brick exterior or siding?
11/30/2006 10:56:12 AM
vinyl siding. i'm done laying bricks/blocks/whatever
11/30/2006 11:18:56 AM
that's only cause you guys did it the hard way. or so it looks from the pictures.would have been a lot easier to set the corners and then string a line for everything in between.
11/30/2006 12:12:18 PM
Got a figure on total cost yet? I'll def. be doing something like this at my house in the next year and am curious how much just materials are going to cost me since I too will be doing most of the labor myself.Looks good though, keep it up.
11/30/2006 12:49:54 PM
^^ we did do that, that's how we kept it square
11/30/2006 2:24:06 PM
roof and siding up yet?
12/10/2006 10:37:37 AM
nope, havent worked on it in two weeks, been too busy
12/10/2006 11:37:07 AM
we're finally back at it today. if anyone wants to stop by feel free. we're ab to put up the 8ft. garage door
12/17/2006 2:32:27 PM
so we got both garage doors up, about half of the roof bracing done, 2/3 of the eaves done and none of the pearling. the rest will hopefully get done tomorrow, then we'll have the first inspection.pix:
12/17/2006 9:56:36 PM
how hard is assembling garage doors? I've never seen it done
12/17/2006 10:12:07 PM
about as hard as putting together particleboard furniture, just on a bigger scale
12/17/2006 10:32:34 PM
so ladies and gents we have the rest of the pearling to do and we'll be done w/ the framing!!!!!!!!!!!!!that's so awesome. the doors and supports are hung. the roof bracing is done. the back wall pearling is done. the eaves are done. when we actually get time to work on stuff so much gets done.
12/19/2006 12:24:10 AM
wtf is pearlingis that like a dirty sanchez
12/19/2006 12:26:00 AM
it's the boards that go between the studs mang. u shoulda come over today you biatch
12/19/2006 12:33:15 AM
This looks like it'll be sweet when it's done. You can stop leaving all your cars out on the front lawn.Is a lift going in this garage or will it just be a nice, clean, dry place to work on your assorted vehicles?
12/19/2006 12:36:33 AM
if i end up w/ a scissor lift it'll have a lift. if not it'll be a sweet place to work on shit. and the welder will actually be able to wheel around and reach stuff. i can't wait to finish it.

bud ice spelling i'm jk thanks for the correction i had no idea how is was spelled
12/19/2006 10:38:17 AM
so we got a lot done last night like i said. here are some pix. the back wall and the purlin
12/19/2006 11:51:23 AM
It would have been better to put your blocking at the OSB seam higher on the wall
12/19/2006 1:43:51 PM
^uh, no...
12/19/2006 1:54:10 PM
not really. it's where it should be.
12/19/2006 2:17:21 PM
Blocking is only required on walls over 8'. And it location only has to be at a point so there is 8' or less from it to top and bottom of the wall. Placing it higher, both would have met code and would support the OSB at horizontal seams. That was my point
12/19/2006 2:43:02 PM
that wall IS over 8 ft. it's better served where it is.
12/19/2006 2:56:03 PM
it's a 10 foot wall. the purlin is at 5 ft.[Edited on December 19, 2006 at 3:02 PM. Reason : ]
12/19/2006 3:02:34 PM
I know its over 8', its obvious by the sheathing. It would be better served doing double duty.I have been in construction and have been framing various structures almost as long as either of you have been alive. And to be clear I wasn't trying to call you, I was making an observation.
12/19/2006 3:14:21 PM
yeah, you're right. the hundreds/thousands of houses i've worked on/in always have the blocking near the top of structural walls, just so you can tie the edge of a sheet in...
12/19/2006 4:26:35 PM
One thing I noticed is there's no airflow in thur. Might be worth the extra hour or two before you start drywalling to put in a louver up near the roofline and block in space for an interior fan.I know in the winter when your painting or doing a lot of welding/cutting in a nice warm garage, nothing sucks worse than having to open the doors to let fresh air in/out.Place looks damn good though, makes me want to buy a house and build my own like you wouldn't believe!
12/19/2006 4:40:34 PM
i can't tell in the pics, but i would assume they did a ridge vent, being common practice these days. they draw pretty well. i agree an exhaust fan or two would be a bonus though. my dad has a pair of small ones in the walls of his painting/woodworking room at their house and they'll draw the fumes out in a hurry.[Edited on December 19, 2006 at 4:56 PM. ^^yea even a cheap ass dual 8" plastic window fan for dorms will do the job like a champ.^and ^^Having worked now with a couple of builders on houses, claiming 20+ years of experience doesn't have a damn thing to do with good practice knowledge. I've seen so much fucked up shit builders have pulled in the last 6 months it boggles my mind.Sorry, had to put that in, shit pisses me off daily

we're doing gable vents, not ridge vents. i'm not sure if 69 has plans for fans. i'm sure he'll chime in later[Edited on December 19, 2006 at 5:31 PM. Reason : pun intended bwhahahahaha ]
