be easy enough to just rip as needed.

are these not very popular?I went to best buy in Greenville hoping to check some out and they had like 2.
6/20/2009 6:44:31 PM
BB in greeville blows. Most of the netbooks you will see are the retarded 8.9" AcersCheck out the Samsung N110 online. You won't be disappointed.
6/20/2009 8:24:10 PM
my impression is that they're still kind of new to the common person. techy type people have known about them for awhile(btw i consider my self a common person)

6/22/2009 12:35:20 PM
im consistently surprised how few people are aware of netbooks. every time i take it out, coworkers are curious and asking questions and have apparently never seen or heard of them
7/1/2009 9:40:41 PM
It may be possible that you work with either Luddites, retards or retard Luddites.
7/1/2009 9:58:21 PM
i was looking at these to use for mostly typing reports (microsoft word, excel, etc.) and maybe some occasional internet surfing. would you recommend buying a netbook for that purpose? also, do you think there will be good deals for black friday? i have a laptop, which works fine but little things have been happening (e.g., just had the screen replaced, the "3" key fell off). i'm not sure whether to hold it out and wait for a great deal or just get one now.
7/13/2009 3:21:15 PM
i wouldn't recommend them for typing a lot. they're great for just surfing (hence the name), but typing is cramped.
7/13/2009 3:29:49 PM
i'm looking to get one mainly for websurfing at home plus for use on trips when i have to give presentations and keep on top of email and whatnot.
7/13/2009 3:36:08 PM
eh, i do a fair amount of notetaking and coding on my 10" it can get cramped after awhile, but if you don't have giant man-hands i think you'll be okay.i've had my netbook since christmas and i'm still loving it.
7/13/2009 3:55:57 PM
some keys on the edges are smaller and i make more errors there but the letter keys are all normal sized and i have few problems. i love it because its portable, lightweight and so perfect for my weekend trips

so someone mentioned the samsung n110 up earlier in the thread and read up on it and it seems like a good machine. is there anywhere i can actually get my hands on one so i can actually see it before i lay down the money?
7/14/2009 11:23:47 PM
anyone know the answer to ^ question?
7/16/2009 11:39:04 AM
^probably not. Could find someone with an NC10. They're almost identical except for the larger trackpad and better battery.
7/16/2009 7:58:23 PM
can anyone recommend me a netbook that has the absolute most battery life? I would ideally like 8 hours. I will be using it for site surveying so I'll just need to hook up a wireless probe via USB, take some readings, take a few pics on my camera and load them via usb, and type a few things into excel. The smallest machine possible would be good.
8/5/2009 6:12:38 PM
to get a full 8 hours of computing time while using the USB port (which i assume will be powering the device, as well), you're most likely going to have get one with an extended (bulkier/heavier) battery and a unit with an SSD instead of a HDDanyone here actually get 8 hours of real use out of a netbook?[Edited on August 5, 2009 at 6:56 PM. 8/5/2009 6:55:56 PM
the device is just like a usb stick. it's basically a wireless radio
8/5/2009 6:56:54 PM
N280 proc is the lowest power-user currently available, i think...runs 2w at 1.66ghz instead of the N270's 2.5w at 1.60ghz...i don't know of any models that match that proc with an SSD by default, thoughthe 945GSE chipset (as well as the newer GN40) are both kind of power hungry at ~12w (especially compared to the supposed 6w of nvidia's ion platform), so that's a big drawbacki want to say that samsung has a definitive release date for their ion-powered (with N20 proc) N510 (around the 20th of august?), so you might want to wait for that if you want something that's different from what's offered now
8/5/2009 7:10:39 PM
Samsung NC10 and N110 have been the hotness for my buddy and I.
8/5/2009 7:15:25 PM
i don't understand why anyone would pay that much for a netbook. my thinkpad x41 is tiny , keyboard is great i get 4hrs+ batt and the performance kicks the netbooks in the vagina. oh yea and i bought it used for $400.
8/5/2009 7:24:17 PM
I too like bragging about 5 year old laptops
8/5/2009 7:27:13 PM
your netbook is an inch smaller and has half the performance of a 5 yr old laptop and we paid the same( paid $400 2yrs ago) ...hmmm[Edited on August 5, 2009 at 7:37 PM. Reason : .]
8/5/2009 7:35:22 PM
2.5lbs lighter suits me better in a laptop than does a marginal performance gain (debatable). What exactly are you doing on the thinkpad that can't be done with an atom processor? Obviously the table functionality is irrelevant.I haven't had a single time where I was like "Damn, if only I had purchased a 7lb laptop I could do this..."I guess people just have different needs.[Edited on August 5, 2009 at 7:50 PM. Reason : .]
8/5/2009 7:49:49 PM
Pentium m does literally twice the work of the atom clock for clock. the difference in weight is a result of the metal subframe vs all plastic. the jump from 1 lb to 3lbs isn't as noticeable as the jump from 1 to 7 or even 3 to 7. like you said I guess people just have different needs, but i don't understand why more people aren't considering ultra portables.

looks like I found what I'm looking for.The Asus Eee PC 1008HA and Asus Eee PC 1101HA do 6-8 hours of continuous video playback from a hard disk. If I swap in an SSD, I should be good to go.
8/6/2009 4:15:55 PM
Anyone have the Samsung NC20? Been skimming the thread, might have missed it.I'm interested in completely replacing my old desktop computer, and was leaning towards a laptop. Since I am now married, we have two desktops in the house (even though her's is a mac) and I don't think we need all of that. The most I use my desktop for these days is some excel work, word, internet, some video watching online and little flash based games when bored.we have a wireless router which would make me happy to finally have internet downstairs, and when traveling I would love to have a laptop/netbook to check the web/check emails. If the NC20 sounds too high end for what I would do, is the eee pc the way to go now?
8/11/2009 2:14:26 PM
i compared the what looked to be the cheapest asus eeepc with a 2gb ssd and an acer netbook for $70 more, and the acer was MUCH better. the asus seemed pretty cheap, and was hot as HELL. I don't know how much this is due to the celeron in the asus vs the atom in the acer, but either way i wouldn't want to deal with that kind of heat if i didnt have to.
8/11/2009 6:39:12 PM
K if I have a Sprint Blackberry with a SIM card + data plan, can I put that SIM card into a netbook like the Acer Asspire One and get wireless data?
8/25/2009 9:58:54 AM
^ the sim card is only going to be used if you travel abroad, your domestic wireless service is over the CDMA network which identifies by the ESN (electronic serial #) of your deviceThe new Sprint and Verizon phones that come with sim cards can work in countries with no CDMA service (the whole world besides the US and Canada). In the US they only work on CDMA. Odds are your sim card is not even activated unless you have international roaming enabled on your acct. ]
8/25/2009 10:17:19 AM
i had no idea that CDMA carriers were using SIM cards...they didn't used to...is that new?sure it's not a RUIM card?
8/25/2009 10:23:04 AM
it's fairly new
8/25/2009 10:24:43 AM
thanks for the info, i was wondering why i had a SIM card in my phone
8/25/2009 10:50:22 AM
are you SURE it's a SIM card and not a RUIM? they serve roughly the same purpose, but they're not the same (RUIM has been part of CDMA for 5 or 6 years, i think, but only china uses them on a regular basis...i think)i'm not arguing, really, but i can't see CDMA carriers adopting SIM cards, though it would be awesome
8/25/2009 10:58:57 AM
i just got an asus eee pc netbook for free when i bought a tv off of amazonits a 1005havery nice little machine...if you are in the market I'd recommend it.
8/25/2009 11:55:03 AM
^^ it's a Blackberry 8830 from Sprint...and it looks like a SIM card to me.
8/25/2009 1:19:53 PM
quag, BB's "world phones" have SIM cards in them. This includes the 8800 series, the Storm, & I believe the new Tour as well. They are designed to be used anywhere in the world (CDMA & GSM) and that's why they include the SIM card. They're CDMA here in the US and then you "activate" the SIM with Verizon/Sprint if you travel abroad (or you go and get a cheap pre-paid card once you're where you're going.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=11989521#Specificationsworth a shit?(and I know, in my thread regarding laptops I didnt want a netbook....but then i remembered the resolution of my current screen is 1024 vs 1366 of the above netbook
8/25/2009 8:43:43 PM
I bought a diff. version of that one and took it back after a week. The screen was fantastic, size was perfect, etc. Unfortunately, the Z520 was just too slow. Mine was the 3 cell, 250gb, Vista version. I loaded the Win7 Beta on it and it had issues (which are probably gone now so..). I'd love to find one that has the 1.6 in it to throw win7 on and try again though.
