We should have brought Mike Bell back after he averaged 19 and 9 in the Atlantic Sun.

Reminds me of what happened when Herb left and a bunch of shit started happening like Ced going pro, incoming freshmen backing off their commitments (except Horner), etc. I can't remember the full details, but it was a lot of turnover.

"Most of it is expected. Seniors Scott Wood and Richard Howell are out of eligibility, while Lorenzo Brown informed the school he'll enter the NBA Draft. C.J. Leslie is also expected to go pro, so don't read into those vague tweets.

That leaves T.J. Warren, Rodney Purvis and Tyler Lewis as NC State's nucleus of experience. They'll be joined by freshman point guard Anthony Barber, center BeeJay Anya, forward Kyle Washington and LSU transfer Ralston Turner. Expectations next season will be properly adjusted with such a green group, but that's the nature of modern college basketball.

However, Joe Giglio of the News & Observer has dropped enough hints in print to fuel speculation some or all of the trio might not be back next season.

Warren's father told the N&O, "If he's a first-round pick, I think it would be a good decision." Meanwhile, Purvis and Lewis have been the subject of transfer speculation."

ugh

I haven't heard anything about Lewis but I've heard people who have direct contact with the team say that Purvis and more importantly, his mother have been upset with his role on the team. UConn is a team he's "supposedly" considering.

He also retweeted someone on Twitter that said:

"If I'm TJ Warren and Rodney Purvis, do I want to go pro? Your nucleus of Wood, Howell, CJ, and Zo Brown is gone."

That tweet is still on his wall.

his role next year is a starter. hard to be upset with that. if he transfers, his role is being a bum for a year.

agreed. It would be stupid for him to leave. However, these kids don't always make the best decisions and they have 10 different people in their ear plus the internet driving them to make stupid decisions. So who knows.

I think the bigger issue is Lewis. If Gottfried did some dumb shit like promise Barber he would start after Brown left, then that could very well lead to Lewis leaving.

High Point was recently named the most spoiled campus in America, they have great food courts, an ice cream truck, and free snacks. I'm hearing rumours of a chocolate fountain in the dining hall, so I think Anya to HPU is a virtual lock at this point

Why are you counting Desmond Lee? Last time I checked, he was leaning towards Baylor. Has there been an update?

At his NBA draft declaration presser, Zo was asked by a reporter if long-time teammates and friends Wood and Howell leaving the team contributed to his decision to make the jump:

Quote :
"I kinda knew it was just time. If I were to stay I would still have guys like Rodney and TJ and those guys to help me out, but I just kinda figured it was my time to leave and step up to something new."

That's has a million times more weight than some BS twitter speculation on TJ and Rodney leaving.

For all the hype you get bringing in these top recruiting classes, this is the headache. They want to play and succeed. If they don't do either, they transfer. If they do, they leave early.

Honestly, wouldn't it be better to target 3-4 top 50-150 recruits and ignore these top 50 divas. The benefit of having seniors with talent is unmeasurable. Look at the contributions of Howell and Wood this year over, say, Leslie. Look at these mid-major schools who play well because they have consistency. If you can bring in a top 3 class every year like Kentucky, going after these guys can make sense. For us, I'm not sure it does.

Speaking in general. Harrow and Wilkens both left early because they were expecting more. Hickson left. We've been sweating Leslie every year. Now we're worried about Warren and Purvis.

I know Miami sucked tonight, but look how effective they were this year with a talented, athletic, experienced team and no huge recruits.

^^Harrow got playing time, I think he was just mentally weak and got sad when Lowe left...he's not exactly tearing it up at Kentucky

I don't know if Wilkens bought into the team concept, maybe he didn't think he should be playing 2nd fiddle to Grundy, or maybe he just didn't like Herb's system

Hickson left, but he led us in points, rebounds and blocks and was our best player...for whatever reason, Lowe, Hickson, Costner, McCauley, whatever, we didn't have chemistry that year, but I'd love to get a player of Hickson's talent in every recruiting class

As far as Leslie, and Brown even though you didn't mention him, they are both talented players, and we got (at least) 3 years from each of them. You can't often expect more than that. UNC won both their two most recent titles with a team of mostly juniors starting.

If Warren leaves, I wouldn't blame him. He was a great player for us this year. I don't think his talent / possibility of leaving is the problem, I think its not having enough Warren-caliber players. And I don't know how credible any of the Purvis transferring rumors are. He started for 20 games as a true freshman, got plenty of minutes, and his minutes only declined when his level of play declined. And with Brown going pro, Purvis is only going to get more minutes next year. If he does decide to transfer, not to be an armchair quarterback, but we don't want someone here who isn't content with having his minutes reduced when he doesn't perform.

And Miami is one of the oldest teams in the country. I realize a team full of 4th and 5th year seniors has the experience to have a great year, but if you want that, you'll have to be content with being average at best for 3 years, 1 potentially great year, and another 3 years of being average at best.

I welcome all the elite talent we can get. But yeah, hopefully if they leave after one year, its to go pro because they're great, not to transfer because they're unhappy.

Bottomline is I still think we're on the rise as a program. If Gott leaves and players transfer that will obviously change, but I'm not gonna be worried until those things actually happen.

What would be ideal is to get at least one contributing 4 yr player in each class -- guys who are selfless, accepting of their roles and trying to have a great college experience instead of auditioning for the pros. If you have these guys as a base and then you throw in a few blue chip talents, that's when you have a great team.

I always thought of Lewis as one of those guys. I'd be shocked if he left unless he gets the impression he's never going to get a shot with Gott.

If only Purvis could grasp the concept of team basketball instead of trying to make a hoop mixtape highlight every time he touches the ball by driving and throwing up off balanced shots...
