We planned on fishing Friday and Saturday but due to a birthday party we were out late and I just couldn't muster the strength to do it. It ended up raining all Friday so we just spent the day rigging and setting up a planer system.

Forecast looked great Saturday so we left Oregon-Inlet at 5 am and decided to head to the Point and look for mahi. About 5 miles into the ride I decided that we should gamble and head out to the Tuna hole and look for some YFT's. Bunch of charters and stick-boats cir-ca-lating on a 100 fathoms, with a couple of billfish bites. We kept working the same water and staying with the porpoises and pilot whales.

Around 12, the long rigger starts screaming and I look up and its still clipped in a the rigger. I jumped up ripped the line out and luckily it it comes tight. The way it was running I thought we snagged an ocean sunfish or a board but line is just peeling. Getting panicked, I put the drag in the full position and it stops running but I can't get line back. I slip the drag back and line just keeps peeling. So, fearing we were snagged our going to get spooled we back down and I gain some line. Now, my line is straight down and I can feel it swimming (I knew it was a good big-eye). These fish dive back down to their swimming grounds and that can be way down, we were in 100 fathoms or 600 feet.

The sun was fucking brutal and I fought it with just a belt, no harness, for a solid hour and a half. I was cramping like shit and it looked like I went for a swim because of the sweat. Got the fish to the boat and I see this monster and I'm shitting my pants! My dad sticks the fish and I drop the rod and grab the second gaff and dragged the fucker over.

The Fish...

After the bleed out...

Burnt some fuel on the way home because I laid the hammer down, (it was flat, just look at the water).

Got word of a Hoo and Bill bite, about 50 miles NE of the Inlet so we rounded up my little brother for some summer action. Left the ramp around 5:30 after waiting out some lightning and ran NE out with some of the fleet to around the 0100.

Around 9, the right long rigger goes off and doesn't come tight, then followed by the right short. A suicidal white marlin has decided he is hungry but before we can react, he grabs the left rigger and is hooked. Handed the rod to Mac and he fought his first White for about 15 mins. Brought it to the boat, snapped a pic, and off he went.

Trolled north to about the 0114 and found tons of baiting being pushed to the surface and good marks. All of a sudden the right rigger gets mauled but then once again, goes slack, cut off by Mr. Wahoo but he wasn't done! Seconds later he snips the short right rigger, right gunwale rig and then the left short rigger before he freight trains the left long. Mac brings him to close to the boat and I realize I have the wrong gaff and this thing is a :bigfish:, all of 70+, it looked like a JDAM in the water. But we got a little horsey and the line snapped before I could get a gaff shot.

Trolled the rest of the afternoon through bait and good marks with only a a visit from another white who greyhounded up the middle of the spread and then left. Called it a a day at 3:30 with a 60 mile run ahead of us.

About 30 miles from the inlet we spot a weedline with fish jumping on both sides. Picked up 10 peanuts and one nice gaffer on a bass assassin before we headed in. Not a bad day!

According to NOAA, they're talking about sandbar sharks. Only thing I've seen caught lately are 4-7' blacktips and spinners. They're all over the place at the north and south ends of carolina beach. My ass definitely won't be going in the water.

Quote :
"NOAA PROPOSES STRINGENT LIMITS TO SANDBAR SHARK FISHING
NOAA Fisheries Service is proposing that commercial and recreational fishing for
sandbar sharks be significantly reduced and limited to only those commercial vessels
that take part in a shark research program. This proposal is open to public comment.
“Because sandbar sharks as well as dusky sharks have been severely depleted,

we must take strong measures to stop overfishing and allow these species to rebuild,”
said Dr. William T. Hogarth, director of NOAA Fisheries Service. “Even with these
measures, it will take a long time to rebuild the population of these sharks because of
their unique biology.”

Sandbar and dusky sharks, like other shark species, mature late, grow slowly
and produce relatively few young. This makes them particularly vulnerable to
overexploitation. NOAA banned the fishing of dusky sharks in 2000, after stock
assessments showed severe depletion.

There are approximately 529 commercial fishing permits for shark fishing in the
Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. Sandbar sharks, because of their large
fins, are the most valuable species among the large coastal sharks. The fins are
considered a delicacy and are a main ingredient in ethnic food dishes such as shark fin
soup.

The proposed amendment to the Consolidated Highly Migratory Species Fishery
Management Plan would reduce the quota for sandbar sharks by 80 percent as part of
the rebuilding plan. The measures would help NOAA Fisheries meet the Congressional
mandate of the newly reauthorized Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and
Management Act to end all overfishing.

NOAA Fisheries would also establish a shark research fishery of between five
and 10 vessels that could land sandbar and other sharks. The vessels would have
observers on board and meet other criteria to be part of the program. The research
would be designed to gain more information about the status, mobility, migration,
habitat, ecology, and age and growth characteristics of sandbar sharks.

Other measures in the proposed amendment are the closing of some areas to
shark fishing as recommended by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council;
establishing a limit per trip on the amount of other large coastal sharks a fishermen can
keep; requiring that fins be attached to any shark that is commercially landed; and
reducing the shark species that recreational fishermen can keep.

During the months of August and September, NOAA Fisheries Service will hold
several hearings along the Atlantic Coast and Gulf of Mexico to gather public comments
on the proposed amendment."

Me and Jeepin4x4 caught our limit of Mahi's on Saturday. We had a chance at a big bull but we had too light of tackle...it had to be 40+.

I hear that. I'd heard that it had slowed down a lot with the heat.

I'll be going out of Wrightsville for King/Cobia/AJ and some bottom fishing. Anyone ever been offshore out of there much? I have charts and some places to go, but advice and places to go are always nice.

Nice work on the Mahi's. I'm gonna try and run on some other peoples boats this week and then I'm taking time off because summer fishing just isn't doing it for me. I'm ready for some fall weather and some schoolie tunas.

Left the dock around 5:30 after watching some lightning off in the distance. Headed right for the 650 in an attempt to drum up some Tunas. Lots of marks, whales, etc but no bites early. Around 9, the short rigger (Tuna Dart) goes screaming and we have our eye hooked. Our good buddy Mike gives the fish one hell of fight but he spits the hooks about 30 foot from the boat. Too bad,

The wind died and the entire ocean look void of life and was creepy flat, so we decided to re-calibrate the auto pilot and mess around the kite for the afternoon. It was lose-lose as we failed to fix the AP and then I snapped the tail off the kite. (For anyone who uses the Parafoil from Kitty Hawk Kites, have you tried trimming the tail? It sure is long!)

Ran towards The Point and found some scattered weeds and a pod of mini-mahis, but nothing worth wild. Continued to run and gun till we found a nice school of 6-8# Fish and Picked off about 11 before they got spooked and a storm rolled through so we called it a day.

We caught a lot of rain yesterday. The water looks plain gross offshore, the NE blow we have had for the past couple of weeks really screwed things up.
