yeah that's what I figured I read some of those reviews that claimed an intangible speedup with overall system performance, but no solid numbers application to application. Was hoping somebody had some practical experience using one.

My friend is wanting to buy a MBP. Probably the $1999 one. I remember it used to be cheaper to buy the regular model and update the ram yourself through crucial. Is this still the case with DDR3?

I bought my iMac back in Nov and did the same thing. I upgraded to 4GB of RAM for a little more than $100 if I remember correctly.

Got it at the following website - macrumors.com forum recommended it.

Apple should make this mod a standard feature for future Macbooks...

just picked up the 17" model. I was a bit hesitant because i had a 17" laptop before but it was a giant brick made by HP several years ago. I'm definitely loving this! The screen is really awesome.

"I might be wrong, but it's sad Dell can make a 15.4" laptop with an hdmi port that plays 1080p videos using a relatively nice ATI 3450 256mb for 750$ and Apple can't do this with a 1100$ 13" Macbook."

As much as I hate to admit this (HAHA) the Macbook does have some redeeming features for its premium price. First off, the multi-touch mouse pad is great. Unless I am blind it doesn't seem like there is a fan, so basically the machine is designed not to get hot at all really which is convenient for laying in the bed and have it resting on you legs on top of the cover and it never gets more than 'warm' even after extended use. Other than that, its still hard for me to justify the premium cost, however this Mbook that I have been playing with has at least made a reasonably compelling argument for its price. Obviously the form factor of it is great, the minimalistic design of the keyboard and tactical feedback of the keystrokes is addicting... weird I know.

the HDMI argument is just cherry-picking - "OMG, look at this one feature on this cheaper Dell that the MacBook doesn't have!"
Anyway, the Mac vs. PC pricing arguments rarely take into consideration the most important point - with a Mac, you are running OS X and all the bundled software.

^ Yeah, its does seem like since Apple makes their machines and software the two are more tailored for one another and melds together quite well, but still, the cost is always a concern for me.

you could also just buy this single miniDP to HDMI adapter and be done with it.

I guess that's as good as having to buy an HDMI-> DVI adapter to hook your Dell up to your normal monitor.

haha yeah i know.

i had already shelled out $30 for the miniDP to DVI before monoprice had 'em, and then i bought a new monitor that came with a DVI to HDMI cable.

so for now, i'm rocking ghetto.

I've finally decided to jump on this bandwagon.

I'm getting about $1k back from taxes and want to put it towards a Macbook. I'd really like to keep it under $1300.

Is there a better deal to be had than this? http://ncsu.collegestoreonline.com/ePOS?this_category=152&store=432&item_number=40000038564&form=shared3%2fgm%2fdetail%2ehtml&design=432

Where can I find 4gbx2 ddr3 for the macbook pro? Newegg doesn't seem to carry it. The couple places i found on google are for ~$800 and I've never heard of them.

It's been exactly 22 days since it was purchased. And I dont have the box it came in anymore.

Can I return it and get get my money back?

Called Apple.

They were VERY strict about the 14 day policy. Apparently not a damn thing I can do.

Anand: "The Best Battery Life I’ve Ever Seen"

for the new 15" MBP

Quote :
"Eight, freakin, hours. I couldn't believe it. In my lightest test, the new 15-inch MacBook Pro lasted eight hours and eight minutes. That's with the screen at half brightness (completely usable) and no funny optimizations. The notebook is just playing music and surfing through a lot of my old reviews. There's no way this could be right. Maybe my test was too light?
"

Quote :
"The battery tests are repeatable however. I saw anywhere from a 50 - 100% improvement in battery life over the old MacBook Pro. Given the increase in battery capacity alone, you should see no less than a 46% increase in battery life. Exactly what is accounting for the expanded life above and beyond that, I'm not sure.

Either way, Apple's 7 hour claim is well within reason. For light workloads, even on WiFi, you can easily expect 6.5 - 8 hours out of the new 15-inch MBP. As I write this article on that very system I'm told that I have nearly 8.5 hours left on my charge. If you do a lot of writing on your notebook, the new MBP is exactly what you'll want; it will easily last you on a cross-country flight if you need to get work done."

Quote :
"There’s no other way to say this. If you care about battery life and portability at all, buy the new MacBook Pro. Go to the Apple store and buy one. While I only tested the 15” model, I’m guessing the 13” model should leave a similar lasting impression.
"

so i bought one of these 13 inch macbook pros

pretty sweet, screen is lightyears better than my unibody macbook i bought (and sold) last fall.

Does need calibration out of the box but its a gorgeous display

I'm more than happy with the performance of my 13 inch unibody, but using my GF's 15 inch pro (less than a year old), I've started appreciating the backlit keyboard a lot more. That and battery life is really all I would like extra from my computer. Seems silly to upgrade now, but darn 7 hours sounds pretty good...

^^

I haven't had that problem....the colors were a tad washed out when I opened the box, I downloaded a color profile someone created using a Spyder Pro, looks awesome now.

That being said, all the colors definitely "pop," but I think its one of the best looking displays I've seen.

BTW I have a 9CBD display which appears to be one of the brighter ones

EDIT: Also I think people are just not used to wide gamut displays?

i think i'd rather just wait 3 months for every other laptop maker to catch up to what's offered in the Apple laptops, and do it for a lower price with more options.

I guess I should have included the phrase "of the features I care about"

OS X and the aluminum body aren't on that list.

But 8 hours of battery life, and potentially from a battery that you could replace once it goes bad? Yeah, I could see that coming, or at least close enough to it that it wouldn't matter.

Because I'm using a Mac right now. OS X isn't something I particularly care about, but I can use it just as well as Windows in it's incarnations, plus Bootcamp makes any Apple laptop fair game for a Windows user. Right now the 13 inch Macbook intrigues me. At 1k it's the best small notebook out right now in it's price range.

But usually Asus will catch up to their hardware in about 3-4 months or so.

[Edited on June 14, 2009 at 9:54 PM. Reason : I should mention my normal laptop is 2.5 years old, so i'm starting to get back in the market]

Not stupid, not trolling, just happen to pay attention to who rolls out what kind of hardware and when over the last 3-4 years.

It's not that hard, a little research will show you the same.
