^^ while i think money can be made rather easily in the stock market, it is indeed a crap shoot in a lot of sectors. with the volume/frequency stocks are traded, the tech sector is a load of shit and we're heading to a .com boom 2.0. facebook "valued" at 75 billion? groupon turned down a 6 billion buy out? where the fuck are these valuations coming from? it's certainly not earning power. hedge funds don't understand tech stocks as exhibited by apple's performance over the last 3 weeks. it damn sure isn't guaranteed money. that said, i have a hard time /not/ making money but I invest in areas i have highly specialized knowledge in.

no, i've invested since high school. I just recently had enough cash to invest with any kind of volume, though. i won't say i have insider info but i certainly have access to a lot of information the general public does not when it comes to the tech sector, based on what I do. i did rebuild my aunt's retirement from 08-09 mid-housing crash. i invested in the data center tech i identified as being in position to cash in on downsizing/cost cutting in IT

And that was...?

I'm with the SEC please have a seat over there sir..

vmware, netapp, a little in citrix but then quickly out when their management decided to go to that retarded licensing model, were the real money makers. 3par several months before the bidding war. basically large scale virtualization enablers that have a product offering and management that's above the competition. citrix tech could crush the market if they could get their management together.

Does anyone play with UCO? I just heard it mentioned on CNBC apparently it's a double leveraged version of USO.
3/10/2011 2:33:19 PM
I'm really getting tired of people making current models based on the 1995 Kobe earthquake and nothing else.
3/14/2011 3:26:26 PM
Anyone buying any nuclear stocks today? I figure they will recover once media switches focus to something else.CCJ, SHAW might be good candidates.HIT is interesting, and could be a good play, but depends on how much business they'll lose given that they are physically based in Japan, and what the future holds for nuclear energy in japan.
3/14/2011 4:42:38 PM
I thought about it. USEC(USU) was down 11%. Definitely looked into Hitachi was well with as much as they fell and the fact that they are very far along in a joint venture with GE to get a new ESBWR reactor licensed[Edited on March 14, 2011 at 4:47 PM. Reason : .]

I've been thinking about some UNG off and on for a couple months now on the idea that...it just can't go lower...and if the Fed keeps driving up asset prices people will start looking at NG again as a place for energy relief. It went up 100% on the nuke plant issues.
3/14/2011 5:24:55 PM
If I didn't already have some puts open on GE I would have picked up some more.Today I just picked up some EWJ and bought back the TM shares that were called away at $85 last month for $81.55. Closed a ton of calls too.
3/14/2011 6:03:17 PM
my whole AGQ play is not panning out
3/15/2011 11:36:18 AM
Dammit. Wish I'd bought more TM on the open.
3/15/2011 2:37:23 PM
just picked up 46 shares of HIT at 49.78I started trying to buy it at 48.50, and it was moving up so fast that I couldn't catch it with a limit order in time, so put in a market order when yahoo real-time said it was 49.95, and my order was filled a few minutes later at 49.78. For once doing a market order worked out in my favor, but I don't recommend it in general, and this is one of the rare times I did it.5 minutes later, it's up over 50. Not sure how long I'll keep it. If I have enough time to research the company, and it looks good long term I'll hold for a while. Otherwise I'll cash out at 10%.
3/15/2011 3:21:25 PM
^ I just picked up some shares at 50.07 and immediately sold $50 calls on all of it for this Friday at $1.20. 2% in 4 days is good enough for me and if I keep it my bottom line is down to 48.87.

IBM shares were downgraded at Bernstein this morning to Market Perform from Outperform. Despite the downgrade, Bernstein upped its price target on IBM to $173.154.50-4.52 (-2.84%)Bah! Stupid investors.

Glad I sold all my S stock last week May look to rebuy though on the big hit.

3/23/2011 3:47:42 PM

3/23/2011 3:57:02 PM
I might have to get back on this BIDU thing. Also, whats a good place to check out currency futures? I'm curious about the euro and GBP but the only things I can find are from forex trading sites that I don't trust.]

Had some money to try to get in on this stuff. What do you guys think of EBIX?
3/25/2011 8:51:19 PM
Apparently this was cause for the drophttp://seekingalpha.com/article/260007-ebix-not-a-chinese-fraud-but-a-house-of-cards-nonetheless-part-iiiand the company responsehttp://www.thestreet.com/story/11059443/1/ebix-response-to-stock-price-drop.htmlIf you want to gamble, play this stock. If you want to invest, choose something else.

Looking for a little friendly advice. I have approx 1100 shares of PEYAX whichnis trading today at 16.25. It gets a great dividend and the dividend gets reinvested quarterly. I was not planning to sell it at all but I need the money for a down payment on a house. I plan on putting the down payment down by mid may. I would love it if anyone wanted to chime in and let me know if they think I should sell it immeaditly or try to wait a little longer. Since it is a broad mutual fund I essentially want to know if people think the market is going to rise or fall in the next 1.5 months. Thanks form your help.
3/31/2011 5:43:20 PM
I'd sell now. That's a really short time period of have that much money tied up in that fund. If you don't need all of it you could always sell half now.
3/31/2011 6:08:45 PM
Damn. EWY, the South Korea index etf, is up 12% since the Japan earthquake. I knew that people were moving into that as an earthquake recovery play, but that's got to be due for a correction. Also, whats up with HIT lately? Is all of the volatility because of the nuclear thing in Japan?]
4/5/2011 3:58:56 PM
Speaking of ETF's, what service are you guys using to trade ETF's? I want to be able to trade somewhat actively in ETF's, but in a cost effective way. Maybe a couple of trades a week. The other option for me is to buy Mutual Funds at NAV, but I don't think I would want to do any active trading in that type of format.
4/7/2011 11:19:43 AM
sold some AGQ today
4/8/2011 2:59:15 PM
I've been sitting on some shares of WU for a while. I did a covered short strangle with a put at $18 and a call at $20.Its going to pay off fine, but whenever I look at WU the voice in my head calls it "Wu-Tang Financial" instead of Western Union.
4/8/2011 4:51:48 PM
Ok looking to get in on some small time trades and penny stocks.what service is good and cheap these days? e-trade?I havent been in this for a longggggg time.anyone?
4/8/2011 11:57:35 PM
Why penny stocks?
4/9/2011 12:22:35 AM
cheap investment for me, i dont have a TON of cash to throw at larger stocks at the moment and I think i could do decent with penny'sI wouldnt miss $100 if i lost it but I stand to make quite a bit in a short time.
4/9/2011 12:29:21 AM
Why not just buy 1 $100 stock or 2 $50 stocks, etc.
4/9/2011 1:01:50 AM
I think Poker Stars is probably a good low commission site for you.
4/9/2011 9:15:03 AM
You're likely not going to find a place with cheap enough trades to make a $100 purchase worth it. I use Scottrade, which is $7 in and $7 outI think Etrade is like $20[Edited on April 9, 2011 at 11:39 AM. Reason : ]
4/9/2011 11:39:34 AM
I used TradeKing, 4.95 each way, but I wanna say penny stocks were a bit different depending on the number of shares you purchased.
