The cop shot someone in the back that was running away from him. He used lethal force when his life was not in danger. He should be charged with murder.

What does it matter what rumfel thinks? The state, who trains these guys like 800 hours, says "oh they pointed a weapon? Dead."

^^It seems like a pretty "by-the-books" shooting. I wasn't there. I honestly don't know if it was justified or not. Yes, the guy was running away from the cops. They were likely following their training as he had their weapon, fleeing the scene.

Does the training need to change? Yes. I think there needs to be a change in how we train our police in these situations. Two things could have completely altered the outcome here.

1. They should have actually participated in the community by taking him by his sister's house. It should have never gotten past that point.
2. Once he started running, a decision should have been made in the officers head: "We have his name, his address. We let him go, we'll catch up with him later."

But on the other hand, the guy was fleeing with a weapon. Should the cops have really let him go?

There are a lot of "what if's" here....what if they would have let him go and he ended up at his sister's anyway? What if they had let him go and something happened with him and someone else?

At what point do we just stop policing for fear of an incident, any incident, escalating to a shooting such as this then a murder charge?

I'm just playing devil's advocate here because everybody is going to jump on this cop because of what's going on at the moment. Does the cop deserve 1st degree murder? I just don't see it here. Maybe 2nd degree or voluntary manslaughter?

You list two things like there aren't 1000 options in that situation beside shooting him. It's fairly clear the officers life was in no immediate danger. A clear and obvious danger that can't be avoided should be the high bar to clear for a shooting.

Even if you want to be a "oakleys on a boat selfie" guy, the cops could have jumped him together and beat him down. That would have still been a garbage response but at least he'd be alive.

Yeah the options aren’t just 1) shoot him or 2) just leave.

yes. it’s an easy yes without even knowing how it ended.

was he going to go on a tasering spree? even if he did, he didn’t deserve to die over taking a taser.

That's why I go back to de-escalation training.

If you completely discount the drunk driving, the handcuffs should have never come out to start with.

A dude that’s drunk and was just passed out in his car probably wasn’t gonna get far before passing out again. Or throwing up. Or both.

^That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why would any organization composed of Northern Aggressors support Confederate monuments?

That's mostly rhetorical. I know why. But it still makes no sense on the surface.

just thought it was funny to see a throwback term like that used in 2020

Trump’s EO bans use of the chokehold....except when an officer believes their life is in jeopardy. In other words...this probably won’t do much. Because as we’ve seen over and over officers are always given the benefit of the doubt in that situation.

So how long until NC State renames Daniels Hall? Raleigh has already removed a statue of Josephus Daniels and WCPSS is renaming the middle school currently named after him.

Daniels is one of my IE buildings and I wasn't aware it was named after someone controversial. But i couldn't care less about the name of the building, when the building itself remains. Shout out to all the Harrelson Hall STANS like my mom. RIP HH

Yeah I don't understand why the group that was transformed from a shooting sport organization to a pro-gun lobbyist group by violent racist murderer Harlon Carter wouldn't be pushing for justice in this case.
