"speaking of off-roading, i was talking to this dude the other day who said he and some buddies always hit up this trail off six forks just north of the upper barton boat launch. i drove by it today and there is definitely a trail head on both sides of the street that has recent activity on it. the guy said that very few people go out there and there has never been an issue. he said there are some tough parts that require winching unless the truck is fully locked but there are paths that go around the tough parts. he also said there is a mixture of mud holes just to play in and rock hills that actually require skill. i figured one of y'all would check it out. maybe optmusprimer could sneak up there one day since he ain't far. i ain't taking my shit off-road.

i just looked at it on google maps and there is definitely a trail. i think the part that guy was talking about is on the left if your northbound six forks. that trail goes down into the woods a bit to the lake. the right side doesn't go very far.

http://tinyurl.com/2s7ww4"

yeah if you are northbound (toward 98) there is a powerline trail there. i went on the eastward side about a month ago, its basically flat BUT leads to what would be a nice little fishing spot if there was more water in the lake. i met a guy who lives up there in duxford who says during the summer the neighborhood guys beach there boats there and walk back and forth to their houses.

havent been to the western side yet

I don't really know much about the whole riding around in the woods thing, but those last few pics look pretty damn cool! It appears to be a lot more purposeful than rednecks flying through mud puddles?

yeah, this is definitely a whole other level from rednecks driving through mud. mud sucks. comparing mud to rockcrawling is like auto-x to track days.

^^Do you do this? I thought you were in the EVO club with Gloveboy.

^Yeah, that's awesome. So I guess you can do that with like a Blazer or bigger truck or anything? You have to have a Jeep or a steel pipe thing?

I am...Evo is a fuckin' killer performance platform.

I've had a 240 rwhp Miata, and an S2000 that prob made about 360-370 at the crank.

had a few bikes, including a YZF-600 and a GSX-R 750...and ridden the shit out of my dad's Valkyrie and Goldwing.

had a Jeep...wheeled it some (not like this--it was just a stock YJ with a small shackle lift and 31" ATs)

but while I'm a backroad ripper (sports car or sportbike) at heart, I like offroading, too...and for that matter, even a little drag racing never hurt anyone. In short, I pretty much like it all.

Evo's actually for sale...planning on picking up another 4x4 (get back into the sports car game when I get back to NC, maybe after my first deployment. prob another Evo or an Elise, or maybe a comparatively cheap, purpose-built little track monster like a Miata or something).

those last 2 are me wheeling my friend Steve's FJ-40 somewhere NE of Wichita over the summer. We crawled some rocks there, too, but he has all of the rock pictures, and hasn't sent them to me (i think he's still in Iraq).

anyway, i won't say i've never played in the mud, and i won't say i didn't enjoy it when i did...but it takes a lot less skill than crawling rocks or other stuff does. It's also a fucking asspain to clean all of that mud out of stuff when you're done...and it'll do a number on bearings, etc...and you'll also end up getting water in your diffs and stuff, too. It just generally tends to fuck things up (although rockcrawling tends to snap drivetrain components and beat the hell out of body panels, so take your pick. At least you can overbuild a lot of that shit preventatively.)

ahhh haha

"jeep lights"

it also has a chrysler engine, rear end, and trans (727).

in his defense, he bought it that way...and he also uses the lights pretty regularly. in Kansas, they have this huge network of dirt roads. it's basically a grid that covers the state. you can pretty much go anywhere you want on dirt roads, but they're unlit. Most of them are nice and smooth (you can go 60-70 mph on them just like any other road). A few of them require a truck, and maybe even 4x4.

we drove on these roads for about 2 hours at night on the way home from wheelin', and for prob 20-30 minutes another night on the way home from the drag strip (we took his alky burning, 454 resto-modded '70 Chevelle out during the day, swapped it for the FJ in the afternoon, then drove that for the rest of the night).

At any rate, we had all of those lamps burning at night on those dirt roads...we were doing 70 mph in plenty of spots.

check out how low those power lines are along spots of those dirt roads. i think a tall guy could prob jump and grab them in some places.

i was talking about the tail lights. other manufacturers parts are cool. jeep parts on a cruiser are not.

i've always had mixed feelings on those. i think they look sharp, and they're functional...but they look out of place if the rest of the truck isn't slickly executed, and to me at least, they kinda stink of yo-boy and/or trailer trash truck-rice.

yeah, but they don't get broken easily, are highly visible, deal with shock/moisture better, and draw very little current. this sport is all about function.
