TOB says you better fill this damn stadium up for the Red & White Game! We need you Pack Nation to help us impress the recruits and get them to commit.Seriously though if you are in the Triangle area do your part and go to the Red & White game. There's only so much we can do that can affect the outcome of recruiting. This is one of them.

Here is the audio and some quotes from O'Brien's segment.Yesterday, NC State head coach Tom O'Brien discussed spring practice on The Sports Drive, a daily radio show on ESPN Radio 93.1 FM in Columbia, South Carolina. The show airs Monday-Friday from 3-6 in the afternoons and can be accessed via the Internet at http://www.ESPNColumbia.com. Click "The Sports Drive" and listen live. The show is hosted by Rich Taylor and Jonathan Reynolds. Here is the audio and some quotes from O'Brien's segment which aired live Monday afternoon.Tom O'Brien on ESPN Radio 93.1 FM"The biggest thing you get out of spring practice is individual improvement.""We had our second scrimmage last week, and talking to the coaches they think we are making strides in the right direction.""I think everybody was somewhat embarrassed by the way we played the last game of the year.""The coaches did a great job. We changed a lot of things around and we changed some people around. As you said, we went on a four-game winning streak and got ourselves back to .500 at 5-5 and had a chance to make ourselves bowl eligible.""You look five years down the road, I think this conversation will not be taking place anymore because I think the strength of our conference, we will be, I believe, the power conference in the country in five years.""He's competing right now with Justin Burke and Harrison Beck. Daniel Evans is out with a shoulder injury this week so he's not practicing. We're taking a long look at Russell and giving him a lot of opportunities. As you've said, he has a lot of talent. He's an exciting player. The proof is going to be hopefully [when] we get into a game situation here on Saturday and see how he reacts to that. Quarterback, you can only get better by playing. The more reps we can give him the better he can be. I don't know if our quarterback situation will be solved until right before the game against Carolina because we also have a great freshman coming in from Northern Virginia, [Mike] Glennon, that we signed. He certainly will have his opportunities in preseason also.""We moved two guys from defense to offense, Ted Larsen and John Bedics, and they've been good moves for us this spring. Those two kids have had a lot to learn, but they are working extremely hard, they are very intense, they are in to it, they want to learn, and they are going to get better. I think that is going to help us on the offensive line. I think that is the most crucial part.""You look at our quarterback play last year, we threw 14 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. You certainly can't be any good. We were last in the league in turnover ratio. A lot of that has to do with both the quarterback and the offensive line. Those are the two main emphasis points for us as we try to get better as individuals. We have to make those individuals play better up front, and I think with Bedics and Larsen they have helped the returning guys, Crouch, Meares Green, and Williams, those guys that have been around and played for us last year. They are going to make that a little tougher group and a better group hopefully than we were a year ago.""It's a great opportunity for our football team, especially to come down and play a Steve Spurrier-coached football team.""It's the national stage. It's Thursday night. All college football fans will be watching, so it should be a great night and a great experience for all of us."

Going to USC and winning that game would be a GREAT thing for the ACC and NC State. Everyone in the ACC will be pulling for us just for inner-conference pride

Marcus Stone will hit you with a flying karate kick if you don't go to the Red & White Game.
4/17/2008 8:07:00 AM
i doubt he'll go to that much effort, since he's not on the team anymore

http://www.wral.com/sports/999thefan/story/2743440/"One thing State fans should be excited about going into 2008 is that 5-7 will not stand for O'Brien, and he puts the blame on himself. To find out what else the coach had to say, you have to listen."
4/17/2008 9:24:50 AM
^^ oh I know he's not on the team anymore, but he is alumni, and cared greatly for this school and program. even though his QB career was a little lackluster, despite starting 5-1 as a starter, he made us all proud to be Wolfpackers. he put the team first (something a few of our bball players need to start doing) and worked extremely hard. he came up huge for us last year, especially with Anthony Hill out. besides Jamelle Eugene's emergence, who else can you say had more meaningful contributions to the team last year? he was a leader and loved playing for us. you could see how much it meant to him when they showed his face on the sidelines as UNC was marching down the field on that final drive.I hope Marcus Stone can get drafted in a late round or at least get on with a team somewhere. He was a really good TE for us last year. If Jacksonville can draft that one guy from Arkansas, who was a QB but never played TE, and move him to TE and him be successful doing so, then Stone should be able to get on with a team somewhere after playing the position for over a year.
4/17/2008 9:36:12 AM
^he was my favorite player last year. i was as hard on him as anybody when he was playing qb. but last year he showed that he is the definition of team.

http://www.wral.com/sports/football/ncaa/story/2745985/Duke Hopes Intense Spring Leads to End of Jokes By JOEDY McCREARY AP Sports WriterDURHAM, N.C. — Duke's players have heard all the jokes before. They've heard the wisecrackers snicker that the only guaranteed victory on the schedule is the spring game. But, the Blue Devils insist, practice has been different this spring. With 13 practices complete and the annual intrasquad scrimmage on the horizon, new coach David Cutcliffe and his new batch of assistants have set the tone for a summer of renewed drive. The goal: Finally ending the futility that has haunted this program for well more than a decade."We always did have that dedication, no matter who the coach was. It's about us wanting to turn this program around," nose guard Ayanga Okpokowuruk said Wednesday. "These coaches are here to give us that little edge that we need to turn this program around."Duke's program has racked up 13 consecutive sub-.500 seasons, has lost at least 10 games in three straight years and hasn't played in a bowl game since 1994. So naturally, the No. 1 goal for the Blue Devils is getting rid of that loser's label."It's hunger. I think when players are hungry, and these guys are hungry, that they're willing to go the extra mile," Cutcliffe said. "They have listened to us from Day 1. ... Our staff does a good job of establishing a tempo and an intensity level on the field. They have met those expectations."Along the way, the Blue Devils have lost plenty of weight - a byproduct of the push Cutcliffe made for faster, quicker players throughout the depth chart. For example, players combined to lose more than 300 pounds during winter weight-room workouts, and 200-pound receiver Eron Riley trimmed his body-fat percentage from more than 10 percent to less than 7 percent."I attribute the focus and the effort in a big way to what our strength staff was able to do over the winter conditioning period, because our football team came to work this spring," Cutcliffe said. After Saturday's scrimmage, Cutcliffe hopes the players return in August with the same vigor, which the two players competing for quarterback will need, especially since Cutcliffe described that spot as "a competitive situation."Incumbent starter Thaddeus Lewis likely will enter the fall preseason camp as the Blue Devils' first-string quarterback, Cutcliffe said, adding that one-time starter Zack Asack also worked with the first team this spring.Lewis, who threw for 4,564 yards and 32 touchdowns in two seasons, started as a first-year freshman in 2006 when then-starter Asack was suspended for plagiarism. Now he'll have the first crack in 2008 at starting for the noted guru who coached the last two Super Bowl MVPs, Peyton and Eli Manning, when they were in college.Cutcliffe was hired in December to replace the fired Ted Roof after a 1-11 finish and to bring to Durham the touch that made the Mannings stars at Tennessee and Mississippi, respectively. More importantly, he returned to head coaching to change the environment at one of the nation's losingest programs in the Bowl Subdivision."I'm assisting our players, and they're the ones changing the culture. That can't be given - that has to be earned," Cutcliffe said. "If they're willing to earn it, and I'm talking to them right now ... I'll be there to assist them."I am going to put people on notice here: We've come to play some football. We intend to let people know that we're lining up and playing."

http://www2.tbo.com/content/2008/apr/16/sp-bull-china-shop-broken-trophy/UF Mystery Solved; Plant High Player Admits To MishapBy BILL WARDThe Tampa TribunePublished: April 16, 2008TAMPA - Gator Nation, the mystery is solved. It was Plant High tight end Orson Charles who broke your 2006 BCS National Championship trophy Friday in Gainesville. It was, of course, an accident. And Charles said he is genuinely sorry for knocking the handcrafted Waterford crystal off a coffee table and onto the ground, where, just outside of Coach Urban Meyer's office, it shattered. While in Gainesville competing in a Nike training camp, Charles said he and another prep player were touring the football stadium. That's where the BCS trophy, along with Gators quarterback Tim Tebow's Heisman Trophy, were on display. While leaning over to take a photo of the Heisman, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Charles said he bumped into the BCS trophy - he thinks with his backside - and knocked it to the ground."If you were outside the stadium, it was so loud, I think you would've heard it shatter," Charles said. "Nobody said anything for 10 minutes, then Florida assistant Coach John Hevesy said, 'What do I do? Who do I call? Did you know that was $35,000!'"I just stood there with this baby look and said, 'Sorry.' Then he joked and said, 'You've got to commit to Florida now.'"Charles, who will be a senior at Plant next season, has 16 Division I offers. He ranks Miami first on his list, but shortly after breaking the crystal he said Meyer joked about the mishap by asking, "How does it feel to be a Gator?" Charles said Meyer assured him insurance will replace the trophy. Before Charles broke the trophy, Plant coach Robert Weiner said Meyer asked him to describe Charles. Weiner told Meyer that Charles was a "physical specimen" but sometimes a "bull in a china shop.""After what happened," Weiner said, "I'm sure Urban now thinks I'm an excellent evaluator of talent."

http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/ncsu/story/1041578.htmlSpring brings change for Wolfpack footballWolfpack is testing several players at new positionsChip Alexander, Staff WriterRALEIGH - Spring is about new beginnings, and spring football can mean new beginnings at new positions. So it has been at N.C. State for such players as Koyal George and Robbie Leonard, John Bedics and Ted Larsen, and others. Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien and his staff have made personnel shifts, using spring practice to see if the players can handle new assignments, fill team needs.A year ago, George was a wide receiver, a former walk-on hoping to make an appearance -- even a cameo -- in the Pack's spring game. Saturday, when the annual Red-White Game is held at Carter-Finley Stadium, George will line up at cornerback, and he should see plenty of playing time."We took him from offense, and he's playing field corner and doing a great job for us," O'Brien said this week.Leonard, a backup safety last season, could start at outside linebacker, albeit at 194 pounds. Bedics and Larsen, both defensive linemen, now are on the offensive line."It's awfully difficult to learn to play in the offensive line, but they've attacked it," O'Brien said. "They both look like, in the long run, it's going to be a good move for us."Moving to cornerback wasn't a surprise for George, a rising redshirt junior from Havelock. During the Pack's bye week last season, he got a look at safety."That was a chance to experiment, to see how it would work out for this spring," George said. "I guess they liked what they saw, so they put me in there."But not at safety."Koyal doesn't have a lot of weight in his pants," defensive backs coach Mike Reed said with a laugh, noting that at 5 feet 11 and 169 pounds, George was better suited for cornerback."It has been a big change," George said. "They just threw me to the fire out there. I'm learning it, but it will take some time."As the field corner, George often has the responsibility of covering the receiver split wide in the offensive formation. He said he has already received his welcome to the position.Seems that wide receiver Donald Bowens made a move, slipped past George and scored in the Pack's last scrimmage."Yeah, he burned me," George said, smiling. "It was a long one. Coach got on me about it. D-Bow, my boy, got on me about it."I respect that. I have a lot of respect for cornerbacks. You really don't know how hard it is until you go over there and try it and play it yourself."George played cornerback and safety at Havelock High but was more of an offensive star, averaging 24 yards a catch as a senior. Spurning some small-college offers, he walked on at N.C. State.A scout-team player his first season, he played in three games his second season, then earned a scholarship last year in O'Brien's first season as coach. He played in every game and had three catches, including a 25-yarder for a touchdown in the win over Virginia.Reed said George's time at wideout has helped him adapt to the new position."He can relate to certain things receivers do in getting open," Reed said. "As a defensive back, it's always good to have an offensive mentality."He's very athletic. When you have a kid with his athleticism, he can make the transition. It has been a pleasure to see him progress."State's practices are closed, but George apparently has made such rapid progress in learning the techniques and the demands of the position that he's pushing DeAndre Morgan, last year's starter at field corner."Some people can go out there one time and do it [while] other guys need the repetitions," Reed said. "Koyal needs the repetitions, but he also learns well, which is a testament to how smart he is as a person and as a player."George said he already has thought of the Pack's 2008 opener -- at South Carolina, a Thursday night game, before 80,000 at Williams-Brice Stadium."South Carolina, ESPN, GameDay, the whole thing," he said, shaking his head."Hopefully I'll be ready by then."
4/18/2008 11:02:20 AM
he needs to be more self confident, "hope i'm ready by then" should be "hell yeah" or "i'm gonna pound those cocks into the ground"
4/18/2008 11:28:17 AM
we saw how well the brash, overconfidence worked out under the amato regime... no thanks.
4/18/2008 11:39:57 AM
critics? what critics?
4/18/2008 11:41:23 AM
George is a hard worker and a really humble kid, I wouldn't expect anything else from him. He sits next to me in this ridiculous STS class and puts in more work in the class than anyone else I've seen...Being outwardly humble and still inwardly confident in your abilities is a good thing. I think the best will always be the ones who know they always have something else to learn and know they can always get better and should get better
