Then you must not have a religion, because as long as there has been religion there has been killing done in its name.

I'm thinking this has a decent chance of being overturned in the court system where personal politics are not so important. But it will take a few years.

"Absentee Ballots

How can I vote with an Absentee Ballot?
You can vote through the mail by using an Absentee Ballot. The process has several steps:

Request: You or a near relative must write your county Board of Elections and request an Absentee Ballot (be sure the request is signed). This request can be made as early as 50 days before the election, but it must be received at least 7 days before Election Day, by 5 PM.

Receive Ballot: The Board will send these items to the mailing address you provide (the items can not be picked up in person):

An Absentee Ballot,

A return envelope with a certificate statement on it, and

An instruction sheet.

To be counted, the Ballot must be delivered to the local Board by 5 PM of the day before Election Day, or it must be postmarked at least on Election Day and arrive in the mail by 5 PM three days later. The Ballot can be handed delivered only by the voter or the voter’s near relative."

Marriage is God's recognition of a union between man and woman PERIOD However, I am in support of a legal means to join people of the same sex so they can have the same rights as married people; just call it something else.

Why should the law be written to appease a religion? Christianity, or any other religion for that matter, doesn't own the word marriage. Also, as a married atheist I laugh at your idea that legal marriage involves any god at all.

^Exactly. As has been stated previously the state should just legally bind two people in a contract. Civil unions for all couples. The religious ceremony should have no bearing on this contract.

But the point is why should the word 'marriage' be changed to make the religious happy? Marriage is an established legal term, why not just let everyone use that term?

Oh ok, apologies, I assumed you were making the argument I see a lot where some people claim that Christianity and god own the term, which is absurd.

Separate but equal, LOL.

Also, "civil unions" would be made illegal my Amendment 1.

You have clearly stated that thing you want would be prevented by Amendment 1, yet you are still a supporter of Amendment 1?

You realize that just because someone told you Amendment 1 was the "Christian" thing to do, that you shouldn't do it if it's against your own actual beliefs? You are allowed to think for yourself? Unless you're Catholic, you're allowed to interpret religion your own way.

Depends on what sign you want. If you want an Against sign, I'm almost positive you can get one at the LGBT center downtown. If you want a For sign, find your nearest bigot store.

^^ I work downtown and they have had petition-signature people out there for like 3 weeks.

Every time I ask one of them where I can get a sign, they don't know.

It's really pissing me off.

I'm doing about as much as my time and wallet will allow, at the very least I've informed a lot of people that otherwise wouldn't have even known when to vote or what the deal was. I hope it fails miserably, but I expect it to pass by a wide margin and for NC to eventually be one of the last states to allow homosexual couples equal rights.

This amendment is really bringing out the political and religous hypocrites:

The so-called conservative republicans and idependents want to amend the constitutation to allow government to dictate how people live their lives, and prevent something that doesn't harm anyone.

The so-called christians judging other people for how they live their life, even if it doesn't affect them. And yeah, it's showing their bigotry, and in some cases, flat-out hate.

I walked around the rally outside the legislature last week. Bunch of crusty, close-minded hypocritical bigots. And the really sad thing is they had kids out there who don't even understand what was going on holding up signs and wearing t-shirts.

It seems to me that this legislation is just a ruse to deprive people of benefits.

Not to mention this:

Quote :
"Also, as a married atheist I laugh at your idea that legal marriage involves any god at all."

If atheists and other non-Christian groups can get married legally, then why are we attempting to impose strict religious observances for gay marriage, etc. While I certainly don't think homosexuality is moral (as per scripture), I see no difference in atheists being married and gays being married.

Personally I don't see why consenting adults shouldn't be allowed to marry their cousin or have multiple spouses. I wouldn't do it myself but if everyone is consenting who cares? Minors are a different story as they can't give legal consent.

If consenting adults want to marry their kin, i say let them. I really wouldn't have a problem if a consenting adult wanted to marry someone they knew was already married to someone else. Minors is different. They're not consenting adults.

completely different discussions, unless your aim here is to turn debate for/against those cases into an argument for/against amendment 1, in which case you ought to learn how to debate without using logical fallacies.

I'm talking about the "sanctity of marriage" that is an attempt to justify this amendment. I'm not weighing in on the moral nature of the action. If you want to talk about banning groups from getting married in a country you are talking about a legal issue, not a religious one. You can't force people to have faith or follow scripture, if someone sets their mind to something they are going to do it whether it is legal or not.

There have been studies that show that the offspring of fornicating cousins isn't any more likely to have birth defects than the offspring of women over 40 years old. So unless you think there should be an amendment that prohibits women over 40 from getting married or giving birth...

I just don't get it. Don't they realize atheist bisexuals are already getting married and straight people are cohabitating all over the place?

Echoing most everyone else, I've yet to hear anyone explain to me how this amendment "protects" marriage (from what?) that doesn't boil down to "because the Bible".

Again:

if you're a "conservative" and you vote for this, your a hypocrite endorsing big government.

if you're a "christian", i'm pretty sure jesus doesn't approve of your judgemental bigotry.
