62 years of academic fraud

http://www.wral.com/refusal-to-disclose-names-of-those-disciplined-after-unc-ch-fraud-probe-prompts-lawsuit/14209317/en media organizations, including Capitol Broadcasting Co., the parent company of WRAL News, filed suit Monday to obtain the names of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill faculty and staff who were fired or disciplined in the wake of an outside investigation into academic fraud at the school.Former federal prosecutor Kenneth Wainstein released a 131-page report on Oct. 22 that showed academic advisers steered student-athletes for 18 years toward classes that never met and required only a short paper to pass.Read more at http://www.wral.com/refusal-to-disclose-names-of-those-disciplined-after-unc-ch-fraud-probe-prompts-lawsuit/14209317/#uE1HgQradwpuMRHQ.99

I know it's a typo, but I like the humor of a UNC administrator saying they had to go to North Carolina Central to see how they did things.
11/24/2014 2:59:11 PM
That isn't a typo according to the emails that were quoted from dubcaps on Page 61 (first post)I never bothered to verify them since he quoted them all.--------------------------------------^^Now that article is hilarious, it is basically the gist of everything that is UNC. What they say and what they actually do are polar opposites and now is the definition of "The Carolina Way".Here is the best breakdown of what the article says using only quotations:---------------------------------------------"Under North Carolina's public records law, the date and reason for any demotion, suspension or dismissal of a state employee must be available for public inspection."UNC:"Folt herself mentioned integrity and accountability during a news conference after Wainstein released his report."Academic freedom does not mean freedom from accountability. Instead, I believe very strongly that we have to hold each other accountable," she said. "We do this because integrity of the university is owned by all of us.""Mike Tadych:Raleigh attorney Mike Tadych, who is representing the media coalition in the lawsuit, said that, even with pending appeals, the state public records law pulls back the curtain on terminations, suspensions and demotions."It's our university. We should have the right to know what happened or didn't happen," Tadych said.UNC:UNC officials declined to comment on the lawsuit, which names Folt and Vice Chancellor for Workforce Strategy, Equity and Engagement Felicia Washington as defendants. The suit seeks a court order declaring the actions taken against the nine employees to be public records and compelling the immediate release of the information.---------------------------------------This makes the 3rd lawsuit against UNC since the Wainstein report came out. Obviously these are completely separate from anything the NCAA or SACS is doing.[Edited on November 24, 2014 at 3:42 PM. Reason : lol]

I saw another article that said it was $25,000+ worth of damage. And Fedora has already said they won't be disciplining anyone for it.[Edited on November 24, 2014 at 3:48 PM. Reason : http://www.heraldsun.com/news/blog/x761893770/UNC-celebration-damages-Duke-locker-room]
11/24/2014 3:47:33 PM
With all the scrutiny they are under, how did they not realize that spray painting the lockeroom was a bad idea?
11/24/2014 3:58:21 PM
^^Hard to punish players when its pretty obvious that coaches would have been witnessing all this and presumably allowing it to continue. So he didn't find out about it until Friday, despite being in the locker room? Or was he ever in the locker room? Kind of like the thing with the bitch boy WR that got gang assaulted... Fedora claimed he had no idea about it until weeks later
11/24/2014 4:08:25 PM
^ even he can see the problems here...
11/24/2014 4:09:15 PM
Maybe they thought this would pull attention away from everything else?? haha If someone sat me down say 5-10 years ago and asked me to list the worst things I wanted to happen to UNC, there is no way in hell I could have come up with anything near what has actually happened. It is like Christmas every few days, lol.The real question is will the UNC players get credit hours for Art 101?[Edited on November 24, 2014 at 4:25 PM. Reason : _]

I don't really care if any players get suspended or not. But I thought Fedora seemed to just shrug it off. He could've and probably should've at least feigned anger and been like "we're looking into the matter and will deal with it internally". Instead he says he apologized to Cut and there will be no disciplinary action. Maybe I'm being biased in how I look at this, though.
11/24/2014 9:04:41 PM
meh who gives a shit if they got spraypaint around the shitty ass locker room they have for visitors? pay up and move on
11/24/2014 9:31:38 PM
i don't recall ever hearing about a visiting team vandalizing a borrowed locker-room. (i am aware of a team vandalizing a borrowed field)is this a case of the media sensationalizing a story? or is this a somewhat unique incident?and i assume the coaching staff had to be aware of it as it was occurring.

When I was at app one of our guys kicked a hole in some sheetrock because he was mad.. Definitely an accident and not a huge deal (as far as $ to repair it) but I'm sure stuff happens pretty frequently. Probably not with spray paint and that level of damage if the numbers are actually close[Edited on November 24, 2014 at 9:54 PM. Reason : @FSU.. Baseball.. ]
11/24/2014 9:54:07 PM
^^Didn't they say it was like $10K in damages? That seems excessive to me...and more than maybe a couple holes in the wall or whatever.
11/24/2014 10:04:09 PM
So one of the guys on PackPride basically got confirmation that the US Dept. of Education has launched an investigation into UNC's shit-pie of academic shenanigans. They are looking into the allegations of Pell Grant fraud, detailed in the emails from Jan Boxill that described creating BS classes for kids so that they could become eligible for their Pell Grant checks. Not much in that letter but the dude followed up with them and they confirmed that there is an ongoing investigation. If this gets rolling, then there is absolutely nothing UNC can do to control that narrative
11/24/2014 10:07:03 PM
ha ha ha - I was wondering if the feds would ever get involved on that angleThat's fantastic. They do not fuck around when it comes to pell grants.

this girl in my lab that's from state college, pa and really into defending penn state football, which makes me sincerely want to punch her in the face, was giving her routine but in defense on unc (i think she's trying to compare the two as both problems of "the deification of college sports", a phrase she wouldn't stop using god what a bitch, to feel better about her hometown), and last night she's like "what? should all of these people who weren't involved in this be punished? should they really have to give out less scholarships b/c of what a few people did?"so just remember unc, penn state has your back.
11/25/2014 9:12:29 PM
The more "sensible" Penn State fans would rather have their pound of flesh. Much like fans of Duke, Kentucky, UConn, Kansas etc
11/25/2014 10:25:32 PM
When they make the ESPN 30 for 30 on this I hope they just call it "The Carolina Way".
11/26/2014 2:25:08 PM
I was reading trying to find some hard evidence on the Federal Investigation regarding Pell Grant fraud and I landed on a Kentucky board that says this:

ESPN can't stop talking about "The Butler Way" todayFirst time I've ever heard the phrase, but Jay Williams and Seth Greenberg sure love talking about it

11/26/2014 7:20:32 PM
I was just talking to a friend's roommate who's a UNC fan (not a unc grad), and he had nothing to say other than "I just think the exact same thing happens at every other school"
11/26/2014 9:24:22 PM
What is this new information that I keep seeing about that does the classes went back to the 80's???
11/27/2014 12:17:25 PM
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=178&f=2515&t=13411203Guy went through the Wainstein report and pulled the raw numbers out into some charts. Shows the AFAM angle started with mens BBall back in 1989, very clearly only benefited them for a few years then football caught on.The normalized chart takes a shit on all the UNC PR-Spin that sort of shifts the focus off of basketball. You can see that normalized on the number of scholarships per sport, basketball was by far the leading culprit:[Edited on November 27, 2014 at 12:38 PM. Reason : csa]
11/27/2014 12:36:38 PM
So has someone come forward to state that Chapel Hill doing federal fraud with Pell Grants is due to the strain put on athletes?
11/27/2014 9:48:07 PM
^^ holy shit, if that is even close to accurate it completely goes against everything the general public thinks. They made it sound like football was the sole player and basketball players just sort of "landed" in those classes with isolated cases (minus the 2005 team). That shows basketball as the leading reason these classes even exist/ed.I would like to see the raw data that made the chart, the numbers always speak louder. For example give us a total tally on basketball vs. football over the 18 years.By the way, a friend of mine who is a UNC graduate (as is his wife) in 2009 said that he was forced to take an AFAM course, his major was Nursing (lol). So how many majors require an elective that falls into the AFAM category?
