I don't understand the 2 months comment. Santa Monica has had a higher minimum wage for years--at least since 2005.

"

It should piss you off more that teachers make so little, instead of just being mad that fast food workers want to earn $15/hr

besides, most fast food workers can't/don't work full time, because their employers don't want to give them any health benefits.

It seems like what we've got is a shift from strong middle class to smaller upper middle class. Now the upper middle class are living in cities and making higher wages allowing them to use apps like Uber, Home Joy and Postmates. These things allow them to have some of the trappings of the rich without the power. The middle class has shrank to inflate the salaries of the top 15%. Low wages are just how things are for the lower middle class now, can't fault them for trying to organize. If you're unskilled you are in a super bad place in the new economy.

McDonald's makes BILLIONS of dollars a year. Pretty sure they could afford to pay some of their worker's health insurance costs if they actually wanted to.

Costco pays their workers around $18/hr and provide them with health care benefits. Most of their stores are also in California, a state that people constantly complain is one of the worst/most expensive states to run a business. Can we just admit that most corporations don't give a flying fuck about their workers in this country, or should we just keep on pretending they do?

According to their financials it does.

Franchise sales account for $70 billion it looks like on top of the revenue listed for the global company. I can't find the operating income for the franchises, but I bet they have an epically healthy margin.

Also it's not like Santa Monica is the only locality that increased minimum wage. It's just burro being burro.

You mean on a per-store level (aka calling people stupid), or are you saying they don't have billions in income yearly as a corporation (calling yourself stupid)?

Most don't, and it's clearly not their goal to do so. It's all about the profits mane.

Yeah most of the McD's franchise owners I know are fucking rich. Like Honey-Boo-Boo rich...obviously not Goodnight rich.

Imagine if the government told you you had to work 40 hours a week with a low pay cap, had to wear a uniform, discouraged unionizing, and only paid for the services they decided you needed?

Imagine if corporations used their profit margins to lobby in washington?

A more practical solution to all this nonsense would be to require/incent companies to maximize employee hours (40 per week or something) before hiring additional labor to fill needed man-hour requirements, unless an employee is unable/unwilling to meet the man-hours required.

Speaking of lobbies, I wonder how much money the alcohol, tobacco and lottery lobbies are throwing at raising the minimum wage. They're the industries that will benefit the most from a min. wage increase.

I don't disagree, and I've worked several low paying jobs in high school/college, in the service industry. Also at grocery stores, where to get more than 20 hours was a oddity. And we're talking about people who wanted to work more than 20 hours a week.

Of course, I didn't really like making minimum wage, so I worked hard, showed initiative and got raises. But I must not be the norm here. I started out making 4.80, ended up making 12 before leaving to go to a career job.

I worked grocery for most of the semesters I was in school as well and I made like $10.50 when I left I think which was the highest you could make without being full time. $200 for 20 hours of unskilled, zero stress, work with basically no accountability is not that bad

I would say most people in management look to maximize their labor force for availability, skill, cost, rest, and other factors. It's not like they're just going to hire 2 people to work around the clock and not hire more people. That only happens when the robot workforce takes over. Of course, this isn't practical across all job platforms, but most restaurant labor falls under this labor scheduling system.

Payed my way through college waiting tables. There were times when restaurant #1 wasn't giving me enough hours so I picked up a second waiting gig. I have zero sympathy for people who bitch about pay but don't even work a 40 hour week.

Quote :

Not always. The article I quoted above talked about a woman who worked 15-20 work weeks at McDonalds and they wouldn't give her more hours. If she got a full 40 hours she'd double her income. All without mandating we raise the minimum for everyone.

Quote :
"that would increase their labor costs significantly, who do you think is doing that?"

Obviously no one willingly at this point. That's why were talking about legislating the problem away, right? One solution on the table is mandating a minimum wage increase. I'm just suggesting an alternative solution.

afripino and Sayer,

you don't seem to understand that if the employer increased their schedule to 40 hours, they would have to pay the employee benefits and that's expensive. part time employers keep hours limited on purpose, even if someone is willing to work more hours. no one wants to pay benefits when they can just hire a bunch of people to work 15-20 hours. you guys have been misinformed or maybe never had the pleasure of working a shitty food service or retail job.

Raising the min wage would unquestionably be good for our economy. Our economy is overwhelmingly consumer driven, and this would significantly increase the amount of money circulating in the system. More people buying more iPhones, playstation, going out to eat, watching movies, actually paying their loans off, literally will help out everyone, even the wealthy.

It would likely start to tick the inequality gap down some too.

If you hate a prosperous America, the you should oppose it, but the rest of us want to make more $$$.

But If you raised minimum wage cost of living would go up and my husband with his middle class job wouldn't be getting a raise. So we would have to spend more but still be getting the same amount of money. Not cool.

Middle class commodity products that are already produced from an near infinite manufacturing capacity likely won't see shit for price increases.

Yeah, but then you're arguing the wage increase isn't what caused it.

From what I can tell this is unpopular with credit applicants in Middle America because it's too close to home when you think you're "worth" $24/hr and these damned lower beings now want $15/hr. It's an affront to their identity of being better than the lower income on the spectrum when in reality we don't need either group anymore for the economy to function.

The top 20% are the ones spending the money and paying the taxes.

raise minimum wage

companies suddenly able to raise prices "because they can"

not because "they must"

raising minimum wage has made the market collapse

they are pricing items like they are a monopoly

you were probably always the iron when you played monopoly

the iron is the bitch figure, cool bros picked the battleship
