is there any way to display the weather of a non-us city in the sidebar?doesn't seem like it. it asks for a zip code in the US.that's pretty near-sighted of them.
8/31/2005 6:28:12 AM
Something also pissing me off about the sidebar and personalized homepage is that it will not recognize mutual funds...until that is fixed and they add tv listings, I'm sticking with My Yahoo

several Maps + Katrina mashups or changes. First, on the Maps home page Google has added a link to view new ariel photography of New Orleans - http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+Orleans&t=eWhen you're over NO, there is now a "Katrina" button that shows ariel images from Aug 31, and you can compare those to the original satellite images. here's a 3rd party one that does the same thing, but puts the images side by side - http://tinyurl.com/7eck5here is a good idea - http://www.katrinashelter.com/ - you can offer shelter for hurricane refugees by adding your house/shelter to the map. This would be much more useful, of course, if hurricane victims could get online.....here people can add and ask for information at a specific place in New Orleans using a map - http://www.scipionus.com/And Google is offering several Google Earth overlays for Katrina images and info - http://earth.google.com/katrina.html

Google is truly changing the universe. They have once again surpassed God with the latest release of Google Talk:version 1.0.0.70 betahttp://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Google_Talk/1124848055/1Amazing.
9/23/2005 12:04:31 AM
Google Talk is stupid.Absolutely no challenge to Yahoo! Messenger.
9/23/2005 12:07:25 AM
LOL Yahoo!Who uses that shit anyway? Shouldn't you be on MSN anyway, fanboy?By the way, did you not get a taste, just a hint, of sarcasm in my post?
9/23/2005 12:10:37 AM
fanboy?uhh sure
9/23/2005 12:36:54 AM
^^^^what's so great about the newest version? curious^^^everyone uses AIM, at least 99% of my friends do, and that's all i really care about just being able to IM those people when need be, until my friends switch over i really have no need to
9/23/2005 12:59:05 AM
^ haha I have absolutely no idea. The changelog was blank on FileForum. I just thought it was funny they would release such a dilute version like that, what with four fucking places in the version number.
9/23/2005 8:46:43 AM
considering the public release was 1.0.0.68I seriously doubt there are noticable changes

^ going further with that, it appears that this may be the start of "Google TV", which of course, nobody is sure exactly what that is. but that never stopped people from speculating!http://www.buygoogle.com/2005/09/era-of-couch-potato-is-so-over.htmlhttp://google.blognewschannel.com/index.php/archives/2005/09/26/google-hates-chris-er-loves-chris/also worth nothing that a couple days ago (or sometime recently), Google Video changed video players from the previous homebrew video player that had to be downloaded and installed to some kind of fully embedded Flash-hack. http://google.weblogsinc.com/entry/1234000620060520/also, others have been taking notice of the re-emergence/dissapperance of the Web Acceleratorhttp://www.buygoogle.com/2005/09/google-web-accelerator-risen-from-dead.htmlhttp://www.buygoogle.com/2005/09/gwa-is-back-update.htmlBuyGoogle seems to think that the GWA had too much work behind it and is part of a much bigger plan (possibly including Google TV) to be discontinued because of some bad press. Looks like after the initial deluge of bad PR for GWA, they're laying low and trying to figure out how to reintroduce it in a more favorable way.[Edited on September 27, 2005 at 9:24 AM. Reason : .]

so we all know that you can go to Google and type a flight number (like UAL 11) and get links to travelocity, expedia, and fboweb for real-time flight information. Now the fboweb.com link also includes a Google Maps mashup showing the flight location and information. cool.

^^ dunno - the only consistent news I keep hearing of it is from the guys at buygoogle.com. I actually don't use it myself, so I've not been paying much attention. and the NASA announcement has generated a lot of discussion and speculation:http://www.google.com/press/pressrel/google_nasa.htmlhttp://battellemedia.com/archives/001896.phphttp://www.buygoogle.com/2005/09/google-nasa-just-office-space.htmlhttp://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/09/28/GOOGLE.TMPhttp://tinyurl.com/ckdyxhttp://google.weblogsinc.com/entry/1234000707060998/also, we can only hope that a Google Calendar is coming soon, hopefully with tight integration into Gmail - http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050928-173506http://calendar.google.com/ redirects to google.com, and gcalendar.com is being held by a common Google domain holding company.[Edited on September 30, 2005 at 4:25 AM. "TechConnect" is an initiative in San Francisco that appears to be headed by the mayor to bring cheap/free wireless networking to the whole city. http://www.sfgov.org/site/tech_connect_page.asp?id=33899Google has submitted an offer to provide the service for free http://wireless.weblogsinc.com/entry/1234000100061360/That would be a hell of a start for rolling out municipal (wireless) internet services. If the government can push the burden off to a company like Google, then the tel-cos and the likes of Verizon will have a much harder time at blocking it in court than if the city was doing it (like Philadelphia, i think..., or somewhere in Colorado).

something potentially big to be announced this morning at 10:30 PThttp://wcdata.sun.com/webcast/archives/VIP-2166/Some kind of collaboration between Google and Sun. GoogleOffice? Java....ummmm.... maps.....i dunno - main thing of interest coming out of Sun would be OpenOffice I imagine, and Java I guess. Sun needs some help from the likes of Google though if they want to compete with MS in anything
10/4/2005 12:26:15 PM
well - the realmedia stream isn't working for me. Can anyone else watch it? (of course I have to make sure my time conversion is right.... I'm in germany, which is 6 hours ahead of EST, which is 3 hours ahead of PT.... so if it's 7:45pm in Germany, then it's 10:45AM in San Jose, right?)i dug up some more speculation though - http://google-blog.dirson.com/post.new/0285/http://blogs.pcworld.com/techlog/archives/000959.htmlSo within minutes/hours I guess we'll all know if it's true that Google has gone and AJAXed up OpenOffice and created a truly in-browser office suite, complete with seamless online storage and back up.

you can now personalize your "search page"pretty interesting and good looking. can now be a portal
10/4/2005 5:16:12 PM
yeah.... that was introduced in April and reported on page 4... then again on page 6, then again about 1/2 up this page. to tell you the truth, I haven't made good use of it - don't even use it actually. It's annoying that it doens't work well in FireFox - you can't drag the sections around and a couple other things don't fully work I think.
10/4/2005 5:29:12 PM
ummm...whoops...it seems to work well in firefox
10/4/2005 5:30:06 PM
So in your FireFox, can you click and drag the headers for each section and re-arrange the sections? If you don't know what I'm talking about , open IE then click the headers, and you can drag them around. It doesn't work on my FF at work in Windows, nor my FF here at home on my Mac, but it does work in Safari on my Mac.I think they need to make an option so that you can make your google.com/ page the portal if you want, and turn it on and off with your account, instead of making you use the google.com/ig/ URL. In your "account preferences" (another thing that's sorely lacking with the so-called "google account" is a nice, unified account preferences page) you should be able to say "make google.com home personalized" or something, so on any computer you can sign-in and have google.com personalized. I know, I know - "just click Personalized Home" and you can go there; that's not the point though. It still redirects to you a new URL, where it should use the regular URL so you don't have to update any bookmarks, search bars, home pages, etc.
10/4/2005 5:36:30 PM
works for me in FF too. on multiple computers
10/4/2005 5:38:31 PM
Unfortunately, I must resort to "My Yahoo!" because the Google personalized search page has no support for mutual funds, custom investment portfolios, or TV listings. Until then, I don't even bother with the personalized page as it takes longer to load for essentially no benefit to my searching experience.
10/4/2005 5:40:54 PM
yep, works fine in FF for me. dragging is fine.
10/4/2005 9:56:29 PM
draggin works fine for me too. when it first came out, it only showed the outline of the section, now it shows the entire section as you drag it. booya, i love google.[Edited on October 5, 2005 at 1:31 AM. Reason : more]
