yay for lowering student expectations!
10/2/2014 6:46:51 PM
I heard they are making some rule where the teacher has to take your homework late no matter how late you turn it in.
10/2/2014 6:54:24 PM
that is true.
10/2/2014 6:56:21 PM

FYI: http://kenanfellows.org/2015-16-fellowship-projects/Kenan Fellowship is seeking applicants. $5000 and 80 hours of CEUs ain't bad; it's primarily STEM focused, but there are some that are open to all
11/12/2014 3:24:36 PM
how exactly does it work? do you have to find a project already being done that you are interested in, or do you get to come up with your own project?
11/12/2014 3:59:03 PM
I think that those are the projects, and you're assigned/apply to the one that best suits your background/interests. I've applied in the past but didn't get it

OH WE BACK
8/19/2015 11:18:46 AM
how have you fellow teachers dealt with students who are in jail, yet still on your rolls (and count towards your statistics?)
8/31/2015 5:59:09 PM
I had three of my basketball starters put in jail in the middle of the season for in school events. This was viewed as a lack of discipline on my end.
8/31/2015 10:36:20 PM
Treat it like a suspension: stay in touch with parents and counselor, compile work, and try to catch them up when they return.
9/1/2015 7:18:01 AM
well short term yes. i guess i should have said prison.
9/1/2015 5:36:35 PM
Oh, make a fuss. I know at our school we had to do some evaluation that established which kids were on our roles, how long they were in our classrooms, etc.. For example, students in my ICR classes technically were in my room 50% of the time.

Great thread

parent teacher conferences about to tear me a new one

"your kid is shit"... "next!"
2/26/2016 1:07:01 AM
Haha. Yes.
2/26/2016 8:29:05 AM
Things are going well. New preps with older kids than usual. Some silliness is going with grading, registration, and general SOP; but all in all, things are normal.
2/26/2016 10:48:54 AM
Quick Q: Are y'all a part of NCAE (or your state equivalent if you're elsewhere)? Why or why not?
3/10/2016 10:56:49 AM
no. lack of money for dues.
3/10/2016 5:00:25 PM
I've been paying them, but I'm thinking that money could do more for me elsewhere. I want to support them, but as they're mainly a lobbying organization, I don't see the $500 to be worth it.
3/11/2016 9:13:46 AM
i got canned for not doing enough to combat grade inflation
3/11/2016 5:51:40 PM
How?
3/12/2016 9:55:07 AM
I'm looking around for what to work on next -- besides improving achievement and revamping units, and I'm sort of at a loss for things to work toward. I have my MEd. I am an NBCT. Anyone else looking for the next project to work on?
3/18/2016 2:10:23 PM
Dr. Byrn Stuff?
3/18/2016 2:30:52 PM
Thought about it, but I want to stay in the classroom, so it seems sort of a needless expense to get the doctorate and not move into a county position/teacher educator/research position.Like I guess I could try to do publish a study or something, but I have literally no interest in research or research style writing[Edited on March 18, 2016 at 3:02 PM. Reason : .]

are you looking to add to the student's curriculum? adding to a current course? building a new course?also maybe you could get students to be interested in fields of study by doing hands on stuff? I LOVED all hands on stuffwhat were your ideas?
3/18/2016 3:05:34 PM
Mostly just a vague ambition. Kinda looking around for the next thing to tackle? I love teaching; I love my kids, but I'm always looking for other projects to work on/towards in addition to my current responsibilities.
3/18/2016 3:09:30 PM
Get them to not waste time on social media.#EndlessPursuit
3/18/2016 3:13:47 PM
teach them to garden, start a garden initiative thing at your school and if it gets big enough the vegetables etc can be used in school lunches and/or donated to families in need in the communityI personally don't think that nutrition and outdoor time is not taken seriously enough in education. But also reach out to old friends or people you know in different fields, maybe they can come in and lead an experiment?! or use the students like a brainstorming session for their next project etc??!? I know that I volunteer all the time to bring bugs into schools and I also have a very small charity thing that donates leftover science supplies to schools, and I know I don't advertise well, so maybe there is a group that would be happy to come in and teach your students about anything. I know at the before and afterschool program, we had monthly visits with these master gardeners..... I was surprised at how much the kids loved it (not all of them of course) but the little ADD monsters that I could never reign in freaking loved it and I was so damn happy to find ANYTHING that would keep them focused
