First qb in nfl history to throw for 400+ in his first game

Imagine if he had otas and a full training camp

Future is bright

No Panthers fan should be too upset about that loss. Newton was amazing.

Cam made the Panthers exciting. How long has it been since we watched a game with enthusiasm and excitement for big plays and a chance to win. Cam made some average receivers look good. There have to be some FA WR that we can add to give another weapons.

Smitty looked excited and happy as hell....someone that could get the ball to him and often.

Def has to step up, the run game looked to simply shred us. Enjoyed the game, and looking fwd to seeing the progress of Cam and the Panthers.

So if the panthers have the first pick in 2012, do they draft Luck? What if Cam looks good but really the D is shitty (we locked up a shitty D)...hmmmmm

I don't think they will have the #1 pick, but I think they could get $Texas for that pick in a trade, and use those other picks to fill the problem areas

We won't have the 1st pick, indy will

And they will be scary with a peyton-trained luck

^no way in hell indy will have the #1 pick.....better chance in the panthers winning the Super Bowl than indy having the #1 unless they trade the farm for it.

If we had the #1 pick, maybe we can get something similiar to what the Saints gave up for Ricky Williams?

No way in hell indy has the #1 pick? I'm assuming manning is done for the season in which case they could easily have the #1 pick, today's texans game should be evidence of that

LOL at giving Indy NO chance at the #1 pick.

So roddy, since they have absolutely no chance at finishing last, you're saying they won't even be one of the 5 or 6 worse teams?

So supposedly Rivera called Beason's leg injury "dire" and rotoworld.com is claiming it could be career threatening. Fuuuuuuuck

Like I said, panthers have a better shot at the SB then indy at the #1 pick. Also, the panthers DL and D suck, so Cam can do well but the D just plan sucks and cannot stop anyone.

From what everyone is reporting, it's an Achilles issue with Beason.

If it's a partial tear, he's out basically the rest of the season, but should return next year no prob.

If it's a rupture, he might never be the same.

Cool stat I just saw on ESPN, Tom Brady has never thrown 422+ yards in his entire career.

I'm willing to say at this point that if you are playing fantasy football and Cam Newton is still a free agent, you had better go draft his ass quick. You know he's going to have more games like this.

I don't think Newton's performance today is really going to set the tone for how good of a QB he wil be; after all, Arizona's pass defense was pretty shitty to begin with. The real selling point is how he will do against teams that have bitchin' D's down the road. As far as the Panthers go, our defense is still in absolute shambles and Double Trouble isn't what it used to be. We have a pretty good TE and a pretty good receiver in Smith. I can definitely see the Panthers becoming more of a passing team at this point, which should mean lots of points for you fantasy gurus.

I really hope Newton is as good I hope......it feels like it's been too long since I got excited watching a Panthers game. I can only hope today's game sets the tone for what lies ahead.

I just saw the highlights of the game and had a question. On that last TD for the Cardinals the guy slows, looks back, waves a bit, then unnecessarily dives. No flag? I thought they were going to do a new rule this season where a TD would be negated and they would bring the ball back out if you did any pre-touchdown showboating.

even if their record isn't great toward the end of the season, but Cam still plays very well in the meantime, how unlikely is it that the Panthers could get flexed to a night game...would the NFL do that just so the nation could watch a high-profile player or do they only do that for high-profile (division chase/etc) games?

Here's to Cam staying healthy this season and us using our top 5 pick effectively next season! Our schedule is pretty rough save for about 3 games.

You gotta factor in who's "penciled in" as the NBC game that week, then see who we're playing to see if there's a chance. Tough to do after 1 week.

Eagles at Giants (Panthers at Detroit) Highly Unlikely
Steelers at KC (Panthers at Colts) Highly Unlikely
Indy at NE (Panthers at TB) Maybe just maybe if the Colts continue to blow
Giants at Dallas (Falcons at Panthers) Only if one or both of NYG/Dallas are terrible
Ravens at SD (Panthers at Houston) Highly Unlikely
Week 16 N/A as Sunday night game is only game that day (Christmas)
Week 17 Pointless to predict as it will only go to game with direct playoff implications (Panthers at Saints)

So slim chance in weeks 13 and 14, but probably no night games till 2012

damn I don't remember the last time Christmas was on a Sunday, but I definitely don't remember them moving all the games to the Saturday before ... I guess that's because it's college bowl season by then and the overlap of nfl/college isn't as blatant

2005 ... was that the year Smith got hurt in the season opener on Monday night vs. Green Bay?

that mightve been 04, year after SBXXXVIII

Smith got hurt in the '04 opener. '03 and '05 were playoff years.

[Edited on September 12, 2011 at 3:39 PM. Reason : Decent change we at least get flexed to a couple 4:00 games, which is just a little sexier than 1:00]

Cam had a great game, but next Sunday will be a great judge of his ability. If he can handle GB's blitzing and secondary play the way he did against AZ, I'll poop directly into my pants in celebration of having a young franchise QB.

Sucks, but I'd rather have it happen this season than two or three years from now when we may be a playoff team. We need another high draft pick or two at WR, OL, DT and/or CB before we're ready to be an annual contender.
