Overrated Quarterbacks Philip Rivers Rivers is a good quarterback, but I am not yet convinced he has reached the level of greatness his Pro Bowl berth would indicate. His performance faded after about the midway point of the 2006 season. In the first 10 games last year, Rivers' composite passer rating was 99.7. Over the last six games, the rating dropped to 77.6. It wasn't just his overall performance that suffered. I did a study late last year in an ESPN.com article that showed Rivers had more than a few issues when facing a blitz. In a five-game stretch from weeks 11-16, Rivers had a passer rating of 23.8 on plays when the Chargers' opponent blitzed. If Rivers had a long history of playing well, I might be able to overlook a late-season slump, but he has played well for only half of one season. I believe he needs to do more before being considered one of the league's great quarterbacks. Brett Favre Many of Favre's 2006 metrics were among the worst in the league. His 6.2 YPA put him in the company of Charlie Frye and Jason Campbell. His total of 18 bad decisions was tied for the fourth-most in the league, and his 62 combined interceptions and near interceptions was easily the most in the NFL, even surpassing the much-maligned Rex Grossman. Favre simply isn't anywhere near the quarterback he was even just three years ago. Others: Jon Kitna: Kitna gets a ton of credit for his strong leadership, but his 20 bad decisions ranked last in the league, and his 38 bad-decision points ranked next to last. Add in his nine lost fumbles last year and it is clear his turnovers and mistakes more than made up for his superb leadership skills. Trent Green: Green showed a lot of courage in coming back from a severe concussion last year, but his metrics after he returned were quite poor. His 6.5 YPA tied for 23rd in the league. His 60.4 success percentage was only slightly better than David Garrard's and was worse than Brad Johnson's. His 3.9 bad decision percentage was the 33rd-worst. The metrics indicate Green might not be the savior Dolphins fans are hoping he will be. Underrated Quarterbacks Marc Bulger I know that Bulger made the Pro Bowl last year, but I believe he still doesn't get his due as one of the NFL's best quarterbacks. His 7.5 YPA was the eighth-best in the league and his 92.9 passer rating was seventh-best. Bulger had the fourth-lowest bad-decision percentage and the fifth-lowest weighted bad-decision percentage. He also had the fifth-lowest interception/near interception percentage. That Bulger was able to post these numbers in a new offensive system, and without Mike Martz calling the plays, says a lot for his ability. J.P. Losman Losman might be the best deep ball quarterback in the NFL today. His 698 bomb passing yards were the second-most in the league. He also had the fifth-highest YPA at that depth level. It isn't just a high YPA level that makes Losman a great vertical passer. He also had zero bad decisions on his bomb passes. That total wasn't a statistical anomaly either, as Losman's 33 bomb pass throws were the fifth-most in that category. If Jason Peters can keep Losman's blindside protected this year as well as he did late last year, Losman should be able to do even better on long passes in 2007. Others: Chad Pennington: The reason Pennington qualifies for this list is that he is a much better vertical passer than people think. He ranked 15th and 12th in bomb and deep-pass YPA last year. Pennington's 9.8 YPA on deep out passes was also the seventh-highest figure in the league. These metrics prove Pennington is able to beat a defense even on the toughest passes a quarterback has to throw. Tony Romo: Romo was like Rivers in that his end-of-season performance tailed off, but his reputation seemed to take a much bigger hit than Rivers. This shouldn't have been the case, as Romo's end-of-season metrics were still among the best in the NFL. His 8.4 YPA was the highest in that category. Romo also had the second-highest success percentage and the highest SYPA rating. "

By week 12 or so last year, McCardell was too banged-up to get any separation, Malcom Floyd was out with an ankle injury and Eric Parker was slowing down with knee and neck injuries. All Rivers had to work with was Vincent Jackson, who is big enough and fast enough to get open deep but not quick enough to get separation on the underneath stuff. He also was too inexperienced to recognize a corner blitz and go for a hot route. So teams were blitzing, knowing full well that they could single-cover the recievers and put a linebacker/safety on Gates.

Craig Davis will be a welcome addition to the offense. He has sure hands and he is speedy enough to get separation quickly. The addition of Norv calling the shots will help as well, since he knows all about busting up blitzes. As usual, Rivers needs to work on his velocity and his accuracy on the deep ball, but he is as quick at reading defenses as anyone, and his decision-making is up there with anyone except maybe Manning and Brady. He should be a pro-bowler again this year if he can beat out Palmer or Brady and lead the team to 12+ victories.

Chargers quarterback hopes for continued success under new coach

SAN DIEGO - After becoming coach of the San Diego Chargers, Norv Turner didn't have to dig through the film vault to review Philip Rivers' performances.

He saw one of them in person.

"Unfortunately, I was there the day they really let it go, up in San Francisco where he started throwing it," said Turner, who as the 49ers' offensive coordinator saw Rivers throw for 334 yards and two touchdowns last season.

The game that stands out to superstar running back LaDainian Tomlinson was the previous week, when Rivers outdueled Ben Roethlisberger and helped the Chargers rally at home to beat Pittsburgh. Turner's predecessor, Marty Schottenheimer, finally unshackled Rivers -- he was 24-of-37 for 242 yards and two TDs -- a week after a bout with conservative "Martyball" cost the Chargers a victory at Baltimore.

"It was just the simple fact that we couldn't run the ball and he had to win the game for us, and he did," said Tomlinson, the reigning NFL MVP and rushing champion.

Center Nick Hardwick thinks back to Rivers' 337-yard, three-TD performance at Cincinnati in early November, when the Chargers rallied from a 28-7 halftime deficit to win 49-41.

After the Chargers scored on their first drive of the second half, "He's yelling, 'Y'all don't think we're out of this' to the Bengals," Hardwick said, mimicking Rivers' Southern drawl. "When he said that, I said, 'Shoot, I guess we ain't out of this. Right on.' "

Once Schottenheimer took off the training wheels, Rivers didn't waste any time burning rubber as the replacement for the departed Drew Brees.

To think, the Chargers had been so conservative with Rivers that he threw only 11 passes in his first start.

"I look back on those weeks, Pittsburgh, at Cincinnati, Denver, that whole stretch there where we're throwing it all over the place, coming from behind," said Rivers, who sat behind Brees for two seasons after being acquired for Eli Manning on draft day in 2004.

As good as Rivers was in being voted to the Pro Bowl in his first season as starter -- he didn't play because of a foot injury -- the Chargers expect a more polished performance this year.

The big passing days stood out when Turner watched the films from last season. That's when the Chargers were an NFL-best 14-2 and scored a league-high 492 points before flaming out in their playoff opener.

"He's going to have a lot of games like that because he's so smart, he sees the field -- he's got as good a vision as any guy I've been around -- he's extremely, extremely accurate," Turner said. "And he's got a good supporting cast."

Although he was 58-82-1 in previous head coaching stops at Washington and Oakland, Turner was acclaimed as an offensive coordinator, especially with Dallas in the early 1990s. A quarterback at Oregon in the early 1970s, his tutelage is expected to help further Rivers' development.

"It's funny -- we think a lot alike," Rivers said. "A lot of times he gets going on a play and I can finish it for him. We really have the same take and thoughts on the game and the quarterback position. That's a big positive because he's going to be calling the plays and I need to know what he's thinking."

As the Chargers try to rebound from their playoff loss to New England, Rivers is looking forward to a fast start and Turner's creativity.

"Week One we ought to be ready to roll, to cut it loose and not feel like we're in Week One," Rivers said. "Feel like we're in Week 18, I guess, coming right off the New England game, but with some more. I just think we have the ability to do that, and we have the right guys, smart guys."

It is that trait that seems to guarantee much more emphatically than any statistic that Rivers is unlikely to endure a sophomore slump. There is also the fact that after an offseason spent mostly rehabbing a sprained foot (he was not 100 percent until June) Rivers is having an excellent August. He completed nine of his 13 passes for 82 yards Saturday at St. Louis and has yet to throw an interception or even a bad pass this preseason. As was the case most of 2006, his incompletions so far this offseason were in the right places – either catchable or purposely out of reach. He was all but perfect in the preseason opener, his only incompletions in seven passes being a throw to Buster Davis on the sideline that Davis was bobbling as he went out of bounds and a strike that bounced off Malcom Floyd's chest. And so it is that Rivers has gone from obsessed over to taken for granted, a result not only of how well last season went but a sign of how well he is playing now. Last summer, it was all Rivers all the time in coverage of the Chargers. Now, he's just here. “The whole thing is different,” Rivers said. “Last year in the preseason I was trying to find out for sure that I could be the guy. I feel a lot more comfortable.” Still, he wrote in his notebook yesterday a couple of things he wants to work on – having to do with taking more available checkdowns in certain situations and staying firm in the pocket. He spoke of mistakes that go unnoticed by the masses. He wants the first quarter to be as good as the fourth. He wants that five-game lull to never be repeated. “There are a lot of things I can get better on,” he said. “There are sporadic plays. Maybe they aren't noticed in that they don't cause negative outcomes, which is OK, because it doesn't kill you. But they could hurt you down the road. “You watch it on tape and say that was the easiest play. It's the four or five plays a game that nobody notices, but it might have been the completion that could have gotten us a first down and we lose by three, and you say, 'Man that could have been big.' ” With that, he started going on about a pass he blew in practice an hour earlier, pantomiming what he did wrong, still struggling to believe he had messed up. “It's OK,” he said. “You move on, snap the ball, nobody remembers. But it happened, and you have to fix it.”"
