Anytime a software update is X.X.X, it's going to minor bug fixes. X.X adds features and X is a major revamp/upgrade.

2.2.1 just got pwnt by the dev team a couple of hours ago.

pwnagetool 2.2.5: http://bit.ly/pwnage225 | sha1 8fe2f20c00f48b37d8262d6872a12166c6e165ba
quickpwn 2.2.5: http://bit.ly/quickpwn225 | sha1 2f1353242ef10dc408e95786643e497fcd04e4ea

(note: there is no official version of quickpwn that works with windows. yet. dev team is working on it. don't trust quickpwn.com)
(also also wik: still no ipod touch 2g unlock, but they're working on it)

if you want to keep yellowsn0w working, use pwnagetool and make sure to deselect "update baseband"

also, to fix DFU mode easily on 10.5.6:

Quote :
"As noted previously OS X 10.5.6 introduced a bug that affected the use of DFU mode. with some Macs. There have been previously published hacks and techniques to fix this, but here is another method that can be used to easily restore functionality.

1. You will need an account with ADC (Apple Developer Connection) this is free and takes a few minutes to sign up, you should read the terms and conditions carefully and you should only sign up if you are thinking of developing applications in the future - http://developer.apple.com/mac/
2. Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily Log release for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33” (yes, that is a “5” in 10.5.5 - this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension).
3. Install IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg from within the disk image
4. Reboot your system!
"

Wait, you updated your jailbroken phone? Why in god's name would you do that? Was it really worth losing all your "jailbroken-ness" for a few days just so you could say you were running the newest firmware?

2.2.1 Doesn't seem like its worth the hassle of upgrading, if you have a JB phone. I think I will keep my 2.2 under another more worth while update.

yeah, i should have read a little more before i upgraded but whatever..i had so much shit installed the phone was taking like a minute to open apps sometimes so it was probably good to go ahead and clear most of the apps off and just put the ones on that i actually use anymore

and all of my settings for springboard and shit like that were still there and came right up after i installed the apps.. i thought that was pretty cool

dropped my iPhone in a swamp the other day, grabbed it with a quickness, then immediately dropped it again didnt get real wet, hope the two peice case and screen protector helped here

anyway, got it out of the swampwater, shut it down, by the time I got back to civilization, it appeared totally dry. booted up, tried a call, couldnt hear shit- a little water was in the headphone jack. damn phone works perfectly, and didnt get a scratch on it.

You people have a really odd definition of trolling.

I mean I just wondered why shpencil would do something like that, and his next post on the subject was even in agreement that it wasn't exactly the best thing to do.

I guess my posts have a way of upsetting the delicate pH balance in your vaginas or something. Y'all really need to lighten up.

Anyway, I wonder if there's any way I can post this link about Apple finally deciding to work with Adobe to get flash on the iPhone without synapse getting his panties in a bunch about something. Probably not.

thinking about getting an iPhone after all. What do you recommend for protection? There are a lot of different cases and protectors out there. My buddy has the rubberized case on his, but it makes getting in and out of his jeans pocket a pain in the butt.

I just use a screen-protector film and a velcro belt clip. I had one of the rubber things but experienced the same problem getting it in and out of my pocket.

a belt clip? seriously?

i've had mine since about a month after the new one came out, have never used any kind of screen protector and don't have a scratch on the screen of mine. i personally would never use a rubber case for two reasons.. 1 is any dirt that gets between the rubber and iphone case basically turns to sand paper and can do more damage than good .. and 2 it's a bitch to get out of your pocket.

they do make some nice thin clear plastic ones though and that's what i'd use if i were going to use one.

So I finally got around to subscribing to Coach Lowes podcast and is there only one episode available?

I've tried all the settings to subscribe to all the episodes, keep all episodes/etc. But the only one I get is from 1/21/2009.

meh.. maybe more of an iTunes/podcast question. But I am trying to set it up on my iPhone...

this is more of an iTunes question, but this is probably the best thread for it.

just a preface, i have never owned an iPod or iPhone thus have never fully played with or operated iTunes other than just using friends playlists to play songs.

But my main question is how much of a computer killer is iTunes? I've heard people say that it really can bog down a computer and my laptop is already pretty slow even after i transported all my media files to an external HDD. Any tips to running iTunes smoothly, besides a new computer? I feel like that would almost be more worthwhile than reformatting at this point in my laptop's life anyway.

anyone using an unlocked iPhone 3G witha prepaid sim card? i'm debating between tmobile and at&t and plans and data and i dunno wtf else.

Its an Aussie iPhone and im not sure how long i'll be in the US so i want prepaid and data if possible. worst case i'm told that i can buy a $15 at&t gophone, activate it, and swap SIMs. but there won't be any data.

I wouldn't go that far. At that point you've got all the functionality of an iPod Touch, a GPS unit, and a regular cell phone.

Not as useful without a data plan? sure. Worthless? Hardly.

Well, you know Noen his opinion is the only one that ever matters.

I have an iphone without a data plan.

no complaints here.

on the rare occasion where I need to use the internet and don't have wifi, i just pay by the meg. I still pay way less than the $30 a month i would for the data plan.

i wouldnt say worthless...just castrated

Sure you can use wi-fi, but then you cant use stuff like GPS on the go...but i guess if youre talking 1st gen then gps doesnt matter. im always looking stuff up on the internet when im out (and theres no wifi). it would suck not being able to do that

just get a cheapo kind at walmart. they have a pack of like 3 for $6 i think it was

i actually did use one of those for a little while and forgot it was even on there until it came off when i was putting the phone in my pocket once somehow.. not sure why or how but yea, i don't think you can really go too wrong.

just make sure you get one for the iphone and not ipod touch.. the whole ear speaker hole thing is a good thing to have

[Edited on February 5, 2009 at 11:34 AM. Reason : although there still isn't a scratch on my screen and i only used the protector for maybe 2 weeks]

yeah, i bought a used 1st gen. Since i already use ATT i didn't even need to jailbreak it. AFAIK, buying one used and either jailbreaking it or using an ATT sim card is the only way to not be forced into a data plan.

i thought they were locked to the sim they are activated on and required another activation before you could use even an at&t sim card

i have done 0 reading on the subject though so i really don't know

If you don't have a data plan, it's just like any other smartphone. I guess if you really just want an iPod phone, yeah it's worth it. But GPS is useless without data access, a majority of the non-game applications are data access dependent, and a good chunk of the built in apps are pretty restricted in usefulness without it.

danny, the point being if you already have the iPhone and use it's features, going to a no-data plan is going to suck. If you got the phone to be a tele-iPod, then it doesn't really matter anyway.

He asked about a 3G phone, so I assumed that's what he had.

And as long as it's jailbroken, there are a couple of apps on cydia that you can download that allow you to pre-load maps from google maps or other locations. Obviously I haven't tried it out, but I assume that lets you get around the whole no data for GPS maps issue.

^yes. when in contacts view...look at the top left. there is a button pointing to the left that says 'groups'. click on this and it will take you to the different contact groups. (which you can also create different groups) but you will see "All contacts" then "exchange contacts" which will include the entire directory of people even if they aren't in theory stored in your contacts on your phone.

also one more question. My company uses exchange, but we don't have an enterprise server or anything like that. So i can just use the standard iPhone MS Exchange email program for push business email right? There is no need for the enterprise data plan correct?

the cheaper one does everything the other one does..one is just the one businesses are suppose to use and the other is for regular people

they don't block anything or anything like that if you get the cheaper plan so yes, it'll work.

question. I don't qualify for an upgrade at this point in time. The guy at the store told me that since AT&T is locked in with Apple on the iPhone there is no way to manually give me the discount rate, like with other smartphones, no matter what my tenure has been with AT&T. Is this true or was he just blowing smoke to get me to drop the $400 bones on the 8gig?

It's the new, apple-legal version of Podcaster, which apple pwnt from their stores. SO MUCH better than apple's cludgy method of podcast downloading
