a guy from zionsville, indiana is unlikely to covet the duke job above all others, and very likely to hold out for the IU job.[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 8:34 PM. Reason : this is so dumb, i shouldn't participate in this.][Edited on March 26, 2011 at 8:35 PM. Reason : and you know what? fuck it, i'd hire archie miller.]
3/26/2011 8:34:26 PM
Thats where i am... he's a stickler for the free throw and has a better mind for the game then he does body.
3/26/2011 8:38:16 PM
he is more likely to be the head coach at duke at some point in the future than the head coach at nc state.[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 8:39 PM. Reason : i fully believe he is holding out for IU, but if K retired tomorrow and they asked, he would go.]
3/26/2011 8:38:48 PM
^ thats like if jesus retired tomorrow and asked me to take over.... seriously don't be a retard.
3/26/2011 8:43:59 PM
yeah man that's relevant.oops, no it's not, coach k isn't retiring tomorrow.
3/26/2011 8:44:19 PM
Of the dream candidates Stevens is the only one who hasn't publically semi rejected us so far.
3/26/2011 8:45:08 PM
phil jackson hasn't rejected us yet either! maybe he is coming!
3/26/2011 8:46:16 PM
your public semi rejections may only be to solidify their relationships and crush rumors... I'm telling you we're not officially asking anyone until they are done with the tournament.
3/26/2011 8:50:42 PM
Alright, let the formal talkings begin...
3/26/2011 9:16:54 PM
on a plane to raleigh right now
3/26/2011 9:17:42 PM
Ring ring ring.
3/26/2011 9:17:57 PM
3/26/2011 9:19:08 PM
I don't buy the whole "His dad said he's not coming" thing about Sean Miller, and I don't believe this "he just re-upped with Arizona" nonsense either. They're talking about putting 300k in an annuity for him for every year that he stays... big whoop. Everyone seems to forget that:1. The next coach that comes here will have a good percentage of his salary paid by whatever Athletic company wins the RFP to outfit us. Arizona's already a Nike school and has been for years. Nike's not going to give them more money just because their coach is doing well. Nike's going to look out for their own best interests and pay money to a school that isn't already a Nike school in order to welcome them into the fold. The main reason Nike didn't stick around during the Amato years was because of Lee Fowler's ineptitude and inability to drop Adidas for basketball like a bad fucking habit.2. We have donors who make money in gobs and who will pour money out of their asshole to get us back to national prominence. Jim Goodknight - rumored to be willing to pay half of the coach's salary himself, Wendell Murphy and Lonnie Poole, plus a few others. 300k a year for an annuity ain't shit between those guys. 3. If the money that was being talked about was the real amount, then he'd be a fool to put himself out of play for that. 3.2 million a year puts any coach in the country in a top 5, if not top 3 position.4. He'd be in a top 3 position in the ACC immediately, and he'd have the ability to become the coach of the dominant program in 6-8 years when both Roy and K retire. If Arizona did offer up some money, that's great. Doesn't mean that we won't pull out all the stops to match it or BETTER it, leaving them up the creek without a paddle. Some statement from his dad does not automatically rule him out of the job.[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 9:27 PM. Reason : .]
3/26/2011 9:20:32 PM
^sensible post.Full court press, debbie
3/26/2011 9:23:18 PM
if that's the case, he's a good backup plan if phil jackson says no.
3/26/2011 9:23:32 PM
fyi its my understanding that jim goodnight does not donate to the athletics programs
3/26/2011 9:25:26 PM
kjdn ftw....[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 9:26 PM. Reason : .]
3/26/2011 9:25:29 PM
Where does this 3.2 million figure come from?
3/26/2011 9:26:44 PM
and I thought kiljadn was just here for the soccer
3/26/2011 9:28:28 PM
I always heard that Goodnight would only donate to academic destinations
3/26/2011 9:31:37 PM
It's been repeated by a lot of sportswriters who can't seem to believe it.It's more than both Coach K and Bill Self's salaries, and honestly I think it's the number that we need to get a good, solid coach to get this program back to the National stage. You have to spend money to make money, and I think everyone involved now at the top level in our school understands that.3.2 million a year Coach + National TV exposure time would reap benefits immediately. Merchandising, increased enrollment numbers, increased ad revenue. It's a VERY small price to pay considering the potential windfalls.
3/26/2011 9:31:54 PM
Considering salaries mostly rely on donors who won't make money no matter how well the program does, it is mostly about bragging rights.
3/26/2011 9:40:10 PM
^ see my edit. JG would stand to benefit immediately given his line of work and intimacy with the University.
3/26/2011 9:42:16 PM
3/26/2011 9:42:25 PM
I'm sorry, but Swaim seems like a speculatory hack to me. Either that, or very massively short-sighted.
3/26/2011 9:44:37 PM
Yeah, wasn't he the one saying that Sean Miller was coming to State?
3/26/2011 9:48:48 PM
I believe Smart's first choice is NCSU, but Smart is not NCSU's first choice.[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 9:50 PM. Reason : yes, before they beat the dogshit out of duke.]
3/26/2011 9:50:24 PM
^^ yep, and he was the one who said 3.2 million. One of the ones, at least. Then he turns around and acts like a 300k annuity isn't something Wendell Murphy shits out after his morning coffee.
3/26/2011 9:52:35 PM
when he bought our house a decade ago it was pretty well known that goodnight only gave to academics, I never asked him myself, but thats pretty much the word[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 9:57 PM. Reason : but that was 10 years ago]
3/26/2011 9:56:27 PM
lol this thread and the SFN thread are both at 61 pages right now
3/26/2011 10:01:44 PM

wrong tab...oops[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 10:08 PM. Reason : .]
3/26/2011 10:08:27 PM
Which is funny because Goodnight is highly successful because of NCSU
3/26/2011 10:09:06 PM
3/26/2011 10:10:31 PM
Good posts kiljadn...but damn you for giving me a tiny bit of hope for Miller again
3/26/2011 10:12:45 PM
^
3/26/2011 10:23:05 PM
so everyone believed this swaim guy when he said we had a good shot at getting miller but now that he says we don't, no one believes him
3/26/2011 10:40:54 PM
what's the saying?people tend to believe what they want to believe.or something to that effect.
3/26/2011 10:42:40 PM
now that stevens has reached two final fours with butler, the idea of him coming here is absolute lunacy, he already has that program to an elite level so it makes no sense, the only way he'll leave is for a top 5 program years from now
3/26/2011 10:53:15 PM
Elite level program perhaps, but does Butler have elite level money? But it does remind me of the Calipari situation, where he took a mid-major to elite status and stayed there until a top 5 program came after him.[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 11:11 PM. Reason : ]
3/26/2011 11:11:27 PM
I dunno man ... throw a 10 year, 3 mill contract at a guy like that ...Lots of incentive to move now. Dude gets the best out of his players. Would be a steal, but you have to throw the package at him and see what happens (same for miller, really). As for Miller, I think pops wanted to get a bug in the ear about giving Archie a chance, and see what came out of it. I really don't think Miller is a dead "NO" yet ... but the posturing supports that he's probably super close it.[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 11:14 PM. Reason : .]
3/26/2011 11:12:31 PM
it's hard for me to compare it to Calipari, he had already had his time at UMass + the NJ Nets before going to Memphis
3/26/2011 11:13:30 PM
We're not getting Brad Stevens. Seriously, you are delusional if you think we are.
3/26/2011 11:16:57 PM
Have we hired Sean Miller yet? what's the hold-up?
3/26/2011 11:22:15 PM
this thread is fucking stupidwe're not getting stevenswe're not getting millerI'd be surprised if we even get Shaka Smart.
3/26/2011 11:26:30 PM
so... 60% chance our next coach's first name is Shaka?
3/26/2011 11:27:10 PM
My roommate just told me he saw where Chris Mack turned down a 8 year deal to Tennessee...no idea if it's true. But if it is then are we to assume he's staying at Xavier...or maybe just avoiding Tennessee for their impending sanctions?
3/26/2011 11:40:34 PM
Tennessee isn't going to get Mack or Smart or Buzz or any other hot name because they are going to have NCAA penalties to deal with. Probably the same at Oklahoma.Jaybee will probably try and tell you different, but don't listen to him.
3/26/2011 11:45:46 PM
Tennessee gonna end up with Marshall. Watch.
3/26/2011 11:47:48 PM
good for them.
