I have a Taurus 24/7 Pro 9mm.

Its a great gun. To me, it feels better in my hand than a glock. Its not as slim as a glock, but I like it better than the glocks I have shot.

This is the one i have:

So on the topic of the AR-15/Rifles, I am looking at a Del-Ton kit, and buying a stripped lower from Gunbroker or something.

It looks like with the options I want, and the sights, itll be around $900 total for the build, does that seem reasonable?

I was going to go cheap and go with the regular A2 upper with the built in sight and the standard A2 front sight, but I cant bring myself to do that knowing that I will probably want to put a scope on it in the future and end up changing out all the parts anyway.

The parts kit from Del-Ton, including the detachable front and rear sights and shipping is $700 bucks. It looks like I can get the stripped lower for about $200 from gunbroker (and my gun guy will do $15 FFL transfers).

Any thoughts?

Should I be able to do this cheaper?

whoever said you don't need a permit to buy a handgun from an individual needs to read up on NC Laws. Whenever you purchase a handgun in NC (no matter from whom) you must have a CCW (CCP, CCH, whatever NC calls it now) or a purchase permit. The purchase permit is to be retained by the seller.

have fun reading... it's in there

quick glance: class II misdemeanor is what I saw, but I didn't read it thoroughly

(it says for a violation of the handgun permit law, so I'm assuming that covers the seller not having the purchase permit)

Gun show @ fairgrounds this weekend.

Gun shows can sell to people not already possessing a permit, but it falls under this instant background check thing.

Quote :
"Attendees should be aware of the "Permanent Provisions of the Brady Law" which governs the sale of ALL firearms by Licensed Dealers after November 30, 1998.

This requires a background check through the new National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) program OR presentation of a permit that qualifies as an alternative to the NICS background check. "

Someone who knows what they're talking about: will you please give me a rundown of what I need to buy a gun at this show? The information I've already read from this thread seems not entirely accurate. There are two separate matters; buying a gun and possessing a gun. Gun shows make it plenty easy to buy them as long as you don't have a record.

But really... somebody please tell me what the deal is.

Let's get this straightened out and in the clear before someone gets themselves in trouble -

*In North Carolina a Pistol Purchase Permit OR a Concealed Carry Permit is REQUIRED to transfer any handgun - whether you are buying it from a dealer, an individual in a private sale, or it is being given to you as a gift. The Pistol Permit or Concealed Carry Permit is used in lieu of a NICS check. It can still be run, but legally, the permit qualifies as your background check.

*All buyers of long guns(rifles and shotguns) purchased FROM A DEALER(FFL-holder) are subject to a NICS (FBI background) check, unless you possess a valid NC Concealed Carry Permit OR you use a Pistol Permit to buy it. (If you do this with a Pistol Purchase Permit, dealers will likely run you anyway to double check, because that is very odd. Using a CCW permit in lieu of NICS is fairly common.)

*Long guns purchased in a private, face-to-face sale between NC residents does NOT require a NICS check. Note "private sale" (seller is not an FFL-holder) and "NC residents". All gun sales across state boundaries require a licensed dealer and therefore, a NICS check.

Those are the rules, no if, and or but's. You can go to prison for violating these rules if you are caught. When in doubt, look it up in the regs. The link was even posted above.

DO NOT GET YOURSELF IN TROUBLE

So I CAN just show up at the show and buy a rifle while there. Right? They'll do the instant background check, of course.

And basically, I need to take a class if I want a handgun.

Question: does one need to take any precautions regarding knives or swords? I mean, normally I wouldn't even bother asking, but if say, someone were to just willy-nilly get a 3 ft long sharp as fuck and can decapitate someone kind of katana... would there be any legal items of concerns for possession of this?

No, you do not need to take a class to buy a handgun. You need to go get a permit in your county. $5 and a background check.

and as far as the sword goes, just dont carry it under your coat into a mall or places like that.

you can't legally carry any fixed blade knife, and you can only carry smallish folding pocket knives (though if I recall the law doesn't state exactly how big you can carry, it just says 'a reasonable size' or 'a pocket knife', something like that)

keep it in your trunk while you're driving and have a reason for having it (going to pawn it, going to a renfaire, whatever) and you should be ok

^ you can legally carry a fixed blade knife as long as it is "open carry"

and as far as size, its 6 inches overall or 3 inch blade iirc.

I probably could, if you told me exactly what to look for. I'm going at 9 on Saturday.

If you end up going, go to the website and you can print off a $1-off coupon. I think that makes it $7 to get in

Please tell me how to do this. I am interested to know how I can get a handgun without taking a class.

To reiterate what's been said so far, the options are:

*Pistol Purchase Permit
*Concealed Carry Permit

Are you referring to the first one? How does one get that?

To obtain the pistol purchase permit from Wake County it took all of 10 minutes to fill out the forms once I found a spot to park and walk into the sheriff's dept. It's a SMALL office on the second floor, maybe 10 people could get crammed in there max. Bring cash and NC driver's license, it makes everything faster and easier and you can request a receipt if you want. You pay $5 per permit (1 permit per pistol/revolver), and can request from 1 up to the limit of 5 permits at a time. Minimum wait for permit pickup was 5 business days and thats how long it took for mine, but this was about 2 or 3 months ago before this Obama shit. Just gotta call to see when it's ready, don't count on them calling you. Last I heard a week ago it was backlogged for weeks if not months for just the permit, and I thought I read somewhere here the line was circling inside the building. When the permit is ready go to the same office and just pick it up.

CHP, CCP, CCH, are all the same thing just different abbreviations and PC terms, it's a permit to legally conceal a handgun. It's a whole different ball game than purchase permits. A lot more involved with an 8 hour class, written (easy) exam, marksmanship exam, total costs of roughly $200 to 300 just to obtain the permit and you'd best be prepared for more intensive encounters on your traffic stops and in general when dealing with LEO's. The permit sticks to your auto file through the DMV so when you get pulled for anything, they automatically know you most likely have a gun on you. You gotta get fingerprinted in your county of residence no matter what, I've heard of a few that went outside their county because of long wait times (Mecklenburg/Wake/etc), actually got the permit, then had it revoked when someone noticed things didnt add up. Right now it's close to a 2 month wait just for the fingerprinting appt in Mecklenburg, with another 3 months minimum for background clearance/check. Not fun at all. Wake might be a little less time. Smaller counties probably a few weeks to a few months.

^^Your information is good, but it is not exactly correct.

Quote :
"It's a whole different ball game than purchase permits."
WRONG

A CCP, CHP, CCH permit in NC also acts as a perminate and unlimited Pistol Purchase Permit. If you have a Conceal Permit, you DO NOT NEED a pistol purchase permit to buy a gun. This is one perk of having your conceal carry permit. Instead of giving your PPP, you will present the seller with your CCP and he will copy your info. No more $5 per pistol, no more 5 day waiting period when you have a CCP.

So I'm guessing that whatever it is, you probably shouldn't walk around with it if you don't have the Conceal Permit.

You can walk around with a pistol in most places as long as its in plain view.

I do it all the time hunting.
Some municipalities outlawed open carry in town limits as well as most gov property and any private land posting no weapons.
Of course, there's always the chance that someone will freak out and you could get charged with being armed and terrorizing the public whether you're otherwise legal or not.

Generally not advisable to do it public, for the aforementioned reason of people freaking out. Concealed is a much safer option for you because if they don't know you have it, they can't be irrational and freak out.

Generally speaking, open carry is not recommended, considering that it is not *that* difficult to get a concealed carry permit, but it's not going to cause mass panic 99.9% of the time. Probably some odd looks, and maybe get asked to leave someone's store once in a blue moon. It's harder than a purchase permit since there's a practical and written test involved, but anyone legally eligible, with about $150, and a little time and dedication can learn what it takes to get one. They just make you jump through more hoops and ensure that you understand the ramifications of what you're choosing to do.

I personally think anyone that's willing to practice with their weapon and understand the laws should spend the time and money to get one. Not every Joe out there should be toting a gun, but any intelligent, responsible person that is capable of doing so should take responsibility for their own safety and defense. The statistics show that when crooks know folks are armed, they get wise and stay away from them.

yeah, i'd like to get mine, but not being able to carry on base makes it pretty much worthless for me.

not that i feel the need to carry on base...but that means i could only carry if i knew i wouldn't be stepping foot on base while i was out, and that is such a small % of the time that it isn't really worth the trouble.

drunktyper I was refering more about the legality issues and seriousness of a concealed hangun permit than just a pistol purchase permit, but yes you are correct. However, for his situation I was explaining the purchase permit would be the easier, cheaper, and quicker option for the time being until the whole obama took our jerbs guns thing dies down.

Most people don't practice regularly with their carry ammo, for the reasons you specified. $1 / rd for quality self defense ammo isn't out of the question.

FWIW, I've heard a point of view recommending that you carry the same brand of ammunition as your local PD. The logic being that if you're in a self-defense shooting and wind up in court over it, the prosecutor can't go after you (well they can, but the angle is weak) for carrying the exact same ammunition as the local LEOs.

The Glock XD debate is very very old, and continuous.
You will have to shoot both and decide what you like best. They are both great guns, but people are in a never ending battle over which is better.

Lawman's off of tryon sells Speer Gold Dots JHP for $24/50. I'de much rather shoot them then $20/50 remans.
