Thing is, they don't look smart. Neither party was wrong in the matter. It was a geographic terminology difference - same situation as to what "barbeque" refers to. Nothing more. Oh and MI are in your "midwest."

ANYWAYS, I have no clue where Michigan looks next. I don't think they can hire on the inside. No one is qualified enough yet.

dude from cincy
12/2/2007 11:20:50 PM
No, they don't.People's perceptions of national sports are extremely skewed in the south. Everyone here is very collegecentric (for lack of a better term) do to the lack of pro sports teams in general. Clearly, the SEC and ACC are going to be huge when there were never NFL teams in the area until the very recent past. The NBA has never gained a foothold here because of college basketball's popularity. Now, examine the Northeast where college sports are almost totally irrelevant, or the midwest where, yes they love their Buckeyes and their Huskers but frankly the fans of those schools are dwarfed by the number of Bulls, Cardinals, Bears, Cubs, Browns, Indians, Lions, and Tigers fans.College loyalties are largely based on either family allegiance due to alumni ties or regionality when no pro team is present. Even those people with no college background are divided (how many Wal-Mart UNC fans or trailer park Dukies do you see? Right, a lot, but now consider that most of them are either Panthers or Redskins fans and don't give a shit about those schools in football).

12/2/2007 11:22:28 PM
^^^^ some valid points, but still doesnt mean that people from the SE dont care about USC vs. Cal... or that someone in Washington State wouldnt have extreme interest in Florida vs. Georgia[Edited on December 2, 2007 at 11:23 PM. Reason : d]
12/2/2007 11:22:48 PM
I don't know where dude is from in Michigan, but I've never once heard someone from Michigan refer to it as the Northeast. Karim, care to comment?
12/2/2007 11:22:52 PM
if i were to say where mi and oh was, id say north or northeast, not midwesttechnically, midwest would be the colorado area[Edited on December 2, 2007 at 11:24 PM. Reason : d]

True, but by and large the masses just don't care about nationwide college football. Just check the ratings for say.... a Monday Night Football game featuring Atlanta vs. Detroit and a primetime matchup between Cal and USC. I can all but guarantee that the MNF game will draw more viewers.

Barbeque is a noun referring to the object upon which you apply hear to ribs, burgers, or hotdogs. That is correct. Any other regional definition is wrong.
12/2/2007 11:25:05 PM
Serious question: Do you consider Hawaii in the Southwest?
12/2/2007 11:25:20 PM
12/2/2007 11:26:00 PM
^^^^^ thats because there are SO many games to watch in college... When USC is playing you might also have Tenn vs. Bama, Florida vs. FSU, Texas vs. Oklahoma.and just because the NFL has higher ratings doesnt mean that college football is regional, they arent connected[Edited on December 2, 2007 at 11:26 PM. 12/2/2007 11:26:16 PM
The pro team density is a valid point...
12/2/2007 11:26:35 PM
i would consider hawaii not part of the continental 48, and you couldnt geographically locate them in relation to the majority of the nation

12/2/2007 11:35:38 PM
Is Matt Flynn goiing to be starting for LSU in the NC game? I guess I was out of the loop and don't recall what his injury is at all. If he's starting I think its gonna be an LSU smackdown. If their 2nd string guy is starting I think it'll be close but with LSU still pulling it off.
12/2/2007 11:36:44 PM
i grew up in the suburbs of detroit and we all considered ourselves in the midwest
12/2/2007 11:37:21 PM

12/2/2007 11:42:11 PM
you'd probably see more UNC hats than LT jerseys though
12/2/2007 11:48:17 PM
Quite likely, but I would love to see you ask them how the UNC football team is doing.College basketball has a much broader appeal than college football. This is largely due to the fact that the NBA has done a piss poor job promoting itself compared to the NFL. Still, another counterpoint, I bet you see 5x more Yankees and BoSox hats than UNC hats.
12/2/2007 11:51:22 PM
12/2/2007 11:51:55 PM
It doesn't. I didn't give a damn about college basketball until moving to NC (still sorta don't).[Edited on December 2, 2007 at 11:53 PM. Reason : words]

12/2/2007 11:53:35 PM
Really? I find that surprising given the sheer numbers of it all. Over 300 "major" college basektball teams, only 119 "major" college football teams, 30+ regular season games (much of that schedule played with no real competition for air time), the biggest playoff extravaganza in sports, etc.
12/2/2007 11:54:13 PM
it's pretty obvious that everyone in this thread is arguing their position based entirely on personal experiencewhich means that everyone is right!

Still, LSU by 20. Big Ten's top 3 teams will lose by a combined 60+ points.

I can guarantee ohio thtate loses by no more than 10 (if they lose). Illinois will indeed lose by 2-3 touchdowns.
