ok...damn, I haven't gotten the OTA yet? you just just check the firmware update right?
8/3/2010 9:20:35 AM
Menu > Settings > System Updates > HTC Software update is where I found it
8/3/2010 9:30:31 AM
If it doesn't show up for you, change your date forward two weeks and it will be there for sure.
8/3/2010 9:50:52 AM
first thing i've noticed is you can rotate to landscape by clockwise now (in addition to counter clockwise). that was always kinda annoying.touchscreen appears to be more sensitive(or at least it's more accurate for me on this site)hey how are we supposed to search our email? i've dug around some, but can't seem to find it.]
8/3/2010 10:04:36 AM
just press the search key (EVO right?). within Gmail the search only applies to your mail.
8/3/2010 10:47:55 AM
Or launch Gmail and hit the menu button.
8/3/2010 11:29:22 AM
Do you guys use GMail or HTC Mail?
8/3/2010 11:31:25 AM
Gmail is far superior than the default mail imho. And Swype (http://www.swypeinc.com/) is a must have too.
8/3/2010 11:38:18 AM
I haven't used swype since I rooted. Is it still beta?
8/3/2010 11:50:24 AM
Random question. Someone at work asked me this question this morning since they knew I had been looking at phones recently. However I really didn't know how to answer them at all. They saw a local wireless company that lists unlimited talk/text/data for $49.99 a month for 1 year contracts and unlimited talk/text/data for $39.99 for 2 year contracts. They were asking me why they should even consider Verizon or AT&T etc. when comparing their prices to this local company. I really have never looked into those small local carriers so I didn't have a good answer to help them decide.I assumed for these small carriers that you'll get hit with stuff like roaming etc. that is pretty much never a problem anymore on the national networks but I didn't want to say something incorrect. Anyone know what he should watch out for in these local wireless companies? (I've never even heard of the company he told me about, and I can't remember the name off the top of my head).
8/3/2010 12:09:56 PM
^^ It is still in Beta, but it rocks. You can request an invite at their site and it usually shows up in a day or two. It is insanely fast and was created by the same guy that made T9 predictive text.
8/3/2010 12:11:43 PM
I mean I've had a beta account for a while, I just haven't reinstalled. For a while I thought I couldn't live without it, but HTC's keyboard is pretty damn nifty as well.
8/3/2010 12:22:09 PM
^^^This probably isn't the right thread for it but anyway, IMO the phones on those local carriers usually suck. I would be surprised to see an Android phone on Cricket or one of those. But the biggest problem I think is usually reception. Some of them (Boost mobile for example) piggyback on other carriers networks so reception wouldn't be a problem. Also, I imagine data transfer on those carriers would suck (if it's even available).
8/3/2010 2:31:57 PM
yea that's what I figured. And yea I know it isn't the right thread but I didn't want to start a brand new thread just for that since it wasn't info for me, just info that I would pass along to a co-worker if anyone had any insight.Thanks.

you know, aside from the processor, bump in ROM/RAM, and 802.11n, the "Droid 2" isn't much hardware different than the Droidi have Swype, DVD capture, Wifi Hotspot, & 2.2 with my rooted Droid[Edited on August 3, 2010 at 2:55 PM. Reason : .]
8/3/2010 2:54:41 PM
yeah, aside from having to have the newest device, I'm not seeing a reason for current droid owners to go with the Droid 2 especially if you're rooted and overclocked. The keyboard isn't really improved enough to go with the Droid 2 and the performance gap between the upgraded processor and memory is pretty narrow compared to a droid with a custom rom. I'll probably look at the fascinate when verizon releases it but think I'm pretty much set on waiting til Verizon gets their LTE rolled out in Raleigh/Wilmington and offers and LTE Android.
8/3/2010 3:21:59 PM
swype isn't working for me. only if i tap out the letters.
8/3/2010 3:31:47 PM
^ sounds like you've probably got an expired version. The swiping stops working when it expires.

Droid Froyo update for anyone who doesn't want to wait for the OTAhttp://www.droid-life.com/2010/08/03/manual-android-2-2-update-for-motorola-droid/
8/3/2010 4:42:55 PM
^Change your phone's date to August 17, 2010 and check for a Firmware Update. You can get Froyo OTA once you do that...
8/3/2010 4:44:19 PM
Reason for not including Wifi tethering on the Droid 2.2 update:
8/3/2010 5:54:57 PM
yeah, that was mentioned yesterday and is probably why they could never get the integrated mobile hot spot to work on the Froyo leaks. Still doesn't explain why they couldn't include usb tether though.]
8/3/2010 6:01:02 PM
my X gets delivered tomorrow .... can't wait

Froyo manually loaded... damn thing is a bit slow right now. I assume because it's doing a lot of syncing.

A new facebook app is available, v1.3. It has a recent photo stream section and notifications bar on the home screen. There's still no fb "chat" option but that may be a good thing depending on some of your friends, heh.[Edited on August 3, 2010 at 11:12 PM. Reason : sdfgasdg]

The aim app has built in Facebook Chat. Not really much help if you don't use aim though.

i didn't want to chat with you anyway!

So, I am 1year into my 2year contract with VZW they are letting me upgrade if I sign a new 2year contract. Is it worth it? I would either get a Droid X or a Droid 2? Which is better?Or are there better phones coming out within the next year for VZW? When are LTE phones due out?Switching carriers is not an option.
8/4/2010 9:13:12 AM
how the heck did you pull that off? normally, they won't let you "extend" your contract to get into a new phone like that. it's usually after 18 mos. into a 24mo. commitment.
8/4/2010 9:17:21 AM
im doing the same thing ... as i posted earlier they sent me a flyer in the mail saying i could upgrade early with the discounted prices for a new 2 yr agreementi just get a new 2 years started from today (when i activate it when it arrives)i have 10 months until the new every two thing would be in effect, when i called to order the X, i remember them saying that since they had a lot of new phones coming out that they wanted to give me a chance to take advantage[Edited on August 4, 2010 at 9:25 AM. 8/4/2010 9:39:08 AM
^^ did they give you any other details about how/why you were getting to upgrade? i have 8 months left myself, and the Droid X is looking pretty nice.
8/4/2010 10:10:08 AM
I was 11 months from an upgrade, and I just emailed them from thier website. Someone from the local store called me a day later and said they had processed an upgrade request and I could come by and pick out a new phone whenever I wanted.I even set an appointment with the person, walked in and they had everything I had asked for all set up and ready to check out.Was a pretty good customer service experience. The place was packed busy too (launch day for the incredible), so it was doubly suprising the took the time out to help me personally and not make me wait in line.
8/4/2010 10:21:46 AM
^^ I installed it over the 2.2 Lithium Mod rom I was running and everything went fine. It took about 5 min to boot up the but that's normal with flashing some of the new roms.
8/4/2010 10:22:37 AM
Optimum, what's your current phone?I dunno if that has anything to do w/ it but i upgraded to a BB Tour last September. Normally I throw away ad-flyers, but i had my eye on the X for a while and looked at THAT flyer lolif you want, you can call the same number and just act like you got a flyer, if you didnt lolit was 1-877-492-9991
8/4/2010 10:28:33 AM
I got a BB Tour in like September of last year, and hated it. I hated it enough to pay full price for a Droid the morning they went on sale in November.
8/4/2010 11:15:00 AM
hmm well try to call them and do that thing where you fool them into thinking you got a upgrade flyer
8/4/2010 11:29:18 AM
I'm sure they have the accounts flagged for upgrades if they sent flyers but who knows.http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/04/npd-android-is-now-top-selling-os-in-american-smartphones/

Haters gonna...jailbreak?
8/4/2010 11:48:50 AM
Ok, I've now rooted my droidX. How do I open the bootloader on startup to load roms? I can only seem to find droid instructions, and my DX doesn't have an X key
