So let me get this straight. If my employer takes a political position that I disagree with, it's ok for me to just straight up stop working in protest, and expect to keep my job?
12/14/2018 3:15:55 PM
It's an action (returning the statue), not a political position. And what if a large portion of you co-workers protested with you? Would your employer fire and replace them all at the same time? Might hurt their bottom line.
12/14/2018 3:37:14 PM
^^Do you think the statue should go back up?
12/14/2018 5:28:30 PM
UNC should tear down every building erected before they allowed black students in 1951 [Edited on December 15, 2018 at 6:43 AM. Reason : e]
12/15/2018 6:35:18 AM
If a building was erected specifically to discriminate against a group of people and abunch of skinny undergrads can demolish it then sure.
12/15/2018 7:15:25 AM
beats and rjrumfel are probably against renaming buildings too

rjrumfel and aaronburro would be cheering for Rosa Parks' arrest back in the day[Edited on December 15, 2018 at 1:24 PM. Reason : .]
12/15/2018 1:24:34 PM
Did Rosa Parks refuse to do her job in protest? These professors have every right to protest. They just don't have the right to keep their job.
12/15/2018 1:26:25 PM
If the professors had refused to work in protest of UNC’s AFAM shenanigans (they should have) you two would be cheering as hard as anybody.
12/15/2018 1:34:49 PM
^^Everyone is aware that they could lose their jobs. The fact that you’re so focused on this rather than the racist statue reveals your beliefs. There were reactionaries back in the 50s, just like you guys, who thought it was good Rosa Parks was arrested.
12/15/2018 1:48:43 PM
I really couldn't care what happens to this dumb statue at this point.Send it to the state museum of history for a display on racism for all I care.
12/15/2018 9:00:31 PM
Rosa Parks has every right to sit where she wants. She just doesnt have the right to stay out of jail for it.-rjrumfel
12/15/2018 10:41:58 PM
Organized labor is something I read about in Harry Potter.
12/15/2018 11:07:45 PM
^^^That's sort of the correct viewpoint to have, but your GOP legislators in the NC GA passed a law telling individual organizations what they can do with their statues. If not for the statue law, UNC could have take the thing down a long time ago.
12/15/2018 11:18:16 PM
we should be nullifying way more bull crap laws so i give unc props for showing people its not that hard
12/16/2018 1:02:42 PM
^^ the law isnt very old, unc could have taken the statue down a long time ago[Edited on December 16, 2018 at 2:59 PM. Reason : We wouldn't be in this situation if they had]

Aren't some students (potentially) not able to graduate and therefore losing out on jobs of their own? Maybe some of the employers who hired them in advance, pending graduation, will hire them anyway based on the extenuating circumstances. But some of the students who can't graduate will have their employment adversely affected. Which jobs are more valuable, the existing jobs of the professors or the future jobs of the students?
12/16/2018 9:49:20 PM
Do you really think an employer would withdraw a job offer because of this?
12/16/2018 10:32:18 PM
What about the higher percentage of students who don't already have a job lined up? I'm just wondering why the professor's jobs are the only ones that matter to you.]
12/16/2018 10:44:26 PM
Would it be OK to build a union soldier statue beside it, shooting silent sam in his traitor head? It's just history..
12/16/2018 10:45:40 PM
^^Why can’t they still apply to jobs?
12/16/2018 11:05:28 PM
Everyone here is obviously pro-noSilentSam, so how would you feel if you had a pro-silent sam professor withhold your grades in protest? I seriously doubt you would appreciate that professors right to protest through taking the form of withhold the fruits of your semester's worth of hard labor.
12/16/2018 11:12:46 PM
^^I'm not calling for professors to be fired, but you're ignoring the fact that not being able to receive grades and graduate could actually impact some young people's employment. I guess you're more for the old white professors than the up and coming generation.
12/16/2018 11:32:56 PM
12/16/2018 11:45:35 PM
Morals don't matter here. As a student, you paid for a service. These professors are not providing an integral part of this service, regardless of how morally superior they feel.
12/17/2018 12:04:27 AM
morals always matter. be on the side who is against celebrating racist statues. it isn’t that difficult. the protests and threats worked, so I’m not sure what you’re whining about, other than being against peaceful proteststhe BOG rejected the plan, the grades were released, and students graduated[Edited on December 17, 2018 at 12:13 AM. rjrumfel and treetwista: What if they had quit their jobs in protest instead?
12/17/2018 12:57:28 AM
Management better figure out real quick then how to get rid of the statue.I highly doubt this is more than a minor inconvenience to any student. Any 3rd party relying on a grade is going to be accommodating in this case.Protests don’t work if they aren’t disruptive— it’s the “disobedience” in civil disobedience.
12/17/2018 1:00:26 AM
People are lighting cars on fire in Europe and we’re over here bellyaching about some poor undergrads not getting their grades on time?
12/17/2018 8:05:16 AM
12/17/2018 10:14:56 AM
12/17/2018 12:12:38 PM
yeah exactly, just get rid of itdidn't answer my question earlier. if they had quit their jobs, would you have been okay with the protest?
12/17/2018 12:19:11 PM
Sure?I think you're focusing on the wrong thing here in my argument. I don't care why they're protesting. They could be protesting the fact that rjrumfel doesn't make 300k/year, and I would still say that they need to do their job because other people depend on their job.Now this is UNC, so I'm sure all of these students are happy not to get these grades because it makes them sleep better at night knowing that their doing their part to get rid of this evil piece of shaped metal. But I guarantee you there are a few students that feel a little pissed about it.
12/17/2018 12:37:01 PM
he isn’t a fan of the statue, he just thinks it’s stupid that people don’t think it should stand[Edited on December 17, 2018 at 12:38 PM. Reason : he’s firmly in the fuck your feelings camp]
12/17/2018 12:37:24 PM
he's not a racist he's just okay with racists
12/17/2018 12:42:33 PM
it’s the same schtick he uses when he uses the phrase white privilege
12/17/2018 12:46:27 PM
I'm just confused why it's okay to quit your job in protest, but not okay to refuse to do your job in protest. Both result in students not getting their diplomas, which is what you seem to be most concerned with, but the former seems like it would be even worse for students.

how very brave of her
1/15/2019 12:05:29 PM
kudos to them for doing it quickly after she gave the order and not allowing anyone to organize to make it a thing. the one guy trying to pop the skid steer tire with a knife was pretty lol.
1/15/2019 12:10:05 PM
Now, will someone have the balls to arrest her over it. I mean, there's only a law that says she can't.

Go throw a penalty flag at her.
