well since this was for some reason bumped, I recently heard a local bar band played Susanne, and it blew my mind, and I lamented for what weezer has turned into since

LMAO

I'm a Weezer fan and didn't even realize they had released another album after Ratitude. WTF, why are they pumping them out so fast? Maybe they should give it a bit more time so all the tracks are good instead of just 2-3

I can't even fathom what sort of event you were at that could've caused you to go "you know what I should play? Battlescars" as a DJ.

^^^You know they have put out 2 albums since Raditude right? Hurley and Death to False Metal. I haven't listened to either though. I'm afraid that I wouldn't be a Weezer fan anymore if I did.

I swore I was done discussing Weezer but this topic just HAD to be bumped.

Death to False Metal is total throwaway; it's not new songs, but rather unreleased songs mainly from Make Believe era, but a couple from the 90's ("Trampoline" is pretty good).

Hurley I actually like. It's not a great album, it's not an album that a Blue and Pinkerton era Weezer would be pleased to associate itself with, but it's a pretty fun album. There are some songs on there that I still will listen to every now and then.

The main reason I replied here, however, is because of this FUCKING HILARIOUS thread posted on the weezer.com forums: http://weezer.com/forum/topics/heartsongs-help?xg_source=activity

Rivers posts:

Quote :
"what is it about "heartsongs" that people don't like?

trying to learn........."

Later on in the thread Pat Wilson posts:

Quote :
"It sounds like it was scripted and not played."

I LOL'd. He has been trolling Rivers indirectly for some time on the All Things Weezer forums.

It would appear that Pat Wilson just leaked these full band demos of "You Won't Get With Me Tonight" and "I Swear It's True" to the web, and given the rapid rate at which they are being taken down and threads deleted, it would seem someone isn't happy about it.

i didnt read any of this thread but I saw that Weezer was going to headline the DC 101 Chili-Cook Off. I thought that caliber of booking was reserved for one-hit wonder bands from the mid-90's? Seemed weird to me.

Weezer played state fair shows last year. That's all you need to know.

I guess some of those early Beach Boys comparisons turned out to be accurate after all.

I think it's a great tune and if it had a different voice and the artist was labeled as "Wavves" or "Surfer Blood" folks would be all over it. Unfortunately Weezer has probably tarnished their name so much to the point where even if this album turns out to be decent it won't be given a chance.

I like this song a lot and Robin Hilton on All Songs Considered was gushing over it and said it might be his favorite album of the year so far so I'm a little more curious to check it out than I usually am. I think my tastes probably skew a little more pop than most people on here, though.

The songs I've heard from this new record (admittedly only three) aren't as bad as recent Weezer stuff, but they still don't even stand up to things like "Slave" IMO.

I LOL'd at the Kylie Minogue "Can't Get You Out of My Head" guitar break on "Foolish Father" though.

I've really only heard Back to the Shack and Cleopatra but I would agree. Out of the two, I like Cleopatra a good bit better. The sound is somewhere between Pinkerton and Green and it was fairly catchy. I'm not getting my hopes up though; just about every Weezer album is preceded by the release of admittedly catchy songs regardless of the quality of the album as a whole.

I've heard 4 songs so far and Back to the Shack was by far the worst. The other three were actually somewhat enjoyable to listen to (Foolish Father very much so).

Back to the Shack is terrible. I didn't like Cleopatra, but part of that was just a general letdown because BearWhoDrive got super stoked on it and I thought it might be really excellent and it wasn't. Foolish Father is fine, but I can't say I'm excited to hear it more.

not that it matters (really at all), but I honestly think the opposite is true. I think there are some Weezer fans that are so invested in the band, that anything they put out that is slightly better than dog shit gets a lot of praise. these are the people claiming that The Red Album is good music.
I was one of these people at one point (I tried REALLY hard to convince myself that Make Believe was a good record). I was about as big a Weezer fan as you can get in the early 2000s (the buying Australian Good Life single imports and Weezines on ebay type), but it's over. they have nothing left to give (except maybe slightly better than average live shows, but I wouldn't know as I haven't seen them in 11 years).

Eh, that's not really how it seems to me. I think most people except for the die hard fans have given up on Weezer and will dismiss anything they put out. I've hated most of what the band has done for the last 10+ years (I initially liked Make Believe because I bought into the hype to the point where I was ready to like anything that didn't sound like Maladroit, but my feelings changed very quickly), but I do think they have put out some pretty good songs along the way (there are usually a couple of gems surrounded by an album of shit).

I've heard full songs or excerpts from almost this entire album now and I honestly believe it could turn out to be a legitimately good album. My expectations are set at it being their third best album, which isn't necessarily saying much, but what I've heard (other than Back to the Shack which I absolutely hate) sounds really good. If this was 10 years ago I would say that was just me being overly optimistic and giving the band a free pass because of what they did in the 90's and how much I adore Blue and Pinkerton, but my Weezer fandom died long ago and I think I've approached this one with a fairly objective ear. I don't think Rivers Cuomo ever really lost the ability to write good songs; I'm just not really sure he's tried to make an actual Weezer album since Green. He's used Weezer for more than a decade to do the kind of bullshit that most artists would do as side projects.

That said, I've been known to like some things that a lot of people consider to be utter shit (The Gaslight Anthem perhaps as a prime example), so I'm certainly prepared to be off base on this one. I also really enjoy a good half of the Red Album (the other half is some of the worst shit I've ever heard), so maybe I'm not a good judge of this stuff.

There are some samples from a lot of the songs in some videos on the band's YouTube page.

"Da Vinci" (starts at 0:41) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgtJeqAqrTk
"I've Had it Up to Here" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY2MsWJ8K6c

"Go Away" (starts at 0:20) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR-JKeRHbY8 (lol Best Coast)

Not Weezer, but Tony Molina's album is what the Blue Album might have sounded like if it were recorded on Bob Pollard's 4-track with some Bandwagonesque thrown in for good measure.

This is my first time hearing that Tony Molina 'album'. It has a ton of great individual parts but just feels unfinished overall just due to the length.

Additionally, it sounds nearly EXACTLY like what JEFF the Brotherhood has been doing for the past 5 years or so. (Which is not a knock or bad at all, just mentioning that).

Musically, "The British Are Coming" is enjoyable (aside from the Journey break), but what in the everliving fuck is up with the lyrics?

Reminds me of certain Beach Boys songs, like "Johnny Carson" and "Busy Doin' Nothin'" where the lyrics are like

Yeah, I remember Rivers posting something about how he was trying to decide whether he should make the lyrics more about himself or more straightforward literally about the American Revolution. The answer was obvious just as it was equally obvious that he would make the wrong decision, and he did.

So I've finally heard a few more songs and I'm a bit more excited. I know everyone else has probably heard the whole thing but oh well. Back to the Shack was OK. About on par with something like Pork and Beans for me: a decent and catchy song but nothing that pumps me up to buy an album. I thought Cleopatra was very good and sounded like some B side between Pinkerton and Green. Then British was pretty meh for me.

But now, Da Vinci and Lonely Girl are both solid songs. If those are better indicators of the album as a whole then I will probably legitimately enjoy this record.

Go Away sounds like it would fit in with the Black Hole stuff.

Foolish Father was co-written with Patrick Stickles.
