i'm sure he was a fine coach. he's also perfectly replaceable.

Yeah team recruit rankings are based on volume and quality, so with only 1 scholarship open, wasn't a ton we could really do about volume. If we add Harris(4* on some sites), we'll probably jump up a few slots but we'll still be lower because of volume. But we had a top 10 class last year, so it's not like the team is devoid of talent.
3/23/2017 8:56:51 AM
3/23/2017 9:37:39 AM
we had 12 scholarship players this past year...and can't you have 13? so by losing DSJ and Anya we'll have 3 total open. that doesn't count Thomas Allen...but if he stays, then we're at 2. and that's assuming no transfers.
3/23/2017 10:49:07 AM
Our team had 1 senior, so Anya was the only "guaranteed" scholarship open. Thus why we had 1 committed played. Most presumed DSJ and Yurt would be 1-and-done, but technically the scholarship is theirs until they declare and sign an agent. Now Yurt might hang around, so if we had someone commit assuming he'd be here, we would be in a numbers crunch. So if DSJ and Yurt decided to come back and go for a big SO season or something, then we'd have committed kids with no scholarship to offer them. Now that DSJ has informed Keatts he's going pro, Harris gets an offer. If we have any more defections, Keatts will have to determine if he wants to use them or hold onto the scholarships.
3/23/2017 11:07:22 AM
I think that's wrong on a couple levels 1) I think DMS is right and we didn't use all of our schollys last year 2) Gott offered way more people than TA. We didn't have only 1 commit for lack of trying 3) Harris got the offer not bc DSJ just declared but bc Keatts just got started. DSJ timeline is coincidental.

Lenard's going to do really well in this system but apparently his conditioning is pretty bad too...WTF happened with the basketball team S&C coaches? Alejo been struggling.
3/23/2017 2:23:25 PM
Yeah it's Alejo's fault BeeJay is a lazy fatass and Freeman had rods put in his legs. Seriously blaming the coach? You are a PP poster dude.
3/23/2017 2:37:45 PM
I don't know which side to take in this battle of bad ST posters, but lack of player physical development HAS been a common complaint/theme during Gotts tenure. On the other hand, I'd agree that Freeman seems like a bad example.
3/23/2017 2:45:20 PM
some players took a step forward in terms of strength & conditioning...others never did not. seems like TJW lost weight and put on muscle between his FR and SO years. Vandenberg lost some weight by his senior season, but it took him a while to get there. leads me to think that a lot of it maybe was on the players to work on S&C in their free time and on their own. so some players took advantage...others did not.[Edited on March 23, 2017 at 3:07 PM. Right. Rich Howell is a another success story. I think the desire of the critics would be totally shift a bit more from "optional" to "required" and/or make the required portions more effective. There's only so much you can do if a player just won't do it the work, but, at a minimum, the middle ground players could potentially benefit from better motivation
3/23/2017 3:06:54 PM
^yeah i couldn't remember if Howell's big transformation was while Sid was still here or once Gott arrived. but he definitely is the best success story.
3/23/2017 3:08:30 PM
it ultimately falls on the programdont recruit lazy fatasses like anya that are theoretically defensive players when you dont coach defense just like when youre a football coach dont recruit a kicker who cant kick because you want to run trick plays
3/23/2017 4:24:38 PM
it always ultimately falls on the coach and the staff. nobody's really disagreeing about that. the point was, under Gott the S&C seemed to require more individual responsibility from the players. which i think we're all agreeing is not the most ideal way to go about it...you gotta have the program and coaches in place to ensure the players are holding up their end of the bargain when it comes to extra practice and S&C.
3/23/2017 4:42:37 PM
If the anecdotes from PP about Keatts practices involving constant running/playing 5 on 5 are true, the S&C coach wouldn't matter. That being said, Anya is proof to me our S&C over the last 4 years have been ass. I can't think of a player his size since that dude from FSU in the early 2000's.
3/24/2017 11:07:22 AM
3/24/2017 11:16:52 AM
Didn't Anya cut-down two different times? Unfortuantely, I think the blame falls mostly on him for not staying in shape, he obviously wasn't trying very hard at all, only so much the coaches can do besides cutting him, which Gottfried basically did with his dwindling minutes.... I think the dude is just seriously "big-boned", and he's going to get massive after he stops playing ball.(out of curiousity, and since BeeJay is NCSU's leading all-time shot blocker, I just looked at his blocks per season. Since a freshman, he had: 46, 91, 73, and then 33 his senior season)^^I believe you're referring to "Big Jelly"[Edited on March 24, 2017 at 11:35 AM. Reason : ]

Just to play devil's advocate, what are some failure stories (besides the obvious Anya)
3/24/2017 12:17:36 PM
unless the NCAA changes rules for practice times for student athletes, S&C coaches will always have to depend on individual effort to make the difference.
3/24/2017 3:25:58 PM
3/24/2017 3:32:45 PM
but nothing is stopping someone from going home and eating shit, and then on off days eating shit, and then all in the off season eating shit and not excising and there are limits on how long you can coach students
3/24/2017 3:44:08 PM
yes - every aspect of every sport depends on the individual player being responsible for his/her own actions. not just S&C. actually doing individual work outs and practicing and shit. yeah...the players gotta do a lot on their own to get better.

https://accsports.com/acc-news/basketball/james-johnson-nc-state/Asst coach hired. Good? Bad?
3/27/2017 4:07:58 PM
He is supposedly a good recruiter, but was a terrible head coach. His familiarity with the ACC should help Keatts and whoever the third assistant will be (since Siddle seems to also have a spot.) Siddle is an exciting young coach. He's from Eden and played at Gardner-Webb, then was an assistant at Hargrave for a year under Keatts before becoming an assistant at GW under Holtmann. Also I feel old because he's younger than me.
3/27/2017 4:21:09 PM
Good, young guy that knows Keatts system and was with him at Hargrave and also has playing experience but the biggest thing is he has head coaching experience(albeit not a good record) but if anything were to happen to Keatts he would obviously be interim coach and not overwhelmed. Other big thing is he's young and knows the east coast recruiting process for Keatts system and was 3x defensive player of the year in his conference as a player.Same with our soon to be other assistant Siddle.Johnson Mic'd up:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDMHd13mKaM[Edited on March 27, 2017 at 4:28 PM. I mistyped should have said also spent time at hargrave like Keatts. Straight from the bio:
3/27/2017 4:30:47 PM
why was Siddle given the title of interim HC at UNCW after Keatts left? i mean...their season was over and they were gonna conduct a search. was it an attempt to keep the roster together? not sure i've ever really seen that done before.
3/27/2017 6:16:03 PM
Uggg.. Not horribly excited about Johnson. Siddle might be a diamond in the rough, but Johnson has never been around success.I guess if you want to look on the bright side, He started well at VT and did have some upsets. His time under Larranaga can't be a bad thing, either. But compared to Lutz when he agreed to come in, neither is quite as exciting a prospect. I'm still excited about Keats energy and confidence, though. Jimmy V was a chatty energetic guy who talked big and had extraordinary goals, and that worked out well for us. Keats seems to be similarly self-driven, which makes me eager to see what he can do. Young fiery coaches surrounding him may be better than old measured ones... we won't know til we know.

3/28/2017 12:18:32 AM
^^i get where you're coming from with your concern about Johnson. but we're not asking him to be HC...so his bad HC record at VT shouldn't matter. he's got plenty of experience as an assistant and should be fine for us.
3/28/2017 7:32:02 AM
yup, as stated before, his experience in the ACC is what should hopefully make Keatts' transition to a high major easier

Lutz is going to (if he hasn't already) reach mythical status in regards to his time here.[Edited on March 28, 2017 at 9:16 AM. Reason : he was fired from Charlotte and now coaches in the Dleague. he's a god dang coaching genius]
