I have a friend from work who does not like beer. He lives in clayton so he is used to Bud Light and Natty Light being the only options. I have been bringing him craft beers for a few months to figure out what he likes. I finally stuck a chord with Shotgun Betty. I am not much of a hefeweizen drinker so I need some suggestions on other good stuff to get him to try. He also kinda liked Blanco Diablo.
9/24/2012 3:51:09 PM
Had Hop City's Happy hour last night. Surprisingly hoppy and citrusy for an apa
9/24/2012 3:57:52 PM
^^Sierra Nevada Kellerweis is probably my favorite among seasonal or year round hefeweizen. It's readily available. the banana/clove flavors are a little stronger than Shotgun Betty. it would be a good marker to determine what he really likes about this particular style of beer. If Kellerweis doesn't please him you may look into something like the Blanco Diablo or other witbiers that are a little lighter and don't have the esters and phenol flavors.Wheat Beers: SN Kellerweis, Paulaner hefe, Franziskaner, even North Coast Blue StarBelgian Wit Beers: Allagash White, Hoegaarden, Blanco Diablo]
9/24/2012 3:59:24 PM
I'd tell you to get him some Starr Hill "The Love" but he'd probably call it a girl beer.
9/24/2012 4:10:44 PM
He wouldn't care if it is "girl beer". For a while all I could get him to drink were fruit beers.

Yea, they always have a good lineup, those one's written in chalk are from their new 7bbl "experimental" system they're using for new recipes.BTW, I live like 2-miles from there [Edited on September 24, 2012 at 11:43 PM. Reason : .]

hey ive never had blabaer. had a homebrewed blueberry lambic fermented with harvested blabaer dregs, but that's as close as i've gotten.but i wanted a blueberry -> blueberry to keep the comparison legit. (ok ill give you there's a difference in style. but still. "fruit beer")rather it be one's i've had?rather i say magic hat #9 to fou'founne? apricot to apricot?liendeman's kriek to drie fonteinen schaerbeekse kriek ? still represents the range of shitty -> the tits (allegedly).[Edited on September 25, 2012 at 9:44 AM. haha yeah, i think the gf and i may ride over for that.i'm interested to see what size crowd an NG event will bring.i picked up a sixer of Lagunitas Daytime Fractional IPA. was getting a little bored with seasonals/pumpkins and needed something to mix it up. What a great session IPA. I love lagunitas but they're always a brewery i pass over. it's like the "they'll always be there, so i don't need it now" type thought. but i was really impressed. I'd like to do a side by side of all the session IPAs ]
9/26/2012 11:09:01 AM
When I went to the Pumpkin Beer tasting at CM in South End, there wasn't a big crowd to be honest. I wasn't complaining, because that made it easier to go through a 2nd time and get the Pumpking on draft...
9/26/2012 11:29:26 AM
man i can't wait for Lagunitas Sucks to be year-round.
9/26/2012 11:42:19 AM

is "american sour" just another way to say american wild?or is this some style i'm not aware of
9/26/2012 12:07:08 PM
What is Salud and where do I get some delicious Old Chub?
9/26/2012 12:51:28 PM
^^basically they took their Buckshot Amber Ale and refermented it with wild yeast and then aged it in barrels for two years (or so they say).^Salud is the bottle shop in NoDa. They have a handful of taps and do weekly tastings as well. They probably have Old Chub

Depends on who you ask.GABF uses BJCP (as well as all AHA homebrew competitions)http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style17.php doesn't recognize American sour/wilds as different than what's already out there, but the Brewer's Association does.World Beer Cup uses Brewer's Association Style Guidelines:http://www.brewersassociation.org/attachments/0000/7526/2012_BA_Beer_Styles_Final.pdfHas these two additional categories:Category 18: American-Style Sour AleCategory 19: American-Style Brett AleAmerican-Style Brett Ale American Brett ales can be very light to black or take on the color of added fruits or other ingredients. Wood- and barrel- aged sour ales are classified elsewhere. The evolution of natural acidity develops balanced complexity. Horsey, goaty, leathery, phenolic and light to moderate and/or fruity acidic character evolved from Brettanomyces organisms may be evident, yet in balance with other character. Acidity may also be contributed to by bacteria, but may or may not dominate. Residual flavors that come from liquids previously aged in a barrel such as bourbon or sherry should not be present. Wood vessels may be used during the fermentation and aging process, but wood-derived flavors such as vanillin must not be present. In darker versions, roasted malt, caramel-like and chocolate-like characters should be subtle in both flavor and aroma. American Brett ales may have evident full range of hop aroma and hop bitterness with a full range of body. Estery and fruity-ester characters are evident, sometimes moderate and sometimes intense, yet balanced. Diacetyl and sweet corn-like dimethylsulfide (DMS) should not be perceived. Chill haze, bacteria and yeast-induced haze are allowable at low to medium levels at any temperature. bottles #14 and 16 of 240. I'm not usually big on NG, but this was a very well done sour ale by them. and the brewmaster and reps were very nice and social last night.

Headed to Oktoberfest in Denver again... love the fact it's 2-weekends in a row. Got a Bruery Oude Tart, Cuvee Delphine and Cigar City Big Sound Scotch Ale I'll probably open this weekend.

^I drank a Foothills BBL People's Porter last night, that was about it.traded a BASC for a CCB Hunahpu and a Central Waters BBL Barleywine this morning with a regular at my gf's bar. he "needed to get the bottle today", come to find out he was using it as a trade anchor he was shipping out this afternoon.
9/29/2012 11:45:18 AM
First time drinking this beer. Thought the name was funny. I like it.
9/30/2012 7:35:45 PM
Finally getting around to this one:Actually went in with low expectations...and it's not that bad. Just a little too smokey. Feel like I inhaled a little too much smoke around a campfire. I don't mind that in a porter/stout...but a bit much for an ale.
9/30/2012 8:19:44 PM
Yeah the nose was awesome, but after that it was liquid smoke. I drank Blue Mountain Local Species, was pretty decent.

Full Nelson Pale Ale is delicious. It should be hitting all of NC along with the rest of Blue Mountain. I was able to get a case from my gf's boss and I love it. 5.9% but goes down like an easy session beer. Hops are VA grown Cascade, with VA mountain water. this beer has jumped up to my favorites list for easy drinkers. The Autumnal Mole is nice, not as hot as the label makes it seem. has some nice spice notes, a little thin, but overall a good beer.and Centennial, always a classic. i picked these up to make the Founders Beer Cheese Soup.
10/1/2012 10:36:28 AM
I have been holding off on fall beers till this weekend. I picked up the Sam Adams harvest collection and have been pretty disappointed so far. The Harvest Pumpkin isn't bad but is a little too heavy on the pumpkin pie spice flavors. The Latitude 48 IPA tasted like they used hops concentrate out of a bottle or something. It also had an unpleasantly peppery aftertaste. I haven't tried the others yet.
10/1/2012 10:45:02 AM
Got a growler of Centennial when I was in Athens for a UGA game. It's really wonderful on tap.
