My favorite part in Bigger, Stronger, Faster is when the clarinet guy says it isn't right for baseball players to take steroids because it is unfair to the other players but he says it is ok for him to take beta blockers for him to land a gig playing the fucking clarinet or something like that. Hypocrite.

when I go looking for advice, I don't want to listen to people that don't have results to show for their actions.

For shin splints, soleus tendon stretches work wonders. So do massages and lots of milk.
7/7/2011 10:54:21 AM
iirc he's a personal trainer.to me, having a personal trainer give advice for free on a message board is pretty sweet.we're all adults here. we can pay attention to what we want to, and not what we dont.this thread can be many things. trying to condense into one thread is difficult. there are countless entire forums out there for this type of thing, but for some reason this one interests me more, b/c of some weird internet personality associations makes it more real. this is basically the only thread i read on tww anymore, and i barely even participate.
7/7/2011 10:54:49 AM
i swear there is another thread for soliciting such adviceif i starve myself for 3 weeks to get my six pack so i can go to the beach so be it son!that bein said, im fat as shit right now lol[Edited on July 7, 2011 at 10:59 AM. Reason : f]

Back on topic, does anyone know the reason for basically the same machine causing you to lift +/- 25 lbs different than others? For the first time I went to lift up on the 3rd floor at the Carmichael Rec Center, and all those machines are a lot newer than in the main gym. For whatever reason, I could curl like 20 lbs more, but had to do about 30 lbs less on the lateral press, etc.. I actually like those a lot more, but now I have to readjust what I'm lifting.

i mean i dont know what to say, exept that depends on the system of pulleys and shit they use to manipulate the weight you pulli think alot of these machines give you the resistance equivalancies on the label.

Has he and the other trainers given great advice? Sure. Its been extremely helpful. Some people may just glaze over the very indepth science, but the overall message is beneficial. However, the fact that he has physical results becomes moot once he admits that he uses drugs to achieve his goals, and calls into question how effective the rest of his training is. If some powerlifter in here was touting a much different plan that allegedly achieved high weights, but then admitted to steroid use, then the readers are going to think "well maybe his high weights are just due to the roids." Same thing with weight loss drugs. If another user came in here touting a huge weight loss while dieting and exercising, then revealed they had gastric bypass surgery, which do you think caused the weight loss? Drastic external influences apart from just diet and exercise decreases the overall credibility of the message. If I had to choose between two physical trainers based solely on their physical appearance, one who used drugs and another who didn't use any, I would go with the clean trainer. I think that goes for a lot of beginning fitness readers in here as well.

at this point in the thread, people know what their goals are. if you're one of those people - then pull out the advice and situations from this thread that suit it.my goals do not include getting down to 8% body fat (i don't think that i'm physically capable of getting that low) so therefore, the posts that have to do with that i'm just not going to take into consideration.perhaps that's the best idea for others ....oh and just as a refresher:

i am strongly against drugs period. I hesitate to call anyone that advocates their use as part of a training regimine a personal trainerno disrespect to your career or anything, but thats just my opinion and certainly that stance is not one that we all should drop everything and heed as Gospelfuck that. its poison and if it were actually a regulated drug youd be fraudulently prescribing treatment. luckily for you its not regulated by shit so you can say whatever the fuck you want.

my goals:to look good in a bikini and not be terribly embarrassed.I want to weigh at 145, I'm 5'71/2" and I'm 155 right nowI want to be able to run a 5k without having to stop to walk. right now I'm about 60% there, much better than when I started, my avg pace is 14:50 mil/min down from 17:11 when I started. Which brings me to my big goal:I really want to be as close to being a fit runner so that I can be a coach for Girls on the Run/ Girls on Track this fall.

i dont really drink coffee much but i do consume sodas but i guess its a foodstuff thats just my opinion, you can always get super hardcore about it. i havent fully formulated a total opinion but for arguments sake you have a pointbut then again, i wouldnt use coffee to get a caffeine jolt, i avoid relying on "jolts" but thats a separate issue[Edited on July 7, 2011 at 12:44 PM. are you using couch to 5k or some other program?

Went out of my comfort zone today:Squatted to a low box without my briefs and really felt the difference in my groin and hamstrings. Later, as I did hamstrings, I didn't have the ass support and now I walk funny for a few days, I guess. For you runners, dimel Deadlifts are a great way to increase your speed by nailing your hip flexors. As for roids, I would take them if they were readily available. But I don't have the time or desire to illegally get an Rx for a hormonal imbalance. I don't care if people use them, I would if I could. But I don't.

what % of 1RM would you suggest for a 20 rep dimmel dead set?

Horizontal Press day:Power Circuit: Depth Push Ups 4x4 + Pistol Squats 4x1 + MB Slams 4x4*Bench Press 160lbs 5x8+ (Got 15 reps on the last set)*Weighted Dips +90lbs 3x51arm 90#db rows 3x10JM Presses + Reverse DB Flys 3x8*Chin Ups x 3 every set.Strength endurance is up a bit from the weight gain. Can't wait to test my limit strength in a couple months once I push my intensity up a bit..

For dimels, I like about 40-45 of your "brute" Deadlift. Thats about 15 reps for me. You can really tell the difference when you're running uphill.

this might be a stupid question - and is probably solved by just being better hydrated - but i feel like i cannot breathe in this humidity and heat. i'm running at like 8pm and the first two miles are brutal - slowing me up significantly.anybody have any tricks? or do i just need to suck it up
7/7/2011 9:09:07 PM
1. Wake up early.2. Go run......8. Profit.
7/7/2011 9:20:15 PM
yeah I think I'm going to have to start running in the early mornings to beat the humidity. I run with water but it's getting harder to face this humidity in the evenings
7/7/2011 9:41:18 PM
7/7/2011 10:20:33 PM
I have finally become accustomed to the humidity and heat. I usually run at 3:30-4:00pm and it took a really long time to get used to it. Normally I do HIIT prior and I am so hot and sweaty that when I step outside I think "well this isn't TOO bad" and then I start running I have scaled back some just to 2 miles a day because of the high intensity stuff I am doing. Oh and I never bring a water bottle with me. I hydrate like crazy throughout the day (about 3 liters of water before 4pm) and I find I run better when I am not carrying a water bottle around.
