So I hate to be that guy, but I've only been following this sporadically for the last few years. Is there a TL;DR of the highlights of what's going on here? More importantly, is anything realistically going to happen to UNC because of all this? What are the odds that wins will be vacated/banners actually pulled down, etc? Is a formal investigation still ongoing, or is everything just playing out in the media/internet forums now. Is it safe to assume that UNC is going to get off scot free?

i'll put a board on the wall with various ways that a school can lie and cheat their way to banners and smugness.
you throw darts till your arm gets tired.

nothing remotely approaching what they actually deserve will happen, and it's possible that nothing falls on them.

IF anything happens, it won't be much. I mean, I'm obviously biased, but the level of bullshit they've pulled over the past 20+ years should land them the death penalty.

I don't even know where the NCAA is at the moment. UNC just sent their response to SACS who won't do shit. The Feds are apparently investigating them for possible Pell Grant fraud due to the shenanigans, but even if that's the case nothing will come of it.

Lot of moving parts. UNC says the classes for all intents and purposes may be fake, but they actually existed on paper, and unless SACS rules those classes void/invalid, the NCAA has no right to punish them.

The NCAA on the other hand, can look at the Weinstein Report and scourge through the details of all those fake classes. They'll try to determine how many of the athletes had their work done for them/had them plagiarized/ had their grades forged. And if it causes their GPA to go below a threshold, declare them ineligible and maybe vacate those wins.

If they do that, I could see the 2005 banner going down. 1993 is too far back, and by 2009 Roy had all his players clustered away from AFAM. What could get embarrassing for UNC is all the vacated victories in football, women's soccer, women's basketball etc. And what could really hurt them going forward would be lost scholarships, probation and post season bans. Tough to say, cause Emmert is a corrupt SOB, and there will be hectic negotiations in the background. College Sports is slimy.

The first time Carolina was audited by SACS they did say the classes were invalid. SACS told Carolina that people that were graduated already had to retake a class (as well as people currently there).

What will come of this a great precendent set and every other school will now feel invincible to cheating. If this sort of blatant cheating over decades isnt enough to bring down an entire athletic program then why the fuck would anyone else be worried about their small violations in comparison to this?

UNC will be forced to vacate all the wins, but then they'll apologize and give a few million to help end adult illiteracy and have the NCAA reinstate all their wins.

This is why they really kicked Ross to the curb after paying $600k a year:

Quote :
"Ross and UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt called in former federal prosecutor Kenneth Wainstein to investigate the breadth of the scandal, and Wainstein issued a report in October detailing how hundreds of student-athletes for 18 years were steered toward classes that didn't meet and required only a paper to pass."

Hell they are going to pay him $300k for a year while he is on "research leave"

Quote :
"He will take a year of "research leave" after stepping down at half of his final salary as president – he now earns $600,000 a year – and will then assume a tenured faculty position in the UNC School of Government in Chapel Hill, according to the terms of his employment contract."

I wonder how much more money UNC spent on this natural change in leadership with their already ~$1.7 Million tab with their current PR Firm. It seems awfully funny a Liberal Arts school spending so much money to save face. Don't they know how many wells they could dig in Africa for that much money + the other money spent below?

I actually didn't realize it had gone up so much from the old ~$800k tab (plus the $500k they had with two other firms) they had, to this: http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/11/18/4333832_firm-charging-unc-165-million.html?rh=1

Quote :
"A copy of the contract provided under a public records request shows Edelman will receive more than $1.65 million for public relations services over the period of a year, ending April 30, 2015. The contract is not specific as to what kinds of services the firm will provide, but UNC officials confirmed last month that at least 14 employees from the firm worked on the public release of former U.S. Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein’s report on the scandal.

UNC had previously spent roughly $500,000 combined on two other firms and a public relations consultant.

Just like the other public relations work, Edelman’s costs will not be covered with state funds or tuition dollars, UNC officials say."

So we are talking roughly $2.2 Million as of November last year and how much have the spent since?

By far the best part is they paid $3.1 Million for the Wainstein report: http://www.wral.com/unc-ch-paid-3-1m-for-academic-fraud-probe/14208530/

Quote :
"UNC President Tom Ross and UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Carolt Folt hired Wainstein early this year to provide an independent look at the scandal. According to the Oct. 31 invoice, Wainstein put more than 720 hours into the investigation.

Six associates and four paralegals at Wainstein's law firm, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, put a total of 4,184 hours into the investigation, according to the invoice. The bill for their and Wainstein's time came to almost $3 million, and the law firm charged UNC-Chapel Hill another $115,775 for expenses such as copying, postage and travel.

The invoice notes that the law firm provided a $60,000 discount on its services and wrote off another $68,662 in fees."

Don't worry Chapel Hill, you saved $128,662 though!

So they paid $3.1 Million to screw themselves (awesome) and then have paid $2.2 Million for simple PR on how to deflect what they paid $3.1 Million to tell everyone. This may go down as the most expensive self inflicted butt fuck ever. As of now on public documents that have been released we know they spent a bare min of $5.3 Million dollars between fucking themselves and trying to train faculty/select students on how to talk.

This just published 5 days ago shows they are bringing in ANOTHER legal team:

http://www.newsobserver.com/2015/01/13/4473722/unc-chapel-hill-hires-more-legal.html

Quote :
"Fitzgerald and others with the Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom law firm will charge an hourly rate of $990 per partner and a minimum of $450 per associate until the university determines it no longer needs the firm’s services, said Rick White, a UNC spokesman. He said there was no cap on how much the firm could charge and no limit on how long it would be working for UNC. A news release said three other attorneys in the firm were also expected to handle legal matters for UNC.

The academic scandal is now the subject of an NCAA investigation. UNC is paying another law firm with expertise in NCAA matters, Bond, Schoeneck & King, to help with that investigation.

As with Wainstein’s work, UNC officials said the Skadden firm’s bills will be covered by unrestricted funds from the university’s foundation. UNC said the governor and state attorney general have signed off on the legal work."

The Carolina Way is really starting to add up for these dumbasses... Surely they didn't think bringing in somebody they could not do a smear campaign on was going to come out well. Willingham told them the problem and they said what she had written was a travesty and she probably did it on her normal salary.

Quote :
"Travesty -

noun:
1. a false, absurd, or distorted representation of something.

verb:
1. represent in a false or distorted way."

Travesty sounds a lot like what they have paid ~$2.2 Million to their PR firms after Wainstein to produce for them in the public eye (failure, see SNL and Al Sharpton).

How much money does the "unrestricted funds from the university’s foundation" have available? Nothing is even close to being over when it comes to the NCAA or really even SACS and then you have the whole Federal Pell Grant fraud deal plus at least three outstanding lawsuits. If they have managed to spend over $5 Million as of now, I'm going to guess this will cost them at least $50 Million total when everything is over and done with. That would buy a lot of anti-malaria nets for African villagers! Al Sharpton would probably sign off on just $5 Million worth of anti-malaria nets. Come on you bleeding heart liberals, how much money are you going to spend. The real shit hasn't even happened yet. So far this has been UNC paying to expose themselves and then paying millions more to basically teach them how to speak without technically being dis-true.

TLDR Version: ~$5.3 Million self inflicted butt fuck with more spending on the way. Don't worry though, UNC says the governor and the state attorney general signed off on their latest spending for more legal help. If they managed to spend over $1.65 Million in one year on just the PR for Wainstein/NCAA/SACS/Lawsuits/Federal Pell Grant Fraud (that is an impressive year), how much are they going to spend when shit actually gets real? Then once the punishment is dealt out, depending on how bad, they will spend way more trying to regain their image of a "Prestigious University" How big is that Dean Smith/Michael Jordan honey jar?

I hope this is being fucking sarcastic. He might now be in charge of all of the UNC system, but make no mistake, UNC is the Flagship and he spends the majority of his time and energy in Chapel Hill and is not going to do anything to rock the boat where he lives and works. And he is not going to be leaving anytime soon. It wasn't even brought up today when I saw him.

I had this classic back & forth on TGD's facebook feed with someone who supposedly worked on the Wainstein report. She started off with UNC's company-line about "it was only one-one thousandth of the classes", and I couldn't help myself and chimed in. Don't worry about reading too far into it, you'll know where the funny is.

So, is it relevant that she 'helped write the report' (the INDEPENDENT REPORT)...

and yet she is/was a staff member at UNC?

LOL, wtf, what report is she talking about?

And her somehow helping "write" the report doesn't absolve her or the University of its misdeeds. Or answering the tough and humiliating questions that accompany it. They ran a bogus curriculum with forged grades for non existent classes for 2 decades. And lol at the NCCU analogy. It doesn't hold a candle to the what happened at Chapel HILl
