offensive tackle seems like the safe pick. or maybe trade back.

Dream scenario: trade back to late in the 1st (steelers? they need a qb), collect a 2nd and 3rd pick in the process. Cash in on Trevor Penning/Abe Lucas, 2nd best available OL, and then spot fill. Ideally a qb (depends when the run on them happens but there could easily be most of them left by the 3rd imo). I don't really have a super firm decision on who I'd like best at QB. A lot of people like Malik Willis and I don't hate him but the games I saw weren't very great looking to me. Pickett I wouldn't hate but of the QBs I think he's least likely to make it deep into the 3rd -- some team with a relatively short term good qb will want him as a backup, the Broncos seem like a logical choice, or the Falcons).

Willis has the best chance of being a pro bowl-caliber QB, but he's also gonna need time and might be a huge bust. The rest of the QB class is a bunch of guys who might be backups at best. But there will be 2-3 first round QBs because a late first round QB gets an extra year of team control. I don't think anyone is gonna trade up with the Panthers for a QB. Also don't think the Panthers should trade back. Getting a top quality OT has to be the move here and while the OL class is deep, there are 3 top tier tackle prospects and the Panthers would be foolish to not take one. Also think if they traded back with the Steelers it would require more than that. That's a big drop and they'd probably need to include some future compensation as well to move up to #6.

Assuming the panthers were gonna go OT all along, the board couldn’t have fallen any better
4/28/2022 8:44:28 PM
I'm so sorry Ickey
4/28/2022 8:50:17 PM
Does this hurt the narrative that the Panthers refuse to sign or draft State players and that they love UNC and hate State?
4/28/2022 8:55:31 PM
I mean he is the first player from state they've ever drafted.
4/28/2022 9:19:15 PM
there’s absolutely nothing to shit on with this pickstill kind of in shock it happened
4/28/2022 9:28:32 PM
Panthers have had 212 draft picks in franchise history, including the first round tonight. 4 of those 212 picks were used on UNC players. These are stupid narratives.]
4/28/2022 9:31:18 PM
So what you're saying is they've drafted 4x as many UNC players
4/28/2022 10:26:33 PM
apparently 5 UNC players have either played 32 or started 16 games for us. 2 State players have done the same.
4/28/2022 10:52:15 PM
lol, they don't even have a single pick tomorrow
4/28/2022 11:52:14 PM
^ lol also ^^^ lol

I would have been ok with a trade back to later in 1st Rd, but the board broke to where you wanted. A dominant Left Tackle that we haven't had since Jordan Gross. This isn't the year for QB's, this the 1997 class of backup QB's. Sucks no picks today (yet never know a trade could happen).

or next year's 3rd for Matt Corralbut i do like how Howell went from a top-5 or top-10 pick a year ago, to a 3rd day selection this year
4/30/2022 1:39:32 AM
thats a much better move tbhid start him from day 1, either you find out hes worth a shit or he clausens you into a pick who is
4/30/2022 2:05:34 AM
Happy we got a QB that isn’t Sam Howell. Didn’t give up a ton to move up and take Corral, it’s hard not to like the pick. Maybe he’ll suck. But as a 3rd rounder it’s worth a shot.
4/30/2022 5:45:27 AM
I think what happened to Howell is similar to what happened to Ryan Finley, despite being completely different kinds of QB. They put up great numbers because of a wealth of NFL talent around them, which led to massive amounts of hype by journalists/people who write mock drafts for clicks. But NFL guys watch tape and see serious issues with their game (in Howell's case it's his sloooow release, lack of any touch on throws and penchant for taking sacks.)
4/30/2022 2:15:02 PM
Finley was drafted higher than Howell
4/30/2022 2:38:21 PM
Yeah I think Howell will last longer in the NFL though. Finley couldn't even get on a practice squad after 2 years.
4/30/2022 3:07:38 PM
Yeah different styles for sure. I’m not an expert to know about his release times and stuff. But Howell is a strong body with a strong arm. He’s 6’1”, so not a huge guy. But was always a load to tackle and he’s got some mobility. Howell seems to have some skills that would lend themselves to a longer career than Finley

Walter Scoop: Jimmy G to the Panthers
6/17/2022 8:26:09 AM
I'd rather have Baker than Jimmy G. But at some point you gotta recognize that you've got too much money sunken into bad QBs to go out and spend more, and both of them are gonna have big contracts. I'd be pretty shocked if we added another QB at this point in time
6/17/2022 2:28:40 PM
With Baker, it seems like the Browns would eat a good chunk of his salary. At least that was the rumor when it seemed like Watson might actually play a good amount this season.
6/17/2022 3:15:16 PM
i can't imagine a world in which the panthers make a move for either Mayfield or Garoppolo and don't also move Darnold.
6/17/2022 4:35:38 PM
the Browns are fucked and have zero leverage when it comes to their QB situation pretty confident that Watson won’t play for them this season
6/17/2022 4:58:53 PM
Just read a report the Browns were willing to cover up to half of Bakers salary. That'd still leave us on the hook for 9.4 guaranteed -- half what we're paying Darnold, but it doesn't matter cause no one will take him or his salary.
6/18/2022 10:34:43 AM
I don't see why it matters, we have like $30M in space right? We're not gonna use it on anybody else and Darnold will be gone after the season, just spend it on Baker
