ok, so what do we do when one of our domain names are held hostage by progress-systems? i have another domain name, that wolfmarsh setup through enom, but after talking to them, they say there's nothing they can do and that he has to release it to me...but he's fallen off the face of the earth. that's the only domain name i didn't register myself, and now i definitely regret it.[Edited on December 15, 2005 at 10:42 PM. Don't you have DNS options in the C-Panel?
12/15/2005 10:44:11 PM
progress-systems used ensim, and no.
12/15/2005 10:52:06 PM
Well, I know that Cpanel gives you the option to change DNS settings depending on the admin. Check your online billing portal to see if there's a way to unlock your domain.
12/15/2005 10:53:17 PM
SWEET!it's in the billing system. you can unlock the domain to be transferred and/or change the dns info from there.thanks!
12/15/2005 10:58:32 PM
you're welcome.
12/15/2005 11:03:27 PM
^^^Sweet baby Jesus!!! Thank you so much.So once a domain is unlocked, can I just request my new registrar to take it over or does Progress still have to do something?
12/15/2005 11:19:53 PM
noOnce it is unlocked anyone can renew it, but you remain the owner, unless Progress is listed as the owner.
12/15/2005 11:20:33 PM
Do we think setting it to unlock in the billing system will take sometime for the changes to show up on whois as unlocked for example? I'm sorry I guess not sure how all of this works.
12/15/2005 11:27:35 PM
It will take time to propagate across global servers, but you can make changes immediately because it is unlocked in the primary registrar's database.

.... so are we all jsut crossing our fingers that no technical problems occur in the near future? A client/friend of mine was saying she couldn't connect to FTP last night using Dreamweaver. I haven't gotten a chance to check it myself, but if something goes wrong with the server it sounds like we're screwed.
12/16/2005 7:53:54 AM
I couldn't connect to the server last night on my first try. I got through on my second try though. I'm jumping ship ASAP.
12/16/2005 9:17:17 AM
i've had problems connecting with ftp latelyand phpmyadmin is slow as fuck
12/16/2005 9:50:06 AM
ftp has always been really slow to connect for me.
12/16/2005 10:05:59 AM
FTP has been very slow and has timed out several times for me today. My new host is having difficulty transfering the files over.
12/16/2005 10:13:01 AM
Wolfmarsh set up my account but I don't have the login information for them. support@.... isn't being answered. How can I get in contact with them to edit my account and shit?
12/16/2005 10:20:58 AM

Everytime I try to create a backup of my site and send it to my new host, the file becomes corrupted!!! The backup file is a .tar.gz file. I then download it to my PC and open it with WinRAR. I get the following error:srv002.progress-systems.com_genejockeys.com_site_2005_December_16_18_13.tar.gz: The archive is corruptI've tried copying all of the files individually, but then I get several files that won't transfer.Any suggestions?
12/16/2005 6:42:41 PM
^ do you have ssh access to your site?
12/16/2005 7:09:16 PM
I have been getting that since last year!I have never been able to make a backup... ever
12/16/2005 7:09:25 PM
^^ I have no idea if I do or how I would do it if I did.^ I have been making backups everynow and then, but I guess I should have been testing them before archiving.
12/16/2005 7:13:59 PM
my backups were always corrupt, I had to manually download each directory and check to make sure files were there. I still can't access about 400 images because apache took ownership.
12/16/2005 9:17:26 PM
^When I log in as the adminstrator, I still can't access many files and folders including email accounts of my users inorder to copy the folders. Is this normal?
12/16/2005 10:00:59 PM
no idea, gave up on a lot of it and decided to start over.
12/16/2005 10:05:43 PM
OK, I'm going for damage control here. At bare minumum, I just need to get my email transfered. The rest of my site is on my home PC. What are all of the files and folders I need to move my email? I have a folder /home/myusername/mail that contains 3 files: Drafts Sent Trash and 2 email folders that I created in squilmail. My question is, where is my inbox stored?
12/16/2005 10:16:03 PM
i just used firefox to copy the files from my imap acct to a personal folder on my computer, then transferred them to my new imap account on dreamhost.prpbably not the best way to do it, but it kept me from having to deal with the files directly
12/16/2005 10:33:10 PM
^^ i'll take a look at it if you PM me or catch me on AIM. I used to host a lot of shit on ensim and have transferred lots of sites from it.

If your domain is expired, hit the ? next to it in the billing system to get a whois and look to see who the registrar is. Mine went to enom.com. Send an email explaining you're the owner of the domain and want the lock removed and they'll for through a confirmation process and do it for you.

Ok...I am a current progress customer. I haven't had any problem with my service but it appears that from this thread, Wolfmarsh has gone MIA. My site is just a personal site, so service is not absolute, but I would good service. I have a bill due at the end of the year and it appears I should look elsewhere. Is this correct. I appreciate a summary.
12/18/2005 5:30:41 PM
if you have any problems with service or any questions, you are shit outta luck. I was able to set up my databases, add-on domains, and basically get 6 websites running in 3 days with the new host and two months later I haven't received help with the add-on domains through progress.[Edited on December 18, 2005 at 6:15 PM. Well...I am ok with everything now...but I dont want to give him $25 and the server be shut down for good a week later. I got burnt by hassell and I assume a majority of his business from tww is a result of that. That is my concern. If it stays as is...i am ok with it.

Here's the deal:I'm looking to start a semi-professional site to advertise what I'm hoping will turn into a photography side-venture. So I want something that's pretty reliable since I hope to make money from it. Something similar to Progress should've been fine for what I have in mind had customer service been more reliable. And while I start the new site, I'd probably move my existing personal site (currently on Progress) along with it. Anyone have any suggestions for a good, professional host? I want to balance speed, reliability and cost, which is to say I want the most I can get for the least amount of money I can get away with spending. And since everyone here is looking at alternatives, I figured this thread would be a better place to ask for a suggestion rather than starting my own.

How can I use the Progress' shared IP address to access my site? I changed my domains to point to my new host, but I want to log in one last time to check to see if I got any email to Progress during the transition.I tried http://207.44.160.88/~username/ with no sucess. Unfortunatly, when I log into Ensim to get email access, it directs me to my http://mydomain/squilmail/ which obviously does not work anymore.

I sent my cancellation email like a month ago...I was billed today...I'm filing it with my bank tomorrow to block all charges from Progress and if I don't hear anything from them I will file with the Better Business Bureau...I do not tolerate incorrect charges...ESPECIALLY when I have all of the "Do Not Renew" options selected AND have sent a cancellation.

well i paid with paypal and it's not set up as a subscription, so i don't think he can automatically charge mehowever, my only concern is that i don't want to end up with any negative credit repercussions from something this dumbi kind of feel like i'd just be refusing to pay a bill, which seems risky to me
