Really starting to dig the idea of getting a sport touring bike, Currently considering a VFR 800, FJR 1300 and a BMW 1150/1200 RT

Any thoughs.

FWIW, I love my VFR800. There are some documented electrical issues, but nothing I've come across yet. It's pretty easy to do most regular maintenance on, and it's comfortable. That said, I don't think you can go wrong with any of those three. The other two are definitely tilted more towards touring though, especially with shaft drive. If you want a shaft drive vfr, gotta go with Shamu(VFR1200).

The R1150R/RT is a huge downgrade from the R1200R/RT. The R1200R/RT is worth the extra money, IMO. Otherwise, if you are in the R1150R/RT price range, I'd suggest looking at other bikes. There are plenty to choose from.

Ask Duke. He's ridden both. Quinn has also ridden both IIRC. hell, Quinn has ridden quite a few ST bikes...

I've ridden the VFR, Futura, R1200R, 1050 sprint st, and some other ~1100 boxer bmw in the sport touring class. If you're riding solo I think the VFR would be a good buy. If you're going two up I think its too small. I didn't feel it was much bigger than an SV650 to be honest. I would ride an SV650 across the country though so maybe my opinion is crap. The only one I regret not buying was the trumpet sprint. I dont think the build quality was the greatest and it is a little odd looking to me but the engine was worth the 5 grand asking price. Best motor I've ever ridden hands down, ehe.

I'm going cross country next summer with my wife and need a larger bike. I'm thinking a sprint would be the smallest I would even consider. I think I'll be in yacht territory..... concours 14 , fjr , st1300. I think classifying those as "sport" is a stretch. Heck, I would consider an RT if I saw a good deal. I'm not real fond of the boxer feel and I dont think they feel any lighter than they are even if the engine is a foot from the ground. I think my choice will be the connie .

Try everything you can get the keys to. One will make sense.

I haven't ridden an 1150R or 1250R, but I've ridden the RT versions of both. There is absolutely no comparison. I found the 1150RT to be a little disappointing, even, and I'm a BMW fan. Not a bad bike by any means--just below my expectations. I think the 1200RT is awesome, though--it's light years ahead of the 1150.

No way, dude. Not unless you plan on routinely riding, like, coast to coast, or maybe if you plan on riding nearly exclusively 2-up for significant distances. It's too much bike for any sort of normal riding. I mean, it's not that it won't do it, and even do it pretty well for what it is--it's that it's a big penalty over something like an R1200RT for 95% of riding, for not much of an advantage in the great majority of that other 5%.

If what you really, really need is a full-dresser, then nothing else will really do...but something like a 1200RT would be money for a coast-to-coast ride. It's only if you want to do shit like that all the time that a 'Wing would be what you want.

So my friend Mike that quit his job and sold the house to go across the US on a motorcycle for a year (see pages page 50 and page 58 of this thread) just published a book about it the trip. Makes me realize how old this thread is - it took him over a year since he returned to write and rewire the book, in addition to the year of actual travel.

He tried to get me to go on his first trip (planned destination of Costa Rica, I believe) on my GSX-R 750. I was like "Dude, there is no way in hell I'm riding a GSX-R from Raleigh to Costa Rica and back!"

Gravel will be the least of your worries. Maybe its worse on a sport bike. It's no problem on an sv or harley (remember that thing Hiro??)

I would say yes as long as everything works mechanically and it has been maintained. Give it to someone to learn to ride, and then resell it for $500-1000 more than you bought it for if you fix it up a little in 6 months when they get bored.
