I say if Davidson feels Olsen is what our offense needs, then take him, otherwise my draft board would be:1. Laron Landry2. Patrick Willis3. Reggie Nelson

We need to lure Briggs from Chi-town. Why would we be restructuring contracts like crazy if we werent going to make a big move?Trade up to Chicago with our draft pick to help entice the Briggs deal. We dont need a mid 1st round pick THAT bad anyways.....

4/19/2007 4:16:30 PM
^^don't forget, teams need approx. 4 mil to sign draft picks.
4/19/2007 4:20:00 PM
I'll be amazed if we are able to keep Peppers, he's already expressed interest in being the highest paid DE in the league.
4/19/2007 4:49:14 PM
and we will most likely make him that, b/c he is the best DE in the league at present. And, as i've said before, he'll have a career, maybe record breaking year with McGlover on the other side this year.....barring injury of course.
4/19/2007 4:55:02 PM
I'm sure we'd love to, but we are in bad shape cap wise. Mix that with the price tag Steve Smith is going to draw and it should be interesting.
4/19/2007 5:16:24 PM
i think we'll do everything possible to keep peppers and smith bothi mean they're arguably the best WR and DE in the league
4/19/2007 5:19:46 PM
I really would not be suprised if the Panthers go DE with their first pick. Not that I really want it to happen, but I could see it, especially the way Fox is known to draft suprise picks that no one really thinks about. With Rucker's future in question and Wallace gone (stupid move IMO) we're reallyyy thin at DE. And if this has already been talked about in this thread, sorry, I'm too lazy to go back through it.I wouldnt mind someone like Arkansas' Jamaal Anderson. From what I've seen, he looks pretty nasty. Here's a list of the best DE prospects: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/rankings/de.html
4/19/2007 6:27:00 PM
If we really needed to we could sign either Peppers or Smith to a big deal and put the franchise tag other the other depending on how they perform in the next couple of years. That said we need to keep both of them because they are both the best players at their respective position.
4/19/2007 7:29:01 PM
Richardson has been quoted several times stating that we would find the funds to sign both Peppers and Smith.
4/19/2007 7:36:14 PM
4/19/2007 8:55:31 PM
^^^I'm not 100% sure how the franchise tag works, but if you put it on Steve or Peppers, would the reaction not be the same as Briggs? From my understanding the franchise tag makes it very difficult to outbid the original team w/ the options other teams have to give up for trying to get a franchise player. I would think that niether player would accept the franchise tag too well.Again, I am probably wrong, somebody please explain to me where I am wrong on the franchise tag if I am wrong.
4/19/2007 9:45:05 PM
i may be wrong, but i think with the franchise tag, you can guarantee that you keep a player if you pay him at least the average of the top 5 salaries at that position? that maybe slightly off but its something like that
4/19/2007 9:56:09 PM
yep, with a franchise tag, you're paying the player the average top 5 salary of his position. If the other teams sign your franchise player away, they have to give you 2 first round picks, so that basically means no team signs franchise player away from other teams, because the price is too steep.

dear panthers: i might be available in the 2nd roundsincerely, reggie nelsonaka michael griffin's bitch]
4/25/2007 4:55:36 PM
heard today on ESPN we might be dealing down with Denver so we can get a safety.Sounds like a good move to me, we could definitely use an extra draft pick
4/25/2007 5:04:52 PM
^any links? That would be a most interesting development...And also WTF are we gonna do about Jenkins?!?! Is he going to be involved at all in said Denver deal?[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 10:50 AM. Reason : KJ]
4/26/2007 10:48:58 AM
The Panthers signed signed Mr Franchise Gilbert and gave away 2 first rounders, has happened...I can see where a team that pics late in the first round almost always would gladly give 2 first rounders for Peppers. We could never find a replacement even with 3 first rounders.[Edited on April 26, 2007 at 6:42 PM. Reason : w]

The Charlotte observer is saying we need to pick up a few starters from the draft: defensive end, linebacker, a safety and a receiver. http://www.charlotte.com/141/story/99445.html
4/27/2007 12:46:26 PM
^ I think that article is trying to be sarcastic about expecting four starters from the draft even though we would obviously love for that to happen....
4/27/2007 2:23:56 PM
Pulled this off the panthershuddle site:http://community.heraldonline.com/?q=you_want_rumors_you_got_rumorsLook at the comments section where they are talking about griffin and the author of the article posts "who said anything about griffin?"Could it be Meriweather they are after?interesting to say the least
4/27/2007 3:32:02 PM
I don't know about Merriweather, the Panthers staff has been steering clear of players with legal issues.
4/27/2007 3:40:16 PM
am i the only one who strongly does not want a tight end in the first couple rounds
4/27/2007 4:06:11 PM
I don't want to draft Greg Olsen at 14th.
4/27/2007 4:08:19 PM
but also a TE adds a threat down the middle...and Jake doesnt usually throw picks when he throws to the sides...so...
4/27/2007 4:36:43 PM
4/27/2007 5:48:33 PM
I just think if you dont have a Gates or Gonzo or Crumpler or Heap its almost not even worth itBut I guess a lot of it depends on what the new OC wants to run
4/27/2007 6:34:25 PM
man this thread depresses me...sounds like if not this year, then really soon the panthers are going to SUCK(sounds like we are gonna lose peppers or smith, or both...plus we are thinking of drafting a fucking TIGHT END in the FIRST round?!?!??!)
4/27/2007 6:38:02 PM
4/27/2007 6:48:33 PM
not recently...i think i read some of this page though

Jessie Daniels and Sylvan Young were the two guys I never heard mentioned alot in predraft. I thought Daniels might of still been in school, he is good one make no mistake about it. Does anyone know where Young went?

I don't know about making Gross a priority......never really stood out as a dominant player, but in his defense, he has been shifted around alot.
5/9/2007 11:09:13 AM
Gross is not a Pro Bowler, but he's the best that we have, so that's why we're trying to keep him, plus he's still young.
5/9/2007 11:48:00 AM
once we pick a spot for him gross will excelmaye not a pro bowler, but solid
5/9/2007 8:18:38 PM
5/9/2007 11:40:19 PM
^2 year ago, Seattle's entire left-side of the ball. Most teams thought exactly that. "Oh shit, we have to slide a ton of protection to the left side."
5/10/2007 12:40:53 AM
Yeah, I can see how a whole offensive line unit can create problems for a defense (seattle last year, panthers in 03) but one single player? I've always thought effectiveness of the offensive line depends more on the team's scheme and the team's skill players, then sheer offensive line talent. It's nice in theory to have a LT you can just put out there on an island ... but can any one person consistently block the leagues elite ends? Doubt it. And a guard can throw the best drive block in the world, but if the back doesn't see the hole, or if one of the other lineman fuck up, what good is it?
5/10/2007 1:47:00 AM
there are several teams that have dominant tackles and overwhelmingly run to that side.....a dominant tackle (especially blind side) can "hide" alot of overall line weakness. There are always a few tackles taken in the First round of the draft (compared to guards or centers), so they must be pretty important.I just notice gross getting beat/getting penalties alot, maybe its just me. Don't get me wrong, I know he is a good player, but I'm not sure if he is one to make a "priority".[Edited on May 10, 2007 at 10:14 AM. Reason : .]
5/10/2007 10:13:14 AM
Regardless if Gross is a probowler or not, he is a good enough O lineman to warrant resigning. Remember last year, ppl? We would have killed to have one more healthy O lineman when injuries popped up. Whos to say our current crop of O linemen isnt injury prone like Dan Morgan? It could be argued that we would have easily made the playoffs last year if we werent so thin at OL (they wore down at the end of so many games). We should sign the guy because it helps make sure we can field a solid OL this year. Wouldnt it suck if we had massive OL injuries and flush yet another season down the tubes for the same reason as last year?
5/10/2007 1:29:00 PM
I don't doubt we should resign him......i'm just concerned that making him a "priority" means overpaying, and sacrificing other moves to improve the team.
