I dunno, doesn't seem that far fetched. Basically saying they have the potential to be the sixth best program in the SEC. I'd say the same for state

^^That is completely and utterly delusional. As a resident of Charleston SC, I can tell you that there is no fucking way UNC will even be called "Carolina" in this state. The popularity of football surpasses basketball by like a million to one and the the whole fucking state is on edge when USC plays Clemson. As someone who grew up in the triangle, I can honestly say that the level of passion, enthusiasm, and out of control Walmart fandom for USC/Clemson football down here easily rivals that of UNC/Duke basketball in my hometown of Chapel Hill.

Tennessee football fans are fucking rabid, and Auburn fans aren't far behind. Vandy is kind of the Wake of the SEC, I guess UNC could surpass them in fanbase if not on-field performance. A move by UNC to the SEC would ensure them of a decade of in-conference losing seasons.

UNC bball is a national brand, but people all over the country who realize the SEC is the best college football know South Carolina has been a legit program over the last few years

why do people act like everyone in the 48 states outside of NC and SC think we're the same state and the only college in the state is the TAR HEELS

you think people in Louisiana or Florida give a shit about UNC?

Look, aside from Charleston and half of Carowinds, I think the whole state of South Carolina pretty much sucks. But yall are looking at this through the same basketball perspective thats getting torn to shreds by all the conference realignment and expansion.

Yes people in CT, NY and CA and everywhere else know and respect the UNC and Duke brands. Hell people in England and Germany do too. Nobody, and I mean nobody, gives a fuck about South Carolina.

i grew up in north carolina, aka 'basketball country'...you grew up close enough to nyc/connecticut where its kind of basketball country of its own

but i know a shitload of people from around the country who dont even watch basketball, but are diehard football fans...they dont have any idea who dexter strickland is but they know jadeveon clowney and marcus lattimore

Strickland is ordinary. You bet they knew Marshall and Zeller.

If you're talking Alabama, LSU or Florida I'm not arguing with you but South Carolina is simply not a household or top program to the point they have a national following.

I currently live in SC (unfortunately) and these people are delusional, they think they are CAROLINA and USC, when everywhere else on EARTH considers unc-ch CAROLINA and Southern Cal USC. They also act like the ACC doesn't exist (even Clemson fans who think their football team makes them SEC caliber ) and that those NIT titles SCar has actually mean something.

^^ I think you overestimate college sports in general in the more urban parts of the country. It's HUGE in the south and shitty parts of the Midwest but the largest centers (NY, LA, Chicago, Philly, etc) simply watch as casual fans. If UNC plays Kentucky or Duke they'll watch; if Alabama plays UF or LSU they watch.

No one is going out of there way to watch South Carolina play Ole Miss or even Georgia..

yet more people watched Nevada/Arizona football than Indiana/Butler basketball

South Carolina / Michigan is gonna get massive ratings

And both had national ratings under 2.

** Again, I'm not arguing football v. basketball. Football is king. I know that. I don't like it, because I love some basketball, but I know it.

I'm simply saying that UNC basketball has a much larger national/worldwide brand than USC Carolina Gamecock football does.

South Carolina/Clemson had a 1.7 rating.

Quote :
"South Carolina/Clemson Tops Weekend Slate on ESPN/ESPN2: Saturday’s South Carolina/Clemson college football game drew a 1.7 overnight rating, leading the way among games on ESPN over the holiday weekend. Rounding out the top five were Oklahoma State/Oklahoma (1.6) and Georgia/Georgia Tech (1.5) on Saturday, Arizona State/Arizona on Friday night (1.3), and TCU/Texas on Thanksgiving (1.1). On the opposite end of the spectrum, Saturday’s Wisconsin/Penn State game on ESPN2 earned a 0.1 overnight — easily the lowest of the weekend on ESPN/ESPN2. (Weekend numbers from the Houston Chronicle)"

Lol yeah UNC has more chance at being great than Tennessee and Auburn. Both of which have 100,000 and 87,000 seat stadiums and multiple national titles with each having one in the last 15 years.

On what basis can someone say that UNC could be better than Tennessee? UNC has been average for all of history and they dont have the fan support anywhere near most SEC teams.

Look, I wasn't shitting on UNC's ability to sell basketball t-shirts in New York or jerseys in Jersey, but anyone that thinks that non-alumni in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Mississippi are going to suddenly jump on the Tar Heel Football bandwagon is fucking crazy. They aren't going to grow their fanbase and they aren't going to be able to recruit. They would be bottom feeders in the SEC for a long, long time. I'm not saying it will never happen, but they would have a hundred year mountain to climb.

The same holds true for NCSU. Our football program is on par with theirs.

As far as USC remaining relevant in the SEC after Spurrier: The same could be said for UNC BB remaining relevant after Roy.

Not quite because UNC basketball was relevant before Roy while USC football was not before Spurrier. Also relevant is a relative term. Does getting to the SEC championship game once when Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee are all down and getting pummeled by the West champions make you relevant?

A better comparison would be Duke without Coach K. Although like ^ said, Duke and UNC basketball are more than "relevant", they have been pretty dominate over the last coupe of decades. SC football has not experienced near the same amount of success as UNC or Duke basketball.

Even at ECU's expense, I would DIE to get State in the SEC just to stick it to the cheater institution.

I would put "This is SEC country" stickers all over the place!!!!!!!!!

But then I realize I hate them.

nobody (ie 99.9% of people) is gonna remember who was injured on the losing team if you win a national title

yes, when you can say that you have back-to-back 10-win seasons and consistently been ranked in the top 15 and top 10 the past couple of years. Oh yeah, and you beat the defending national champ SEC-West opponent Alabama on your way to the conf champ game
