Does anyone know where you can skeet shoot in Raleigh? Or close by?
1/3/2010 11:35:41 PM
^^that thing makes my eyeballs rain^if you can find someone that's a member of Durham County Wildlife Club, that's a great facility. I know it doesn't help much though.
1/4/2010 12:42:20 PM
^^ If you're willing to drive down to Fayetteville, the Fort Bragg Skeet Club in Spring Lake is open to the public.

Anyone know anything about the S&W 40 Sigma? Is it a good gun? It sells for really cheap?
1/8/2010 11:42:35 PM
It's cheap - and that's about it. You get what you pay for, and the Sigma is a prime example. It'll probably go bang most of the time, but if it were me, I'd just take the same $350 you'd spend on one of those and put it toward a used Glock, XD, or S&W M&P. Those are much better known for their reliability and quality construction.

Thanks for the heads up.

i took Rush's concealed carry class today. i highly recommend him.
1/9/2010 8:08:32 PM
Does anyone know anything about the Ruger Mini 30? I know it shoots the 7.62 round, but is it a good gun? What is a good price to pay for one?
1/9/2010 11:47:53 PM
from those that I know that have them, it is a good little rifle... I've never fired one myself. Personally, if I'm gonna mess around with a 7.62, i'm gonna get the saiga rifle, but that's just personal preference
1/10/2010 12:03:17 AM
What is a Saiga Rifle? How much do they run?
1/10/2010 12:26:36 AM
a good way to figure out what certain firearms are generally going for is the search for them on http://www.gunbroker.comit's like ebay for gunsthe saiga is similar to an AK. google it.
1/10/2010 12:46:59 AM
Also, for some guns http://world.guns.ru

Cheapest rifle you'll probably find in 7.62x39mm Russian (Soviet) is an SKS. I'm not sure what the prices on them run right now, but I wouldn't be willing to pay more than $200 for one which has been issued. The Mini-30 is just a M1/M14 style action that is chambered in 7.62x39mm. You'll probably be paying more for a Mini-30 than a Saiga/AK style rifle and accuracy would probably be comparable. The Mini-30 is based off of the Mini-14 which was a 5.56x45mm "version" of the M14. The concept is that it is supposed to be a "ranch rifle" where shooting predators to protect livestock would happen at close ranges and the rifle needs to be reliable. The AR platform far dominates that of the Mini-14 in customization and accuracy, while being similarly priced if you find a good deal. The question is, what is it that you're wanting to do? You've named interest in a few completely differing firearms.
1/10/2010 9:03:30 AM
I want a gun that will shoot when it needs to, for personal protection. I also want I gun that will be fun to shoot at the range. Any recommendations?
1/10/2010 4:18:58 PM
^You looking for something to conceal? Or you mean for home protection?
1/10/2010 4:26:46 PM
^^ yeah I'm a dumbass, I forgot that the mini-30 was x39. Just go with an SKS or AK platform if you're looking at a 7.62 x 39. Doesn't have to be Saiga, but you don't want to buy an AK without knowing what to look for.^ rather broad set of requirements there, might want to narrow it down some. ]
1/10/2010 4:28:27 PM
I was looking for 2. One being a handgun to conceal and carry on me, the other more like an assault rifle. I consided the ak or the ruger mini 30.
1/10/2010 5:20:32 PM
both an assault rifle and a handgun are poor choices for home defense when a 12 gauge shotgun can be had for about $200 imomaybe you need 3
1/10/2010 5:24:30 PM
Would anyone ever conceal, but not carry, a handgun in public?
1/10/2010 5:49:59 PM
lol
1/10/2010 5:51:59 PM
1/10/2010 5:55:25 PM
lol.. Is the Wasp-10 a good AK, I see they go for around $400 or is there a better AK?
1/10/2010 6:11:08 PM
What do you guys think about a Stoeger 12G. I am looking at that or a good ole Rem. 870.
1/10/2010 7:55:20 PM
Want a fun "plinker"? Ruger 10/22 .22 long rifle chambered small bore semi-automatic rifle. Plenty of accessories to make it tacticool as you want. I think it's about $20 from Walmart for 500 rounds (haven't bought any in a while). If you want something that'll kick your shoulder, you can go with an AK or SKS. 7.62x39mm is a much more powerful centerfire cartridge, but still has significantly less power than the .30-06, .308, or 7.62x51mm.For home defense, a handgun does well with hollow points, or a shotgun loaded with buckshot. A rifle has too much penetration almost all of the time when it comes to home defense (do you live out in the middle of nowhere?). You could also entertain a carbine that's chambered the same as your handgun if you wanted, so you'd only have to buy one type of ammo, and it would still not over penetrate badly in home defense. It's up to you though, I would say go out and fire someone else's rifles/handguns to see what you like.
1/10/2010 8:00:48 PM
Never pull the trigger on a round that looks like this:
1/10/2010 8:02:23 PM
ooops. Was that a reload or factory?
1/10/2010 8:09:52 PM
Have no idea, saw it on ARFCOM. Looks as if that cartridge was fired without catastrophe.
1/10/2010 8:50:30 PM
A reversed primer shouldn't do much harm in most guns. Definitely something you don't want to try on purpose though.
1/10/2010 10:54:57 PM
What do you guys think about Glocks? My first gun was a Glock and never had any problems with it. But I have seen some people really hate glocks.
1/10/2010 11:06:37 PM
I love my G30. If I ever found myself in a life-or-death situation, it would be the only gun in my arsenal that I would want to have to defend myself with.
1/10/2010 11:40:23 PM
<------ Huge glock fan
1/11/2010 12:05:48 AM
I don't mind a glock. If it were the end of the world and I needed a gun that I would almost NEVER clean and have to use regularly in all sorts of abusive conditions?I'd carry a glock.
1/11/2010 1:04:57 AM
Where should I look to purchase a hand gun in Raleigh? Also I never owned a hand gun, what are do you guys recommend for a first gun? Looking to spend about $500 max.
1/11/2010 2:06:58 AM
^PDHSC or Jim's Gun Shop.
1/11/2010 9:28:05 AM
Glocks go bang, and that is exactly what you're looking for as a baseline in a gun. The newest appear to be getting on board with the adjustable grip size bandwagon. A lot of purists don't like this, but it isn't going to affect the reliability.OTOH, Glock's customer service isn't winning any awards right now and I'm hearing a lot of anecdotal evidence that S&W is making big gains with the M&P and superior customer service. From a private buyer standpoint you really can't go wrong with an M&P or a Glock. There will always be lemons in either lot but your chances are slim and you'll definitely get it fixed with S&W and more than likely with Glock.
1/11/2010 11:30:54 AM
wheres the best place to get mossberg 500 accessories?]
1/11/2010 2:56:38 PM
I am leaning towards a Glock 9 mm.
1/11/2010 3:14:46 PM
if you like the style and design of the glock take a look at the Springfield XD. Very similar and come in many calibers as well. Also available in two-tone and OD Green if you wanted something other than black.
1/11/2010 3:29:24 PM
My buddy is talking about a cheap, but well reviewed .40 that will be at the next gun/knife show. Any thoughts? Maker is "Hipoint" iirc.
1/11/2010 3:30:05 PM
^^^^the interwebs. what do you want? when adding accessories to a home defense shotgun, keep in mind that someday a prosecutor might be holding it up for a jury of your peers idiots to see. extend the mag and shorten the barrel, but all the pistol grips and such are unnecessary imo.[Edited on January 11, 2010 at 3:30 PM. Reason : carats][Edited on January 11, 2010 at 3:31 PM. Reason : ^i've never heard anything good about hipoint]
1/11/2010 3:30:09 PM
hi-points are a cheap, heavy brand that go bang pretty consistently. my buddy has one... it's ok for a low budget firearm... I'd never depend on it for a carry piece thoughas for shotgun accessories, I don't see how adding accessories will hurt you in any way (legally). Hell, mine is all decked out for target/fun-gun shooting and it doubles as a home defense weapon. Pistol grips, etc are legal in NC (no gray area) so I say go all out if you want to. I love having my ATI adjustable pistol grip stock - it makes the gun that much more fun. [Edited on January 11, 2010 at 4:26 PM. Reason : img change]
1/11/2010 4:21:02 PM
they are certainly legal, but to the average (read: stupid) citizen, my completely factory camo mossberg 835 isn't nearly as intimidating as that^ and it doesn't make you look like the cold-blooded killer the prosecutor may try to portray you as. hopefully, mine would simply be viewed as a hunting firearm that i was lucky to have beside the bed i agree that those accessories are legal, look cool, and can make it more fun to shoot.you have to remember these folks don't know shit about guns aside from what they see in movies/tv/video games. just look at the assault weapons ban. looks make a difference to these people. they do not understand that the firearms function the same.[Edited on January 11, 2010 at 4:28 PM. Reason : afsd]
1/11/2010 4:24:57 PM
I can understand that... but it's a slipery slope to me... next thing to be argued is to never use a pistol or a hunting rifle as a HD tool because of the excessive power, capacity, scope/site, size, etc, etc, etc.
1/11/2010 4:28:47 PM
those would be actual functional differences in the weapon. what i'm saying is that if you can get a not-quite-so-intimidating HD shotgun that functions just as well as the tacticool one, why risk it?[Edited on January 11, 2010 at 4:31 PM. Reason : look out for yourself, b/c a jury and the govt sure won't.][Edited on January 11, 2010 at 4:33 PM. Reason : fwiw i don't think i'd ever choose a handgun or rifle over a shotgun for HD anyway][Edited on January 11, 2010 at 4:34 PM. Reason : so maybe i'm biased]
