i thought it was good. better than the first. love the dialogue between Smaug and Bilbo. love the Gandalf/Radaghast/necromancer scenes. Tauriel and the one dwarf love story + the river scene were the worst parts.

I guess I'm the only one that thought the river barrel ride part was kinda cool.

Also, LOL that Kate from Lost found her way into ANOTHER love triangle.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I thought this movie was a complete train wreck.

-River scene was even worse than I expected.
-The Hobbit! Now with more Legolas than half the main characters in the book.
-Random love triangle, because Marketing said so.
-Random 30 minute fight scene between Dwarves and Smaug. He can smell an invisible Hobbit while half-asleep and find his exact location (and smell that he is with Dwarves), but I'll be damned if he can't find the same Hobbit and 12 Dwarves sneaking directly under him.
-Sneaking into River Town is a huge issue if you are Dwarves. If you are Orcs, though, you can just walk in through the front entrance and park your Worgs at the gate. Its OK, no one will see you.

And the ending was basically a giant "Fuck You". It essentially ended mid-fight and immediately went to some modern folksy song that felt completely out of place. Needed to listen to this afterwards to feel better:

Does anyone know why they made Orlando Bloom's eyes so much brighter in this one than in the LOTR trilogy? Here are two pictures for comparison:

Legolas from The Two Towers:

Legolas from The Hobbit 2:

I like how they went to the potatocam shot when they wanted to show the water rushing around.

I agree on many points already made:
Legolas - The Hobbit: Orlando Bloom needs more money
Tauriel - why?
Dwarves - there are dwarves in the movie?

I kind of expected that the movie was going to end with the giant cliffhanger (much like two towers had going into the spider lair), but was hoping that they were going to fight Smaug and have the battle end as the conclusion to the movie.

I think I'd like to see someone do a full edit at the end of the series and see how this could have been shrunk down to a 3 hour movie in place of a trilogy of 3 hour movies

Saw it today, liked it better than the first. I loved the river battle scene, but the love triangle was incredibly dumb. Also Legolas is kind of a dick.

The river battle scene was completely ridiculous, but it was so much more fun than the escape the goblin lair scene, which was basically the counterpart from the first movie.

Overall I loved it, much better than the first, which felt, in the words of Bilbo himself "thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread."

ok I saw this with friends. I was going to skip these movies as I believe they are nothing but scams
3 movies my niggas? the book was shorter

this is the only time we may be watching a midget film and get away with it. soak it in. every time I saw those dwarfs run I was dying laughing. so I pretty much laughed the entire movie except for two parts I think and the part I slept through.

I'm a not a LOtR fan so please explain to me why there are dwarfs that look like humans and other dwarfs that look like lawn gnomes? genetics?

I dont remember half this shit in the book. where the elves come from? I thought the hobbits didn't battle smug? How did Smug smell the hobbit at first then completely lose that when all 7 dwarfs showed up?

I love the gold dragon but I thought it was weird when he was getting his ass kicked by the dwarfs and falling shit he was like" welp. I'm going to kill some humans now"

I went to sleep during the barrel part so i cant comment on that.

when I woke up the movie was STILL going. I was horrified.

they just wanted to make a legolas movie. lets be real.

^^I noticed that too. The dwarves that looked like humans tended to be royalty (Thorin, Kili, Fili) so that might explain it (their ancestors banged the hot dwarf women)

entire Smaug chase scene in mountain was absurd and unnecessary.

They are getting more and more over the top just to fill time it seems. Much better ways to handle Smaug awakening.

Most all other instances of expanding from the book were fine.

Tauriel is the hottest elf in all of the movies. Makes sense that Jackson added her in because that homo george rr martin would never have put her in the original.

This movie was way too long.

i would think a scene with a character that was actually in the book would be better than scenes involving a made up elf and a band of orcs that never stalked the dwarves because the ringleader was dead long before the events of the hobbit started, but that's just me

the first bit with bilbo and smaug was excellent - the rest of the smaug stuff was absurd and eye-roll worthy at times. the added orc chase scenes were once again unnecessary/obtrusive and the whole Tauriel/Legolas/Dwarves staying behind in Lake-town/esgaroth was pointless as well. Their time in Mirkwood and their time at the mountain felt rushed which is unfortunate considering the stuff they crammed into these movies.

I still enjoyed it some from a purely entertainment value (once again, like the last one, the movie flew by considering its length) but it just feels like a glossy, video game based on The Hobbit with almost too much stuff going on. Doesn't even seem like the same Middle-Earth universe at times that PJ's LOTR is set in (which despite changes there, I have enjoyed much more than the Hobbit films so far).

I can't decide if I would have liked these movies more or less had I not been such a big fan of the books. (more because I would have nothing to compare to in that case or less because they are a cluster at times but I'm currently biased to enjoy it somewhat regardless as a book-lover)

Positives: Smaug looks great, lake town looked great, Freeman is still the perfect cast for Bilbo (and same for Ian McKellen as Gandalf)

PS: the closing song was terrible.

^Bingo

The over the top crap in these hobbit movies disconnects is from the more grounded content in the first LOTR movies.

Comes across as not being taken as seriously as the first 3.

^^^^, ^^^

You can't really compare the source material of the first 3 movies to the Hobbit movies. The tone should be lighter, because the tone of the book The Hobbit was lighter than anything in the LOTR series. I think it matches pretty well.

I could've done without the add-ins, but overall I've enjoyed them.

I agree the tone should be lighter. No doubt about that. But the whole universe feels strange at times compared to the other movies. I will still be in the theater watching this movie no doubt.

I don't know, it was ok. Way too much CGI and I could give a fuck about Tauriel. The steps with legolas were retarded as fuck. Thorin did a great job portraying his madness and bilbo was good as well. To be honest, Alfred stole the show for me

As someone who didn't read any of the books I was a little disappointed that Alfred didn't get his comeuppance. Sure he didn't deserve to die or anything but he made it out with a ton of gold.

Also I was surprised that Smaug was only in the movie for like 5 mins. I was expecting a big long drawn out battle with him.

I kept an open mind of the first two movies and was still severely disappointed, so I will not see this one. I pretty much assumed Smaug would hardly be in the 3rd due to not being in a single trailer. They could have gotten the scene in the second movie if they cut the absurd Benny Hill chase scene in Lonely Mountain. They probably didn't want to do that, though, because the general audience they are pandering to (who know nothing of the books) would have thought that was the final movie.

saw it last night. Came away disappointed and not really sure why. I mean, this was supposed to be the big final movie of all of them and for the most part, it was a bunch of people standing around a mountain arguing. Then a big fight happened, folks died, and that was it. It was cliche as hell. They hit all of the cliche sappy movie points. The CGI wasn't all that good outside of the environment. I could see something coming 15 minutes before it happened. I could keep going, but whats the use? My wife and her sister loved it, but they're easy to please when it comes to movies. I just thought there should have been MORE. And there wasn't. Maybe its the books fault, i dunno, i never read them. Just thought it seemed...not a good way to end it

Well, it's a single, relatively short book turned into 3 long movies. That's why it seems like nothing happens in each movie. It could have easily been 1 movie, or maybe 2 with some of the other story pieces they tried to add.

I will still see this movie as this was my favorite book as a kid and I've seen the first two, but overall it has been a major disappointment for me, especially upon trying to re-watch any of these movies. Maybe someone will do a fan edit to cut it down to 1 movie with the original story mostly intact.

It wasn’t very good. The final scenes with Tauriel, Legolas, and his father were cheesy as fuck. That part with Legolas on the bridge was fucking stupid. I hated every time Afrid was on the screen and it’s really weird that he never gets what’s coming to him. I guess they’re saving that for extended edition. The best part was the battle with the Ringwraiths, that was pretty badass. Otherwise Bilbo and Thorin was the only thing keeping the rest from being a total shitshow.

^^^ that's briefly covered in the silmarilion. initially saruman wanted the ring for himself and was looking for it separately from sauron, but i don't think Tolkien went into much more detail beyond just that he decided to join forces with sauron after not finding it on his own. i'm not sure if the appendices after return of the king say much else about it because I haven't read those. it's possible that they would've just been making shit up if they went into detail about why saruman switched sides, so it's kind of good that they didn't go in that direction since they took enough creative liberties with other parts of the hobbit trilogy, like making up a fucking elf

After the bar LOTR set for battle scenes, the battle of the 5 armies was underwhelming. Good potential, and a few good moments, but still underwhelming. My overall disappointment was that I felt this epic climax had more serious looking face shots than actual action.

Here's my problem with the movie. Azog's battle plan is ridiculous. Why not let the dwarves, men and elves fight it out, weakening their numbers, before descending on them?

Finally got around to watching the last film, without having to pay so I wouldn't be as disappointed.

Agree with most things said here, but would like to add a couple. Need to preface this by saying the last time I read the book was in middle school so I don't know just how accurate some scenes were.

In the Fellowship of the Ring, did Gandalf know Bilbo had a ring before the disappearing act at the birthday party? And did Gandalf already know Sauran was back? I have a hard time believing someone as wise as Gandalf would not put it together when he knew both pieces of information.

Thorin took his "best warriors" on a side quest. At what point is Kili portrayed as a warrior in these films before that point? They kept treating him as the youngest and weakest of the group.
