I'm thinking this has a decent chance of being overturned in the court system where personal politics are not so important. But it will take a few years.
4/19/2012 6:40:52 PM
^ 3 are you registered to vote in Wake? Just owning property isn't enough.

Marriage is God's recognition of a union between man and woman PERIOD However, I am in support of a legal means to join people of the same sex so they can have the same rights as married people; just call it something else.
4/19/2012 7:17:28 PM
This law makes that illegal.
4/19/2012 7:18:00 PM
I don't think that marriage is a construct that comes from God, GRITS_Z71It's some shit that humans made up

4/19/2012 7:32:12 PM
4/19/2012 7:51:59 PM
^Exactly. As has been stated previously the state should just legally bind two people in a contract. Civil unions for all couples. The religious ceremony should have no bearing on this contract.
4/19/2012 8:24:59 PM
But the point is why should the word 'marriage' be changed to make the religious happy? Marriage is an established legal term, why not just let everyone use that term?
4/19/2012 8:27:55 PM
4/19/2012 8:36:14 PM
^^I'm fine with that as well. I don't particularly care what its called.
4/19/2012 8:42:50 PM
Oh ok, apologies, I assumed you were making the argument I see a lot where some people claim that Christianity and god own the term, which is absurd.[Edited on April 19, 2012 at 8:53 PM. Reason : Me no type well]

My neighbor put up a pro-Amendment 1 sign, 4 days after I put up my anti-Amendment 1 sign...http://imgur.com/VoeaaI feel as though this speaks to the collective intelligence of the religious right in this state.[Edited on April 23, 2012 at 12:21 AM. Reason : :]

where do you get a sign?
4/23/2012 12:53:06 AM
Depends on what sign you want. If you want an Against sign, I'm almost positive you can get one at the LGBT center downtown. If you want a For sign, find your nearest bigot store.[Edited on April 23, 2012 at 1:08 AM. Reason : ]

^^ I work downtown and they have had petition-signature people out there for like 3 weeks. Every time I ask one of them where I can get a sign, they don't know. It's really pissing me off.

Came here to post ^So I think I may take May 8th off to go hang out at some polls and chat with folks that are undecided about this thing.
4/23/2012 9:56:04 AM
there's a house on south st in raleigh with a yard sign saying to vote yes on amendment one, and a huge "don't tread on me" flag on the porchin other words, "tread on everyone else"
4/23/2012 2:06:35 PM
can't wait till after may 8th so people can stop talking about this bullshit.
4/23/2012 2:37:53 PM
It'll only get worse once it passes, the movement to get this crap out of our constitution will be even more annoying.
4/23/2012 2:45:43 PM
well make an effort to keep it from passingif only to avoid the annoying people that will surface if it does pass
4/23/2012 2:47:48 PM
I'm doing about as much as my time and wallet will allow, at the very least I've informed a lot of people that otherwise wouldn't have even known when to vote or what the deal was. I hope it fails miserably, but I expect it to pass by a wide margin and for NC to eventually be one of the last states to allow homosexual couples equal rights.
4/23/2012 2:52:49 PM
4/23/2012 2:54:28 PM
not just homosexual couples, but allowing other non-married couples to retain their rights.
4/23/2012 2:57:38 PM
This amendment is really bringing out the political and religous hypocrites:The so-called conservative republicans and idependents want to amend the constitutation to allow government to dictate how people live their lives, and prevent something that doesn't harm anyone. The so-called christians judging other people for how they live their life, even if it doesn't affect them. And yeah, it's showing their bigotry, and in some cases, flat-out hate.I walked around the rally outside the legislature last week. Bunch of crusty, close-minded hypocritical bigots. And the really sad thing is they had kids out there who don't even understand what was going on holding up signs and wearing t-shirts.
4/23/2012 3:02:55 PM
because page 6 needs one, too.
4/23/2012 3:08:59 PM
It seems to me that this legislation is just a ruse to deprive people of benefits. Not to mention this:
4/23/2012 3:13:12 PM
this had to potential to make NC look like a forward thinking southern state and would have been a good look for us nationallynow we're gonna look like a typical backwards southern state
4/23/2012 3:13:37 PM
we teased the country in 2008 by voting for the black guy....but we sure won't let them gays have a good life
4/23/2012 3:14:49 PM
^^^well, that's the first time I've seen an evangelical type look at this with logic. *fist bump*[Edited on April 23, 2012 at 3:16 PM. Reason : .]

Personally I don't see why consenting adults shouldn't be allowed to marry their cousin or have multiple spouses. I wouldn't do it myself but if everyone is consenting who cares? Minors are a different story as they can't give legal consent.
4/23/2012 3:45:08 PM
If consenting adults want to marry their kin, i say let them. I really wouldn't have a problem if a consenting adult wanted to marry someone they knew was already married to someone else. Minors is different. They're not consenting adults.

There have been studies that show that the offspring of fornicating cousins isn't any more likely to have birth defects than the offspring of women over 40 years old. So unless you think there should be an amendment that prohibits women over 40 from getting married or giving birth...[Edited on April 23, 2012 at 4:12 PM. Reason : ]

I just don't get it. Don't they realize atheist bisexuals are already getting married and straight people are cohabitating all over the place?Echoing most everyone else, I've yet to hear anyone explain to me how this amendment "protects" marriage (from what?) that doesn't boil down to "because the Bible".
4/23/2012 4:38:55 PM
Again:if you're a "conservative" and you vote for this, your a hypocrite endorsing big government.if you're a "christian", i'm pretty sure jesus doesn't approve of your judgemental bigotry.[Edited on April 23, 2012 at 4:52 PM. Reason : ]
