One's opinion on whether that would be a good season is directly related to his/her expectations for the team this coming year.

I'm expecting continued improvement and thus at least another Sweet 16 appearance. Anything less than that would be disappointing. While it would be nice to cruise into the post-season flying high on a 4-loss regular season, the only thing that really matters to me is how we do in the tournament when we get there. I think Giants' fans would agree.

Fuck you Slave, face has conclusively proven that small-sample per-minute stats and splits can be extrapolated accurately over the course of a season.

He's got algorithms and shit.

11. N.C. STATE. If C.J. Leslie returns — and that seems like a big “if” — the Wolfpack will jump up to the 6-8 range. Even without him, they should be able to build off of a surprise run to the Sweet 16 behind point guard Lorenzo Brown and power forward Richard Howell. The addition of five-star shooting guard Rodney Purvis gives State some serious scoring punch on the perimeter alongside senior marksman Scott Wood.

Has UNC ranked ahead of us at 8.

don't really think that "if" is that big. from what i here it's 60-40 he's coming back. top 20 pick = gone.

I don't think its necessarily sweet 16 or bust. If we actually contend for the ACC and end up with a 4 or 5 seed but lose in the round of 32 then I think its still a good season. However, I would be disappointed if we only show marginal improvement, get an 8-9 seed and then not make the sweet 16.

yea, ncaat can be such a crap shoot.

if we're competing for the acc-regular season crown, then i'd be more than happy regardless of what happens in the tourneys.

if CJL stays and we continue to get media hype, then i hope the coaching staff can keep the guys focused.

sweet sixteen or bust is absolutely the wrong attitude to have going into this season.

just so you're aware ahead of time.

yeah, you may be really disapointed, perpetual sweet 16 is a very lofty goal.

i remember a year ago people were saying they had no expectations. now people expect sweet 16? we got hot at the right time. Gottfried still needs to figure out how to get this team playing like that all season long.

i'd like to see us be a contender for the acc regular season. that'd be a huge step in the right direction. we got hot at the right time this year and it really showed in the ACCT and NCAAT, but it's hard to expect a sweet 16 every year.

No tourney expectations, we all know it's a crapshoot unless you're a #1 seed.

I just want to see NC State beat both Duke and UNC, and finish higher than them in the rankings. It's been 23 years since NC State finished with the best record in the ACC, and 25 years since we won the ACC tournament. Since then, Duke and UNC have had an oligopolistic hold on the conference. Fuck everything about that.

Postseason success is overrated in any sport besides NBA and Hockey. Cardinals weren't the best team last year, neither were the Giants. Kentucky obviously was, but UCONN certainly wasn't.

why?

my biggest question about next season (aside from CJL staying or going) is Gottfried's ability to mesh the new guys with the old guys, something he didn't really have to do last year except for AJ backing up Zo

I know what you're saying, but just for the record I'm absolutely not criticizing him. Not every player on a roster should be expected to be a major contributor. I'll judge his four (or five) years a success if he can contribute 7-10 minutes a night while our more athletic and talented players need a break. You can't win a lot throughout a year without guys like that.

It's a very face-ish argument but every minute he is on the floor is one less minute of Howell, Leslie or Painter (and in a perfect world Amile Jefferson) and that isn't a good thing.

Vandy would've been very helpful in games where Leslie and Howell experience foul trouble...which was most games. And like you said, we don't need 20 minutes/gm from him...just come in and give us decent minutes to spell the other guys

If we're lucky, Vandy will develop into Luke Schenscher territory. Remember how awkward that dude was his first few years? By the time he was a senior, he was halfway decent.

Schenscher was also from Australia. Same size, too.

I'm sure that it will happen. It's sad, but I really do think that winning it out loud is impossible due to ACC refs.

I'm not going to read all of that, but expecting anything out of Vandy is laughable. So far, the guy has been a 7 footer who plays like he is 6 feet tall and tweets a lot. Any good play from him is icing on the cake.

^^you're supposedly a wolfpack fan, and you watch most of the games, and you even traveled for the tourney, yet up until a few weeks ago you didn't even know williams was a senior. i don't trust your assessments.

here are the football divisions, will the basketball divisions be different?

Atlantic: Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina State, Syracuse and Wake Forest.

Coastal: Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Vandy will be good. The staff knows how to use him. He's had an entire year to learn his role and bulk up. He'll play solid minutes next season and will probably start for his last year of eligibility. He's going to look like a different player. Not saying he's gonna be all acc, but I think he'll be a better contributor than painter was for us this year.

I don't understand all the hate for Painter. Granted he is not as good as Howell and Leslie but I thought he did a pretty good job as a sub this year. I will be surprised if Vandy is ever as good as Painter.

Painter made a big stride this year, found his role, and stuck to it. Vandy will never be as good as Painter was this year, much less next year.
