Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Idle Time! What Is It?Essentially Folding@Home uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor. The North Carolina State University Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the Top 100 teams in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the support of anyone who would like to help. All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home on it with great results. How can I Help?Download and install the software appropriate for your OS (Windows/Linux/Mac). For dual/quad core computers, be sure you install the SMP client. It will get you and the NCSU team far more points than the traditional client. Whichever client you choose, we recommend running the Folding@Home client as a service. The client will run in the background without notification, and will release CPU resources as needed since it runs at the lowest priority. The NCSU Team Number is 59.Visit the team homepage for detailed installation instructionsWindows ComputersWe recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions. Mac and Linux ComputersThere are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the regular console clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.Playstation 3PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! FYI... GPU2 for NVIDIA nearing completion.quote from http://folding.typepad.com/news/2008/06/gpu1-has-been-retired-gpu2-for-nvidia-release-nearing.html

i will be adding this computer as soon as my new laptop arrives
6/7/2008 4:19:52 PM
What are the specs on that computer?
6/7/2008 4:54:01 PM
sorry about all the posting...im just testing the sig functions[Edited on June 7, 2008 at 7:09 PM. Reason : ]

^ damn man you're catching up with chemp i gotta try to get a server back up on monday and maybe we can at least get back up to 70k
6/8/2008 10:39:32 AM
Yea that x9650 stock is worth more points than the whole 3dsmax server farm at work. The farm was old hardware that would be thrown away if I hadnt found a "use" for it. The only caviot is I can only use the x9650 at night and on the weekend because the user needs the processing power during the day.
6/8/2008 4:10:40 PM
#39 now. movin on up!.
6/10/2008 10:27:54 PM
^^i have the same problem our 3ds max farm though is getting upgraded to dual quad-core xeon's & 16gb of memory each machine .. should be getting them soon.
6/10/2008 10:52:02 PM
anyone else seen a huge drop in PPD? my T9300 was spitting out ~1500ppd, but the past 3 WU have only yielded ~800ppd...what's causing the near halving of points?
6/11/2008 7:11:56 AM
Well there goes my hopes to catching up with you but that will be awesome for the team. I hope when school is back in more people will sign up to keep us from dropping spots because they wont have to pay for power in the dorms. I still feel that $5-$10 month in power is worthy of curing disease and in the mean time, the fun point competition.
6/11/2008 9:00:41 AM
^^ what workunits have you been working on? project number and point value would be helpful. are you getting the PPD info from fahmon?
6/11/2008 9:12:58 AM
anyone got the new x5482 yet? i think its like the newest of the new
6/11/2008 9:23:14 AM
I just started w/ my ps3. Where do I get a username?
6/15/2008 9:52:54 PM
You can pick any username you want, but if you want it to be unique, then go here and search.http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userstatsIf you can't find one, just enter KRUZNBY. Welcome to the team.
6/15/2008 10:26:14 PM
I also just added my new 80gb ps3 to the folding cause this past weekend. I should get my server and gaming rig back on
6/16/2008 6:08:44 PM
Don't know if anyone else has seen this. Nice stats page:http://www.hardfolding.com/fh_stats_test/index.php?pz=101&tnum=59
6/17/2008 2:02:33 PM
congrats to iceman for getting his production to >5K PPD!!!!!!Unfortunately I've slipped to just below that mark. Will be back over soon. It'd be pretty awesome if we could have 5-6+ people producing that much70K PPD is within reach!]
6/17/2008 3:54:31 PM
Hopefully my Q9550 workstation at work comes in soon, and I'll put 1 SMP on that and run another overnight when I'm not there. That should boost me to up around 6.5K PPD...
6/17/2008 4:47:33 PM
^^ thanks!I am in the process of adding more machines to the cause.Looking for a PPD to increase over 8-9K in the comming weeks.
6/18/2008 1:26:59 PM
^^ nice! just out of curiosity, do you notice degraded performance when running two smp clients? I run two smp clients and i don't notice any issues ^gg man, maybe one of us on the team can finally compete with chemp! you'll be getting close soon]
6/18/2008 1:36:07 PM
slowing putting together my htpc. Once i get it up i'll be running folding on it all summer.
6/18/2008 1:37:39 PM
i had a great idea, but havent done it yet... but I thought about going into circuit city / bestbuy and loading FAH on all the new desktops in service mode.this would help our team greatly!!
6/18/2008 1:55:16 PM
while i applaud your thinking, I don't think those efforts would go unnoticed...and even if you were successful I doubt the clients would be running that long before the pc is sold/re-imaged etc. and just as an aside, installing as a service is obviously important for machines which you won't ever touch again]

6/19/2008 2:39:30 PM
I started using the GPU2 for my 8800gtx (stock) with an e6600 @ 3.6Ghz running the SMP client and Im now averaging 2825ppd. The GPU is adding 785ppd. Not too shabby. So what are you guys getting? I also might have to overclock the GPU at a later date once I know it will finish a WU at stock speeds.
6/19/2008 9:16:36 PM
600ppd - 8800GTS 320MB G80FYI - for the gpu client the data/work is installed under Documents & Settings/Username/Application Data/folding&home gpu/work for those who want to monitor it via fahmon[Edited on June 19, 2008 at 9:26 PM. Reason : .]
6/19/2008 9:25:04 PM
Ok so after a night of CPU/GPU processing my ppd have gone to 1815ppd on the cpu and 1970 on the GPU. I might need to install this on the quadros at work. Here I come CHEMP.
6/20/2008 6:43:50 AM
^won't work, i already tried the FX1700's here at work also i think your GPU ppd might vary, they have multiple WU's, various point schemes
6/20/2008 10:43:00 AM
Aight guys just added my ATI 2600 HD to the team. But I need some help getting my nVidia 8800GTS 512 on board. Im running Vista 64bit and want to get some more PPD in the bank!Using the CUDA drivers from the nVidia site only support 4 cards, and my 8800GTS isnt one of them...HELPS ME PLEASE![Edited on June 20, 2008 at 11:51 AM. Prospero here is the link for the beta7 for your fx1700's http://www.stanford.edu/~beberg/Folding@home-GPU-systray-612b7.msiUnfortunately none of the quadros at work fall under the supported cards We have fx3500's.

6/20/2008 4:55:08 PM
someone want to post all this on the website
6/20/2008 5:13:59 PM
I don't want to annoy anyone here, but I don't feel like reading through all of this....Is this stable on Vista? Any noticeable effects on performance?
6/22/2008 6:53:00 PM
i run the smp client on vista...and it works fine if you follow the instructions posted here/on the website. the client runs at the lowest priority so i dont notice any impact on performance.
6/22/2008 7:57:33 PM
maybe I'm retarded, but I didn't see a download link for the smp client
6/23/2008 6:55:20 PM
yeah they started hiding them at the bottom of the download page for some reasonhttp://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download
6/23/2008 6:59:53 PM

So apparently leaving my PS3 on has made me climb up a lot in our charts
6/28/2008 5:22:50 PM
yeah I forgot to leave mine running. damnit I'll be playing catch up all week now.
6/28/2008 7:56:15 PM
Don't forget you can use the PS3 screen saver feature to start F@H and just leave the PS3 on all of the time.
