^^^ She wasn't serious about the suggestion that there should be a bill requiring everyone to go to church, but she was serious about the idea that everyone should be going to church because we've eroded morally, and we were a more moral country in the 50s, and because we're so much more immoral, people need guns in more places, everywhere, to defend themselves against all those immoral people.

But yeah, local politics are filled with complete nuts. This is probably the best argument against stronger states rights...

No. Let that shithole of a state dry up. How many natural waterways have we already altered so that state can get water? It isn't our fault that shitty mismanagement of natural resources have led them to where they are.

They should have seen drought coming. Lord knows I'm sure many climatologists calling for global doom and gloom reside in that state.

I just hope they don't move to NC once their state is a desert wasteland. Oh and we better start looking for somewhere else to grow all of our crops.

While water management has been poor, and long-term planning with knowledge of water shortages also lacking, prolonged, severe drought and its impacts aren't things that governments have a lot of control over or resources to handle. The biggest failure, IMHO, is their lack of investment in desalinization and water distribution systems. California groundwater, rivers, and reservoirs can only provide so much. Desalinization is California's only solution.

but California has invested in desalination before during periods of droubt only to have to mothball them when they weren't needed a few years later, it's not quite as simple as saying "yes, we need desalination" because that's a very expensive investment that is not worth it if the drought period will end soon; it comes down to how much you believe forecasting.

how do places manage waste from desalination? Is there a plan, or do they just pump it back into the ocean?

I'm sure 1/8th of the USA's total GDP "drying" up wouldn't effect the rest of the country.

No one here seems really worried--we have so much money they'll just turbo build desalination plants and everyone will shut up about it. I think it's basically just a political and media tool to generate scare tactics.

Carlsbad already has a plant coming online for the San Diego area, and they will restart Santa Barbara's soon enough.

Climate Change + Drought + Population Growth + Industry Growth + Water Interception (e.g. rain not making it to groundwater/rivers/lakes etc. for replenishment) = Need a new source of water

Either Californians lack the ability to forecast feature trends or just aren't willing (as they haven't been) to bite the bullet on really expensive water. Regardless, California will end up relying on desalinization. I know how expensive it is and the issues with the waste. Water demand will drive them regardless.

Mother Earth is about to El Nino the fuck out of us over the coming year. If they can make it through the summer (wildfires, more restrictions, scary drops in reservoirs, etc) then they will get some rain in the late summer/fall. It won't get them back to where they need to be, but it will be enough for everyone to stop caring again and kick the can into the future until this all happens again in 5 years.
