So everywhere I've read I keep hearing that weight loss is about 80% diet and 20% exercise. When I was successful in losing all my weight I was sitting pretty watching calories and working out six times a week. I know that that discipline is why it paid off. That being said, I need to stop treating American food like alcohol and get back to my low-calorie diet.

Will, I found that it is my diet that drives my weight loss. I have been extremely active for years at a consistent rate (working out 5-6 days a week) and I found that when I work out and don't watch my diet, nothing happens. But this spring when I cleaned up my diet I started dropping weight and seeing more muscle. I really think it varies from person to person but for me, I have to watch what I eat if I want to see the results that I want.

Joie, don't let that get to you. My dad will forward me stuff he finds on the Internet for weight loss (mostly articles about getting enough sleep a night and drinking enough water). I'm like "ok a) I do this already and b) what are you trying to tell me?" I have learned I just have to let it roll off my back because I'm figuring out what works for me.

^^I said i was sorry!

I have struggled losing weight. This week, I have changed my diet and workout routine thanks to some advice from a friend. Currently, I lift about 4 times/week with 30 minutes of cardio after each session (Mon, Tues, Thur, Fri). I then do 45-60 minutes cardio on my non-lifting day (Wed). As for my diet, I'm concentrating on eat healthier and drinking more water. I'm trying to cut down to 1-2 diet sodas a week.My currents stats are 5'10 212 lbs. I want to get down to 170lbs. I'm not sure what my body fat % is.[Edited on July 9, 2011 at 6:32 PM. Do you track your calories?I've been trying to lose weight since the beginning of the year, but wasn't really been getting anywhere. About a month-and-a-half ago I began tracking calories. Even though I was eating healthy, I was eating a lot more than I thought.I actively tracked all my meals for about 3 weeks to get a better idea of how much I should be eating. Now I'm steadily losing weight.I used Nut to track my calories:http://nut.sourceforge.net/
7/9/2011 7:11:40 PM
Ok, I think I'm going to take some prohormones and see if I can get cut before my liver shuts down.
7/9/2011 7:42:38 PM
just eat cxn livers to avoid that

So yesterday was a small victory.I counted calories for the first time in a month and ate healthily. My portion sizes were okay and then after dinner I went kayaking for 30 minutes. Had some yogurt and cottage cheese for dinner and called it a day. It's only one, but I feel it was a small win on my way back to getting in shape.
7/10/2011 9:13:51 AM
That's great many small victories lead to bigger victories, yoAfter a weekend of drinking I feel all bloated definitely going for a run tomorrow (visiting bmel and ThePeter today)

ok, so I started all of this back in april, when I have a picture taken of me by a friend and I had fat face. I won't post that pic because I feel disgusted by it, but it has led me to really do a transformation. I went home afterwards and weighed myself at 225 lbs, the second heaviest I had been discounting the day of my wedding. (lol)Not thinking I would stick to any habit of exercising I was doubtful and didn't take a before picture at that point. However, after about a month of continuous effort I realized I had better do it so that I could notice changes that I might not see daily. So, some stats:starting point (april 22nd):weight: 225 lbsbmi: 26.7date of "before" pics (june 5th):weight: 212 lbs (down 13 lbs)bmi: 25.1date (july 9th):weight: 200.2 lbs (down 25 lbs)bmi: 23.7My goal is to get to 180 but this is my public start i supposeI realize bmi is not an accurate measure of much of anything, but since I started fat, I think it works and as of this morning apparently at 198.8 ]

awesome job!! can definitely see progress... gg
7/10/2011 11:10:04 AM
My mom came to visit me for my birthday last week and kept calling me skinny, haha. I'm down to 150 lbs / size 6, which is definitely the smallest I've been pretty much ever. I was a size 14 this time last year. Thanks to Nerdchick and the talk shop thread, I found this awesome bathing suit.Still got some thunda thighs to lose, but I'm pretty damn happy.
7/10/2011 11:52:05 AM
Squid dropping from a 14 to a 6 is awesome.Congrats on all of your hard work paying off!
7/10/2011 11:57:02 AM
^^ you look AMAZING. The bathing suit is super fitting too because you are a Wonder Woman. Great job!I had to buy a new pair of jeans (down a size for the first time in years) and they're already way too big on me so I might have to go back and try on another smaller size already. This is great and all but damn I wasn't expecting to have to go out and buy another pair of jeans already. FYI I was a size 30 in Joe Jeans, now at a size 29 and they're way baggy on me so I might need a size 28 (I haven't been a size 28 in 4 years).
7/10/2011 12:14:19 PM
GG ladies tartsquid, you look amazing!!
7/10/2011 3:45:36 PM
amazing tartsquid nice job
7/10/2011 6:01:05 PM
I feel that after lurking around this thread for awhile, I should post something. So this is my before and current.
7/10/2011 6:56:37 PM
wow - nice job AWESOME progress
7/10/2011 6:58:14 PM
Whoa, Perrin! Nice! You look even better than you did ten years ago!!! Love the progress pics from everyone. Y'all look amazing. Also, totally diggin' the wonder woman suit.
7/10/2011 8:51:17 PM
So after getting back on track I've lost ~4-5 lbs in the past three days.Counting calories and being active sure works out nicely.
7/11/2011 11:21:17 AM
I got a silly question. I usually workout when I get home from work which is around 5:30pm. My workout lasts about 90the minutes ( lift 60 min, cadio 30 min). After I have my post workout shake (immediately after my workout), how long should I wait to have dinner?
7/11/2011 12:12:03 PM
why would you wait?
7/11/2011 12:27:57 PM
Also, what is your post-workout shake for? Is it proteins? You could try and get that protein from your dinner rather than the shake.
7/11/2011 1:11:34 PM
The shake is for protein and its quick to make. [Edited on July 11, 2011 at 1:59 PM. Reason : ...]
7/11/2011 1:56:30 PM
I'd say drink the shake after your lifting, then between cardio and your shower (unless you're one of those nasty fucks), it should be about an hour gap between that and your meal.
7/11/2011 1:56:45 PM
7/11/2011 2:13:56 PM
^^ So, its ok to have my shake between lifting and cardio?
7/11/2011 2:23:58 PM
That's what I do. Unless its a huge shake thats going to slosh around in your stomach, I don't see the concern.
7/11/2011 2:30:19 PM
Oh it's gonna be a foam roller kinda night
7/12/2011 5:29:38 PM
you should take your post workout shake before your workout if you want the protein to reach your muscles as soon as you're done working out[Edited on July 12, 2011 at 6:29 PM. Reason : .]
7/12/2011 6:28:56 PM
if I did that on leg day, the shake would be coming right back up.
7/12/2011 7:02:17 PM
Yeah. Nasty. I can't even drink water within 20 min of a workout without it coming back up. Couldn't imagine having a shake right before workout.
7/12/2011 8:26:00 PM
so according to livestrong, im not eating near enough every day.and I eat...ALOT...but doing p90x its offsetting it I guess.this sucks, thats so much more broccoli and chicken than I want to eat every day...and eggs.
7/14/2011 7:29:46 PM
how much are you eating?
7/14/2011 7:30:21 PM
so far apparently only 1000 calories...but I eat every 2-3 hours because I get so hungry.watermelon, almonds, celery, eggs, oatmeal for breakfast/brunch snack then a hummus turkey sandwich for lunch with an apple. banana for mid afternoon with a can of tuna in water then dinner is grill chicken and all the broccoli I can stand to eat.I have protein shake at least once a day somewhere in there...blueberries and rasberries in it.I essentially follow that most days mixing up the snacks and veggies and all...but essentially the same.livestrong tells me I have 1600 calories LEFT as of right now before I even do p90x tonight.
7/14/2011 7:36:40 PM
1000?!?!?! holy shit son.
7/14/2011 7:39:00 PM
I guess its almost TOO clean of a diet...I dunno.
7/14/2011 7:41:04 PM
yea, 1000 calories isn't enough. i was at 1300 last summer and that was a bit low.
7/14/2011 7:56:36 PM
I think I was eating too few calories a few months ago and felt frustrated because I wasn't losing weight. I upped my calories and things took a turn for the better. 1000 sounds low even for most females so I can't imagine a lot of guys being able to sustain on it.
7/14/2011 9:15:36 PM
it slows down your metabolism way too much
7/14/2011 9:17:49 PM
Here's my diet so far:Breakfast - protein shake (1 cup of milk, 2 tbsp of peanut butter, 1 scoop of whey protein, 1 banana) and 2 hardboiled eggsLunch - usually a home made salad or lean cuisine (I've been getting the spring rolls lately)PreWorkout- Banana and string cheese (looking to add some lean meat for more protein)PostWorkout- Protein shake (1 cup of milk, 2 tbsp of peanut butter, 1 scoop of whey protein, 1/2 cup of dry oatmeal)Dinner - Grilled chicken, broccoli and cottage cheese.
