All the modern day comedies have happy endings.

Character gets job back, girlfriend back, life back, etc.

It's probably been mentioned before in the thread but:

1) The main character gets to his loved one just in time to have them die in his arms, then when they die it cuts to an over the head shot as he dramatically screams "NOOOOO!!!!" while looking up.

2) The hero walks away casually from a building/vehicle that he has just set up a bomb in/set fire to, often while putting on sunglasses and acting as if nothing is going on. The building/vehicle explodes in a giant cloud of fire behind him. He doesn't even flinch and continues to walk away as if nothing happened. Sometimes there will be a henchman or villain in said building/vehicle.

Both of these occurred in the Wolverine movie.

^ Regarding #2

Quote :
""A major character is seen walking nonchalantly toward the camera and away from a big, napalm-like explosion. Even the Coens use this in "No Country for Old Men." I believe the granddaddy of all such scenes to be the opening stinger in "Goldfinger" in which James Bond is the only person in a nightclub not reacting to a huge explosion nearby, an explosion for which he is responsible."

from rogerebert.com"

4th post in the thread. And yes. I agree completely.

A couple having sex, being interrupted by a ringing phone, and then one of them having to leave before sex is finished because they're important.

dunno if it's been mentioned but i was watching something within the last week (cant remember what it was) and one scene ended with someone looking into a cabinet/refrigerator whatever and they close the lid/door. Then someone in the next scene opens another openable thing and that starts that scene

i dont really know if im annoyed by it, but it IS a cliché nonetheless.

i hate movies where a white cop has to team up with a cop of a different race/class/ethnic group/blood type and has to be cultured

tv shows where the president is black.

movies like milk where all the butt sex seems to just be something for shock value

but to be honest

i am a judgemental asshole

and i overanalyze these things and call the director a dumbass and an asshole

but like i said

i am a judgemental asshole

when an animal has to choose between two people, and the entire town is on the "good side" coaxing and cheering and the bad guy is yelling at it.

^^^ One handed shotgun pump.

You know, where they just hold it by the pump at their side and make a big jerk off motion with the weapon before returning it to standard firing position.

slapping the little red light on top of an unmarked cop car to fly through traffic after a criminal only to be stopped by some intersection blocking pile-up. cue the car horns and angry drivers yelling at each other.

Probably already posted but...

When introducing the characters, the "bad guys" are seen doing some unecessarily evil action, such as curb-stomping an infant, to demonstrate how "evil" they are, justifying the killing of said bad guys by the hero.

trebuchets/catapults that can launch car-sized stones about a half mile.
see: Lord of the Rings

uncannily accurate muskets and pre-1900s pistols
see: the Patriot

The scenes where someone will be pointing a gun at an unarmed person and you hear a gunshot

But it turns out it was someone off screen who shot the guy with the gun, and the unarmed person is fine

Often happens at the climax of shitty movies, just to reinforce their shittyness

Sorry if mentioned before, but saw a big one in the Star Trek sneak peek during Lost last night:
Man is being chased by a giant monster. Just as the monster is about to get him, an even larger monster grabs/bites the first monster. Larger monster then continues pursuit of man. This was also seen in The Phantom Menace.

I like it when the larger monster kills the smaller monster but doesn't chase the man, and the man gets off scot free

like when the Trex got the raptors in JP

On page 1 Dammit100 had a list of actors who always play the same role:

Quote :
"you forgot Mike Myers, Matthew McConaghey, Vince Vaughn, Jack Nicholson, Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Heather Graham, and Sandra Bullock."

I think its wrong and down right disrespectful to have Jack Nicholson on that list.

yea I think that has been mentioned several times, as has the character walking away with explosion in the background

one metaphor that I think has been used to ad nauseum (sp?) is the long winding staircase

Said before, but when someone dying croaks "so... cold..."

I'm looking at you, Wolverine movie. Also your secondary explosions (i.e. the burning wreckage that manages to explode again, triggered by the main character.)
