HEY GUESS WHAT IT JUST HAPPENED AGAINJCool29 said, "that was bad, you donkey"pilgrimshoes said, "skill"pilgrimshoes said, "=0"JCool29 said, "always best to get yoru $ in as a 5/1 dog"What he doesnt understand is that I was basically on a blind steal. in a tournament hwen the blinds and antes get large, it pays off more to steal. Also there was a very tight player on the bb, and i raised with suited no gap connectors. It is also right near bubble time, which also tighens things up quite a bit. I happened to run into JJ who went all in over the top of my bet. Well, at this point i was getting over 4.1:1 on my call, and I must call. His 5:1 approximation is still way off however, its more like 3:1.so obviously, with a pot laying > 4:1, and having to call less than 3:1, what is the move here?its pretty damn simple folks.

how many of these tournaments do yall not cash out compared to the ones you do cash out? Several of you are constantly talking about these tournaments where you cash out $500+, and I was just wondering what is your ratio of that happening to you walking away with nothing
12/6/2005 6:45:57 AM
Its not so much about % in the money as it is ROI, or return on investment of your overal tournament experience. The real ROI doesnt come from limping into the money and busting immediately after the bubble. The real ROI boosts come from top three finishes. IF you really want to cash big in tournaments, youve got to take more chances, and bust more. Around bubble time is when I get 10x more active. Its a great time to grow a stack, the blinds/antes are large and the players are timid. Im not trying to limp inot the money, im trying to win the tournament.Sure I may talk about alot of big cashes, but I also play probably 20+ $20+ entry fee tournaments per week. Some weeks even more. Obviously you dont see me mentioning having busted 9 straight tournaments yesterday adn the day before, before going deep in that last one last night. Just depends on my other schedule. The new pokerstars 20+2 180 person sit and go's have been a great thing for me. The play is nuts like a turbo 4 table sit n go, but you have all the time you need.I shoot for about 30% ITM, and ideally would love over 200% ROI. MTT ROI sustainability is a very interesting topic actually. With the nature of the ridiculous varaince in proper mtt play, I dont think you could ever really be confident in your actual roi statistic. Even though online play allows for a possibility of maybe a few thousand tournaments per year, I sitll dont think this is enough to establish your true ROI. A full time, multitabling STTer may be able to, but the deviation of STTs is much smaller than MTTs. Statistically, it is still possible for a soid, winning player to be <100% ROI for mtts. On the other hand, Ive watched JonTurner play mtts online for a long time.I swear, that kid cashes in about every tournament I watch. Ive yet to read HOH, and am only about 10% of the way through with TPFAP, but after having read everything I can find on MTT forums on other webpages, my whole tournament theory has changed drastically. I used to just try and wait for big hands. Doing so, I lucked into a final table once over the course of 10 months. Recently Ive really started concentrating on tournament poker. Somehow ive been able to run into 6 final tables since Dec. 1st.Its been a ridiculous run that is absolutely unsustainable I think. (But I'd like to think otherwise )I forgot to also mention that you need to make sure that you dont play a bunch of MTTs underrolled or under prepared in what you are planning on doing. MTTs are a great way to blow a shitton of cash fast. For limit HE players it is suggested that you maintain at least a 300 big bet BR, but im more conservative and dont like to fall below 500. this is because of the massive number of hands i play online and mutitabling. The possibility of hitting a 5k hand downswing is entirely possible. As for STT BR, you could probably get by with a 75 buy in br, but that may be questionable. For full MTT play general consensus is a 100 x buyin (+entry fee) BR is necessary. I tend to think that this is a bit low, and like not to fall below a 200x buyin br. IF you are playing rebuys and addons, then this needs to be even higher. This is why I always satellite into the larger tournaments. If i dont make it in after spending no more than $70 in satelliete entry fees, then I stop trying to qualify for the 200+15 entry fee. ~30% of the full buy in is my limit. This also brings up an interesting situation I was thinking of walking to class today. You can use the 10R sats to the 200+15 sunday tournaments on stars for tournament entry fee dollars. These are transferable. Thre are sites that you can buy the $T from, for say 90% of face value. I should buy a shitton of this and save a few bucks in entry fee. That or what I was really thinking was to play every 10R sat that is offered to build up a $T bankroll. you can use the tournament dollars for any tournament. So ideally what I was thinking is that if you make a seat in your first try at a 10R for the 215 $T, use that for the next 10R for the same prize. you could basically freeroll up a nice $T bankroll if you are more than like 6:1 on your 10R results, which should be easily sustainable.[Edited on December 6, 2005 at 10:22 AM. Reason : $T]

Turner, When I come to Vegas in a few weeks I have an itch to play a tournament or two. Have you played the 300 at the wynn? Ive heard good things about this tournament, but would like some first hand advice. The 300 may be a bit higher than I had initially wanted to go, but I feel like taking a shot. Plus from what Ive seen online, it appears as if you start with a whole lot of chips with long blind times. (also, no rebuy/addons)Also, Ive heard that the bellagio runs single table sats to the $500 tournament. Is this true? Ive heard it was like a 10 handed $100 with top two getting seats to the $500 tournament. and thats a no rebuy/add on right (the 500)? I may try and do this also.Any suggestions as to like $100 tournaments we should try and check out? One of the guys comming with us wants to try out about a $100 no rebuy/add on tournament. He isnt too interested in plopping down for the $300 .We'll be staying at the mirage, but ive heard that the 8/16 and 15/30 lhe there can be some of the toughest games in the city. NoidRoid isnt too interested in limit obviously, so id like to find a place that has a nice juicy no limit games along with about a 6/12 -> 15/30 limit game for me to play too. You're pretty much right on with all the info about the tourneys... and yes, everyone agree's (based on the format) that the Wynn is the best regular one in town... they just changed it to 4 days a week too... tues - thurs ($300) and friday ($500)... all start at noon. There are some $50 - 150 tourneys daily around town, but the format in all of those is horrible. The Wynn however is an incredible format. You won't want to play any others (not even Bellagio)... believe me, stick with the Wynn. I forget what day your coming to town, but hopefully your trip will work out that you'll get to play a few of those.

not very much worse, but yeah, i think it is possible.I mean, he whiffed the fuck out of the flop, with his only low getting counterfeited right off the bat. and naked aces arent really something i'd fawn over in a limit o8 game. he could have bet the flop here. that would have been worse, but marginally. highly doubt if you would have folded your draw so early in the tournament, or ever for that matter. plus with any sort of a sembolance to the nut low, you or wxguy is calling everytime. he only loses money by betting this flop, which he didnt.most players in the lower limit omaha tournaments for some reason go apeshit bananas over aces. its the hold'em player in them throwing ill advised shit fits. its one of the things that makes a proficent omaha (hi or hi/lo) game such a valueable commodity in today's poker world.despite the fact that the board is wicked straight heavy, he still goes crazy on the river. sounds about right for a holdem player hitting a set of aces in omaha. did you put him on a ass backed into wheel?i do feel pretty confident however that you were pretty surprised to scoop this one with the worst possible low. oh yeah and about not raisnig preflop, its the idea of many low limit omaha people that are just starting to limp with marginally large hands to enormous hands, ie any a2 or aaxx, esp something like aa2x or aa3x in this example in order to not sare anyone else out of limping into a pot in order to build a big pot up. it doesnt make much sense in this case, but it happensa ll the damn time. This type of thing reminds me of a plo8 tournament i played on party one night, where as soon as the first hand was dealt...xxxx"why can i see four cards?"...."i dont know, this is weird"1st hand passes, including one of the above players capping iwth a 4 flush on board and a naked ace of that flush in his handxxxx"wtf was that?? why didnt i win that pot? wtf is a low?"makes for great, and easy tournaments.[Edited on December 9, 2005 at 7:50 AM.
