What's a good range round for a 9mm? I need to get a box for my class this weekend and i don't know too much about handgun ammo.
1/14/2010 11:25:24 AM
^blazer, remington, pmc, hornaday, lawman... just depends on what you want to spend. I don't mind Winchester but a lot of people say it's dirty... and one gun I've used didn't like it at all....
1/14/2010 11:28:24 AM
does it matter in the range, hollow point or FMJ? If i'm gonna be carrying hollow point, should i go ahead and qualify with it?
1/14/2010 11:51:36 AM
It is a good idea to run a few 'self-defense rounds' through your gun to make sure that it likes that particular round with no failures. Otherwise, they're pretty expensive, so use the cheaper FMJ stuff at the range and save the JHP for when you might need it.
1/14/2010 11:53:34 AM
^^ha... no.. just get some cheap target ammo. no need for defense rounds to put holes in paper. and in all honesty, you really won't tell much of a difference between the defense and target rounds. I recommend shooting with target 90% of the time, carry defense rounds and then practice with defense rounds 10% of the time - again, you'll never really tell the difference and it's much cheaper. but you do need to put the defense rounds down the pipe to make sure the gun likes the brand/type. You can tell a little bit of a difference- especially if you are using a +p+ (which I wouldn't use- I just use +p)... you'll have more of a kick with those, but that is simply because they have more powder shoved in there (I can definitely feel the difference b/w range and personal defense 38sp)I don't know if blazer is even being made anymore (I heard that they changed the name of it), but federal and remington's range ammo works fine. I also don't mind winchester white box, but like it was previously mentioned, it is pretty dirty- but that is why they make bore snakes
1/14/2010 1:10:41 PM
For the range qualification, you could be shooting rocks through your pistol and you're gonna hit the target.I'm assuming you're talking about the Concealed Carry class....3yards, 5yards, and 7yard shots.
1/14/2010 1:14:08 PM
^yeah, but i planned on putting some more rounds in at the range after the test.Just picked some up, the selection was slim so i had to get PMC 115gr. FMJ

In the past, I have purchased bulk through georgia arms...if you guys are looking to get a small order together, let me know.I just ordered 1000 .40, 1000 9mm and 1000 45 acp.
1/14/2010 4:40:03 PM
i'd be willing to go in on some .380
1/14/2010 4:51:39 PM
how much to buy, say, 200rds of the 9mm?
1/14/2010 6:10:33 PM
^^ I too could use some .380
1/14/2010 11:51:15 PM
i probably have a friend who would want some too. if we get 4 people we can do 250 rds a piece. that'd be about right for me.
1/14/2010 11:56:31 PM
what we looking on price per person??
1/15/2010 12:02:25 AM
maybe drunk typer will let us know. i know .380 is ridiculous right now.from the website, it looks like about $350 for 1000 rds of FMJ, but it says they have a long backorder list on .380 ACP and several other popular calibers.[Edited on January 15, 2010 at 12:07 AM. Reason : fda]
1/15/2010 12:03:11 AM
i'm sure georgia arms will be at the dixie show this weekend. seems like last time it was around $120-125 for 500 rnds 9mm.
1/15/2010 12:07:11 AM
i paid $38 for 50 rounds when i bought my gun just so I could have some.
1/15/2010 12:07:18 AM
So if I'm just looking for a couple hundred rounds of 9mm to shoot at the range, where is the best place to buy?Walmart, in addition to several distributors online, appear to always be out of stock.

the cheapest FMJ 9mm that i found yesterday was 14.99 per box/50.ughhh[Edited on January 15, 2010 at 8:22 AM. Reason : at my local gun shop. Bass pro was sold out]
1/15/2010 8:22:31 AM
that's about what you will pay here ($12-14)Lawman's always has in stock, but they have a 2 box limit per style (which is why I think I've never had trouble finding ammo there). If you can find it, getting a 250 box at Wallyworld is good, but I haven't seen one of those in months
1/15/2010 9:09:35 AM
how many rounds do you usually go through on a normal range visit?
1/15/2010 9:30:30 AM
I am going to place a call to my contact over at Georgia Arms and get a quote for .380 Usually, they will bring the ammo up with them to the gun show, so I can avoid paying shipping (saves about $22 per 1000 rounds). I typically pay what the website says, unless I can get an order for 5000 rounds or more. At that point, they will discount for a large order. 9mm was 1000 for $270.40 was 1000 for $280 (I will pick this up at the gun show...I have already paid for it).45 was 1000 for $350 (haven't gotten this yet)Lawmens is a great place to shop around...but they have no .45 at all. Their 9mm selection is weak. PDHSC is a joke when it comes to ammo. They wanted $28 for a box of .45 (Georgia Arms is about $19 a box).^When I go to the range, I take 150 rounds for each gun and about 200 rounds of my .22I might not shoot all of the ammo that I take, but I never want to run out while I am there. Its too expensive to buy ammo at the range. I must say, I love my Ciener drop in conversion for my AR!
1/15/2010 9:59:34 AM
jesus, i was just looking at ammo prices...it'll cost me a fortune if i ever want to take my old H&R 732 .32SW revolver to the range.
1/15/2010 10:19:32 AM
YeaH I bring alot with me but I typically fire off about 50~ of 9mm, 30-40 of 38 and then around 100-150 of 22
1/15/2010 2:59:16 PM
where is the best place to go to check out holsters, need to find an owb holster
1/16/2010 5:31:45 PM
Had a great class today. The instructor made everything really easy to grasp and understand. I mean, it's not rocket science but it's having an instructor who doesn't mind answering tons of questions and going over tons of scenarios no matter how simple they are. His range test was pretty much the same as you guys have noted. 3 5 and 7 yards, but he also added his own test. 10 rounds, 7 yards, one handed. I blew the entire center out of my target My instructor also has a few other classes including some tactical and home defense ones. I may take the home defense class later on this year when it warms up because it's almost entirely on range and in the field shooting around corners and obstacles etc etc, sounds like a lot of fun.

I just got through shooting my new 12 gauge, I think that my dick is now 3 inches longer.
1/16/2010 7:11:20 PM
Anyone find any good deals at the gun show this weekend?
1/16/2010 8:01:32 PM
1/16/2010 8:26:55 PM
Does anyone know the local price for a Glock 36 or Glock 22?
1/16/2010 9:07:07 PM
I have seen them used for @$425 or so. Check Lawmans...they had a few.Anyone check out the ammo at the gun show? Was there any .45 available?

I visited Williamston this weekend to see some family and we dropped by Wally World for a few. The ammo case had most common calibers, although I wouldn't say it was "full". I grabbed 3 boxes of Federal Champion 9mm for $9.97/box.Too bad I have to pick up ammo in Williamston when I visit relatives instead of getting it at the local Wally World in Morrisville (or the one in Apex near my office). [Edited on January 17, 2010 at 11:07 PM. Reason : ]
1/17/2010 11:06:48 PM
Everytime I go to Wally World in Raleigh, they only have 40cal and 38sp. Always out of the good stuff.
1/17/2010 11:56:25 PM
I thought I was doing well at avoiding the "tactical" craze, but I guess not...
1/18/2010 11:14:28 AM
carrying concealed is definitely going to take some adjusting and changing of my warddrobe. I've been experimenting somewhat the past few days with what i've had on after work and at night just to see if the gun outline and locations are presented through and so far i've had little success in anything other than a sweatshirt or jacket.
1/19/2010 10:54:59 AM
from my little bit of experimenting, pocket carry is pretty much all i can do unless i'm wearing a jacket or coat or something bulky like that
1/19/2010 11:16:00 AM
You'll get used to it. I always carry my 9 in my waistband for easy access.
1/19/2010 11:29:39 AM
its like wearing a hat...after a while you dont even realize you're wearing the hati also dont tuck my shirts in though which helps
1/19/2010 11:56:47 AM
Most of the time you're the only one who notices...
1/19/2010 12:08:25 PM
^yep.
1/19/2010 12:15:51 PM
^^And even if someone does notice, they might run through their mind what it could be, and many things would be on that list, but not a gun. The vast, vast majority of people will not even have that thought cross their minds. If you're in an office environment or some place where you really can't afford to be 'made,' consider a truly deep concealment option like SmartCarry or Thunderwear.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfW0bBgnSFwhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQg_PQMD4SgYou can put a full-size firearm in there and people can look straight at it, knowing it's in there, and not be able to see it.
1/19/2010 12:27:36 PM
rrarms apparently just got a bunch of .380 in...
1/19/2010 1:27:50 PM
^ what brand i couldn't find any available on their site.
