You have to realize there is much that people do not understand about the internet.

Ignorant people out there hear "a youtube user was reported for making a comment" and just assume that the FBI can just track that username back to a real name, address, phone number, etc.

People don't realize it just doesn't work like that.

If they get so many tip offs and they don't have the resources to properly evaluate, or they don't have a good metric to know who's a real threat or not, this sort of indicates this isn't the most practical link to focus on doesn't it?

It would probably be illegal for the gov. to keep a database of peoples' mental health medical treatments for the purposes of banning them from gun ownership wouldn't it? There's no viable way to stop mentally ill people from buying a gun. Is it somehow less worse to violate people's right to privacy?

The free market solution is for gun shops to require credit checks, and for credit institutions to use their broad data acquisition powers to glean who's mentally ill and then deny them the credit to purchase a weapon.
