http://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2015/03/reports-challenge-unc-scandals-1993-start-date

Quote :
"Smith said he and Willingham identified independent studies courses as early as the fall of 1988 that listed Nyang'oro as the instructor, an indicator of irregularity since Nyang'oro was found to be at the center of the improprieties alongside Crowder.

'It's that course that really initiated or launched the system because it was a course that was created for two basketball players,' he said.

After the initial course in the fall of 1988, Smith said irregularities largely disappeared until the fall of 1989, when Nyang’oro became a full professor in the department."

Syracuse just got murdered. This is the best paragraph to take away from the NCAA ruling:

Quote :
"The duration and nature of violations in this case required strong penalties beyond what

the institution self-imposed. Improper institutional involvement and influence in a

student-athlete's academic work in order to gain or maintain eligibility is a violation of

NCAA rules and a violation of the most fundamental core values of the NCAA and

higher education. The behavior in this case, which placed the desire to achieve success

on the basketball court over academic integrity, demonstrated clearly misplaced

institutional priorities. Similarly, many of the violations occurred as a result of persons

of leadership engaging in or condoning conduct that was contrary to the NCAA

Constitution and bylaws"

That's UNC's situation in a fucking nutshell. Let's just hope they tie-in the correct dates. I will bust a nut if they take down the '05-'09 banners. Double nut if they somehow take it back to '93...but that might be asking for too much.

By the way they were punished under the more lenient rules based on when the investigation started. Think about that... UNC should just pack it up and go home.

** once again though the ncaa didn't have balls to take away a title so I still doubt we will see them do that to UNC. Said it found violations back to 2001 but only vacated wins starting in 2003-2004 (suspiciously the year after Carmelo)

But does that mean they found violation in '01, but not '02 and '03?? Or they just chose to ignore the violations during those years so they didn't have to get into the "taking down the banner" discussion.

If it comes to that with UNC, I just don't see how they can work around it because there were so many fake classes during '05 and '09 ('05 especially was a monster year for fake classes).

the 2001 violations weren't severe enough to warrant a banner coming down and also they self reported violations that year iirc

I think that is the key. These are when they were deemed to be ineligible.

^^ ineligible players are ineligible players - there are no degrees of it (unless you're Corey Magettee and Duke). My guess is they didn't want to even go there in 2003. Would open up a can of worms.

Maybe the 01-03 infractions involved something like not following the drug testing policy (Not testing frequently enough or something) vs a particular player being ineligible due to benefits or academics.

^ Yeah...I've been looking for someone to break down the details by year. I find it highly unlikely that the NCAA would open itself up to the backlash of not taking away championships when the transgressions were the same for each year.

I'm just curious if Boeheim or another organization/coach in a similar situation will completely, and publicly, flip their shit when the NCAA does nothing more than give UNC a halfhearted finger-wagging.

"Reading too much N & O. No evidence coaches steered players to paper classes. And even if they did, which they didn't per the evidence, paper classes are legitimate (everywhere). Kids didn't go to class bc there weren't classes to attend. You meet with advisor, pick a topic, and write a research paper. This goes on at schools all over the country. In addition, there was nothing wrong with the secretary of he AFAM dept. grading papers of the guiding professor approves it. These are called grading proxies. This occurs all over as well...UNC, NYU, U of Utah, even gasp...Stanford. If anything, the secretary is guilty of easy grading. There's nothing wrong with taking an easy class in college. In this case, the course was easy and both students and athletes took advantage. She also graded regular students easier than athletes (via higher grades).

So again, no steering and no show bc there were no classes TO attend (accepted practice across academia). Rogue woman who graded liberally yes."

Carolina would come out very easily IMO if all they do is lose Roy. Hell, some of those idiots want to fire Roy because they are finally playing teams you judge them by now, haha.

The reason Roy is on the chopping block is it was active his entire time at UNC and he is the one to sacrifice from the UNC camp. Like I said though, a lot of people would say that alone is not enough to reform the scale of what was scene from UNC.

I hear ya...if it comes down to it, they'll pin it all on Roy if they can.

The man is understandably losing it, and they'll have no problems fucking over one of their own to salvage what's left of their reputation. But there ain't much of that left in my opinion.

I mean, I don't want to revisit this, but State cut ties with Valvano pretty quickly when he didn't even commit a violation.

I mean there are really only 2 outcomes here. Either UNC gets the worst punishment in NCAA history, or the NCAA loses any credibility it has left and this is the final straw that brings the whole thing down.

This is pretty much on point. The thing is, UNC fans and hell probably students/alum won't really give a shit unless they lose a banner. For them it is really about those banners, like if they don't lose any banners that nothing really happened. If they do vacate the amount of wins you are talking about, it should be three banners.

The NCAA drops at least one banner (when vacating wins, as done with Syracuse) with something like a 1 season ban on Roy (like Boeheim) with no post season for 2 years.

Or it WILL cause the NCAA to pretty much go bottoms up. If UNC gets away with this, nobody has any reason to give a fuck about creating students from their athletes. Then we will lose college sports as we have come to know/love.

Now if the ACC wants to do something to show it's support of any NCAA decision then they will give ACC Championships to anyone who played UNC in the final and lost in the last two decades. Then we make shirts for ACC Champions 2007!!

I just don't see it. It'll be same old same old, shameful headlines but no real comeuppance. Seriously, this is exactly like the outcry to every unarmed dude that is gun downed by the police: Everybody convinces themselves that the hammer will finally come down, but at the end of the day it is the same old "I had to use deadly force" line.

1. Let's not compare this to a race of young men being shot dead by the police.

2. Let's not give up hope entirely. I'm kinda lazy, but the only reason we've gotten this far is due to random oppositional pressure...straight up strangers on the Internet being like, "Wait a minute...that ain't right...here's what's wrong with that..."

We can keep pushing. They're already suffering. And, if you like shit-talking, which I don't, you got ammo for days. (I'd enjoy the whole shit-talking thing except any remarks sent my way make me wanna get violent. )
